R.H.M.'s Gifts

Leah
I opened the envelope with shaky hands to pull out the card inside. I frowned when there was nothing written on it. I turned the card over, letting out a relieved breath when there was something written on the back of it.
*‘I don’t know what I should be sorry for, but I can’t take you being angry with me anymore. Please take these gifts as a peace offering. I hope that they are a better apology than I could ever verbally make.’*
*‘R.H.M.’*
*‘P.S. When I say I can’t take it anymore, I really mean it. I miss you.’*
I sighed softly as I brought the card up to my lips to press a kiss to it over his name. “I miss you too, R.H.M.”
I set the card to the side before pulling the smallest box toward me. I was relieved to see that it wasn’t taped shut. It was just folded together. That was way easier than having to struggle to cut the tape that companies used now. I knew. Will used to order everything online and I was stuck trying to open them. My lips turned up in a smile when I saw what was inside before I glanced down at Sugar.
“Guess it’s not just me that he’s trying to suck up to,” I told her giggling, before digging around in the box to find something small that she could have now.
I tossed her a rubber tire before setting the box on top of the fridge. It was only right that since he took the time to pick things out for her that he got to give them to her. I pulled the next smallest box to me, eagerly opening it to see what was inside. My mouth dropped open when there were close to two dozen latch hook kits inside. There were pictures ranging from animals, to landscape scenes, and scenes depicting people in several different environments. I melted even more inside when the last one I pulled out of the box had a picture of Sugar on it.
I carefully put all of the kits back into the box before taking it to the living room to place it next to the couch. The coffee table was the perfect height and length to do my latch hooks on.
I hurried back to the kitchen to open the last box, grunting when it was heavy. I climbed up on the island to kneel beside it as it was too tall for me to see inside it along with being too heavy to move. I pulled the flaps away from each other before giving a shout of happiness.
“NO WAY!”
I began to quickly remove the books inside, organizing them on the counter by author until I had six piles. I stared at the piles stunned. I ran my hands over Fiona Wright’s books, completely in awe that he remembered. I giggled as I thought about the ferris wheel scene in her book Mates’ Love Bites before my eyes were drawn to Michele Dixon’s pile, trying to fight back the urge to just pick up Unwanted and get lost in its pages for the third time. I squealed when I saw he had actually purchased BurntAsh3s’ The Lupian Chronicles series, that my heart pound with excitement as I read, and Lily W. Valley’s Bayou Beast series that had me soaring with a different feeling lower in my stomach. I picked up Shadow of Yesterday from Muhammad Musa’s pile, cradling it close to my chest. Chapter 7 was the first thing that I had read, entirely by accident of course, but it had made me read the entire book.
I was absolutely floored with how thoughtfully he had chosen everything to apologize to me with. Not that I had to accept it but he did admit to missing me, and that was progress. He wasn’t just ignoring his feelings. I set the book down before blowing Sugar a kiss. After getting her some water and food, I hurried out of the house. I sprinted down the streets to his office before stopping on the porch, panting while I doubled over clutching my side. I lifted the watch to my mouth.
“R.H.M.,” I said, still gasping for breath.
“Phoenix? Are you alright? Where are you?” He immediately asked, panic evident in his voice.
“Can you come over?”
“Yes. I’ll be right there! Stay put.”
I moved to stand in the shadows by his door, waiting for him to come out. When I heard the elevator doors open, I stuck my fist in my mouth to mute my panting. He rushed past me in his hurry to get to my house. I moved to lean against the railing, whistling loudly. He froze before spinning around, relaxing immediately when he saw me. He came back up the stairs, eyeing me.
“Phoenix? Are you alright?” He asked worriedly.
“Yeah. I think I am,” I told him, tilting my head.
“What happened?”
I walked up to him, running my hands up his chest to wrap my arms around his neck. I stood on my tiptoes to press a soft kiss to his lips.
“Apology accepted, R.H.M.,” I murmured against his lips.
“Are you sure?” He inquired hopefully.
I nodded. “Yes.”
His arms went around my waist to pull me closer to his body. “I really am sorry for whatever I did.”
“I know,” I told him.
“Will you tell me what I did wrong so I don’t make the same mistake again?”
“No. But I will tell you just don’t lie to me about anything and we’ll be okay,” I whispered.
“I won’t. I promise.”
“Good.” I leaned against his chest, breathing deeply. “You know, we never did finish dinner last night. Would you maybe want to come over for dinner? I’ll make you some lasagna.”
His chest vibrated with his laughter. “Don’t you mean you’ll warm up some of Rosemary’s lasagna for me?” He teased.
I pulled back to frown at him. “You know it’s not too late to be mad at you again.”
Happiness danced merrily in his eyes. “I’ll just have to buy you more books.”
I rolled my eyes before kissing him again. “Does that mean that you’ll let me feed you warmed up Rosemary lasagna?”
“Yes, Phoenix.”
I gripped his face in my hands as I looked into his eyes. “It’s princess, R.H.M.”
He smiled as he lowered his head to kiss me again. “Yes, Princess.”
