You Never Will

Leah
“I-I c-can?” I stuttered.
“Yes, Leah.”
I nuzzled into his neck, sniffling deeply as I tried to calm down. “But what about the rules?” I whispered.
His hands moved down my back soothingly. “Fuck the rules, Leah. Sometimes in life, you have to throw caution to the wind. I couldn’t let him take her away. She was terrified of him.”
I shook my head. “She wasn’t terrified when she watched him rape me.”
He stiffened under me. “I’m sorry, Leah. I didn’t think.”
“It’s okay. I know you try to save everyone. I just don’t want to be around her. Anyone that can watch someone do that to another and not try to help is not someone I want to be friendly with.”
“I understand. Why don’t you get some things gathered and we can go to my place,” he told me.
“Okay.”
I quickly got off his lap to grab some clothes and supplies for Sugar while R. H. M. disappeared from sight. I had a lot of respect for him for trying to help her, but I liked the fact that he understood my panic enough to offer me an alternative place to stay. It really screamed that he cared and made me believe even more that I was safe with him. By the time I was done packing, R.H.M. was walking back inside with Sugar by his side. He rushed over to me to take my bag from me.
“Is this everything for tonight?” He asked.
“Yes.”
He pulled me close to his chest for a moment before letting me go. “Come on.”
I followed him to the door where I stopped as panic began to swamp me again. He turned toward me, opening his arms. I moved into them, breathing deeply as I struggled to slow my heart rate back to normal. After a few minutes, I stepped back and wiped my face on my shirt.
“I’m sorry. I just–”
He tipped my face up before kissing me softly. “Don’t be. I should have been smarter about this. I shouldn’t have sprung this on you like this. Stay close to me, princess. I don’t want you to be afraid when you see her.”
“Okay,” I whispered almost silently.
He waited for a moment before taking the leash off the hook beside the front door to hook Sugar up. I gripped the leash tightly while he opened the front door, stepping out onto the porch before stopping. When I stood right behind him with his shirt fisted in my hand, he slowly moved down the stairs, keeping me hidden directly behind him. He nodded his head back toward the door.
“You may go in. Rosemary will get you settled in and I will be by later tonight to collect the rest of the things inside that do not belong to you. Rosemary will stay with you until I get back, okay?”
“Yes, sir,” Darcy said, sending a wave of panic through me.
R. H. M. reached behind him to take my wrist in his hand, running his thumb over my skin. “When I come back, I will get you the handbook. You will need to read it in entirety before Mister sets up your meeting with him. He is who decides if you stay or not.” He took a step back and to the side, turning slightly. I mirrored his movements to stay unseen. “You may go inside.”
I moved closer to him as Darcy and Rosemary approached us. I lowered my head to hide my face as I tried to breathe through the tightness in my chest. When the door softly closed, I let out a whimper. R. H. M. set my bag on the ground before turning toward me, instantly gripping my face as he put his forehead against mine.
“Just breathe, Leah,” he murmured. “In and out. In and out. Slower. In. And out. Good girl. And again. In and out.”
When I reached up to wrap my shaking hands around his wrists, he pursed his lips for a moment, letting them brush against mine before pulling back.
“Come on, Leah. Let’s go.”
As he was bending down to pick up my bag, the door opened behind us.
“Excuse me, sir? May I–it’s you!” Darcy shrieked, making me flinch.
R. H. M. immediately stepped in front of me again. “Go back inside, Darcy,” he instructed.
“But, that’s Leah. Will’s wife! Why is she here?”
“For the same reason you are. To heal and get better. First rule of Eden is that we do not say each other’s real names. So, do not use her real name. Secondly, I asked you to stay inside until I came back. Whatever you need, Rosemary can help you with. We will speak further when I come back.”
Darcy turned back around to go inside. He waited until the door was closed before quickly leading me away. I kept pace with him all the way back to his office where he took me to a room off the side of his desk. I look around in surprise at his small room before sitting hesitantly down on his bed.
“So this is your room…”
“Yes it is,” he confirmed, running his hand through his hair. “I know it’s a little small, but we won’t ever close the door. I don’t want you to be afraid to be here.”
I reached into my pocket to play with the master key inside. “It’s okay, R. H. M. I’ll be okay.”
He sat next to me, taking my hand. “I know you will be, but I always want you to feel safe.”
“I do. You make me feel safe.”
He brought my hand to his mouth. “Good. I have to go back to the house to collect some things for you. Well, and talk to her about Eden. Are you going to be okay for a while here by yourself?”
“Umm, yes. Sure,” I muttered, already getting anxious.
He got up to walk around to the other side of the bed to get a computer before coming back to set it up on the small bedside table on my side. He pulled up the security cameras at my house before placing the computer on the little table.
“What are you doing?” I asked quietly.
“Making sure you know that I am not interested in her. That her being here is all about saving her life,” he told me.
My gaze jumped up to his while I melted inside at his words. “I wasn’t worried about that.”
He smiled softly at me as he tucked some of my hair behind my ear. “Maybe not, but I want you to know that you will never have to.”
He kissed me again before standing up to leave. Sugar followed him out before coming back to lay down next to me. I took her leash off before wrapping my arms around her, hugging her tightly as I watched Rosemary and Darcy on the living room camera.
“I’m glad you like him, Sugar bear. Because Mommy really, really likes him too…”
