Chapter 62
Luara's POV
I wasn't sure if I had even heard Bryan right, the man standing in front of us was his grandfather?
A frown echoed on my face as they continued to greet each other, I was beyond confused at this new information of Bryan still having a living family member. I wondered whether or not this was his mother's father or his dad's father, but from the smile on his grandfather's face, I quickly knew that it was his mother's.
"I'm Maxwell, you must be Bryan's mate whom he hasn't mentioned anything about?" He said while giving me a smile but also looking at Bryan disappointedly.
"Luara." I replied back with a smile. I looked up to see Bryan rolling his eyes at Maxwell, but he still had a slight smile on his face.
"Well, come in, I'll show you to your room." Maxwell said, before leading us into his home. I could hear young children playing as we walked through the kitchen, as I caught a view of them messing about in the garden.
We soon began ascending some stairs with me still in Bryan's arms, as we were led into a gorgeous bedroom, where Maxwell left us to get situated but not without inviting us to dinner later on that evening.
I happily accepted on behalf of Bryan and me before Maxwell nodded and left to show our guards where they would be staying.
Once Bryan and I were alone, he gently placed me down on the bed but he suddenly began pacing up and down the room, I was confused by his behavior but I considered that it was due to being surrounded by the situation concerning his grandfather.
Bryan was refusing to look at me, even though I knew he knew that I was staring at him.
There were so many questions that I wanted and needed to be answered, that I couldn't decipher by myself, but I didn't want to intrude into Bryan's mind as he seemed like he was in deep thought already without me intruding in on his thoughts.
I continued to believe that this was Bryan's mother's father's house due to the friendliness of his grandfather and from everything that I knew of Bryan's father's side of the family, I wouldn't expect to be quite greeted in quite the same manner.
I watched silently as Bryan continued to pace up and down the room. He was attempting to suppress his emotions from me, but he was unable to protect them all, I was able to feel that he was anxious, which was surprising as that wasn't Bryan.
I felt uncomfortable that my mate was feeling this way, so I got up and walked towards him, making sure to wrap my arms around his waist.
"You okay?" He questioned, his deep voice sounding concerned, which took me back because it shouldn't be him feeling concerned about me.
"I'm fine, but are you?" I said, looking up at him, and he caught my gaze.
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" He said, trying to sound confident but I knew it was all a facade.
"You're not though." I said bluntly, not liking the fact that he was trying to hide his emotions from me.
He didn't reply, he simply placed a kiss on my forehead and stayed silent.
"Why are we here Bryan, I thought you had no family left?" I questioned, making sure to keep my voice low and sensitive not wanting to hurt Bryan as I knew it was such a sore subject for him.
We stood in silence for a while, but Bryan suddenly began pulling me towards the door.
"Where are we going?" I questioned as we began to descend the stairs hand in hand.
"I want to show you something," Bryan replied and simply began leading me out of the house and into the woods.
I didn't say anything, I just allowed him to direct me to wherever we were going.
We began walking through a meadow that was filled with long grass, and beautiful flowers that were in the first stages of blooming. Bryan continued to pull me through the meadow until we approached a tall Oak tree surrounded by beautiful bright-colored roses.
Bryan let go of my hand and reached out towards the bark on the tree where he began to trace out a name, which I soon realized was his mother's name.
"My mom's buried just under this tree," Bryan suddenly said through the silence.
"Her name was Claire by the way." He said while he continued to trace out the craved name on the tree.
"After my father killed my mom, I couldn't help but retaliate as all the anger over the years of me not being able to protect myself and my mom, I just simply snapped and I killed him, I didn't even hesitate and went straight for his jugular." Bryan's voice was so cold and held no emotion as he spoke about the death of his father.
"I couldn't control myself, I ripped him into shreds, and his blood was dripping down the walls and soaking into the carpet but I couldn't bring myself to stop, even throughout his screaming." I reached out for his hand, his eyes were glassy and I could see that his mind was far away from reality.
"Once he was dead, I called my grandfather, he's not my real grandfather but my mom has always seen him as her dad since he came into her life when she was three and from then on he acted like she was his own pup."
I just nodded, I didn't want to interrupt him because it was rare that Bryan would ever share so much information or any at all. So I stayed silent and allowed him to talk without interrupting.
"My grandfather came onto my land and took my mom back to his territory to this tree where he buried her as this was their favorite place, where he would read my mom stories when she was a little girl and also where my mom would tell me stories. This is a place of memories, happy ones whereas my territory is just, just hell. And it's not somewhere I wanted my mom to be buried."
"Even though my grandfather isn't actually blood-related to me, I see him as my family, but I simply don't share that with anyone, not even him." I just gripped onto his hand tighter, wanting him to feel comfort.
He looked at me and gave me a small, gazed smile before looking into the distance, his thoughts and feelings vulnerable.
I kept my eyes trained on him, just staring straight at him. I felt hurt and sadness for him, but I knew he wouldn't want that, he'd hate that.
A few minutes went by before Bryan squeezed my hand, capturing my attention.
"We should go back, or we'll be late for dinner." I nodded, as we had been out here for over an hour and his grandfather had kindly invited us to dinner. I didn't want to be rude and turn up late and I knew Bryan didn't want to be out here any longer.
Once back at his grandfather's house, we both quickly showered and got refreshed before going downstairs into the dining room for dinner.
"Thank you for visiting, I haven't seen you in a while Bryan and it's a pleasure to meet your mate, after waiting so long for you to find her." Maxwell said as his maids begin clearing our finished plates.
Bryan gave a small smile, "It hasn't been that long since you last saw me, last time was when I first started having problems with Prince."
I frowned at that, I knew there was an Alpha named Prince but I didn't know that Bryan had a recent problem with him.
"Hmm, how is that now? I had a call from him the other day, he wanted to know if my grandson was still trying to take over his land." Maxwell's comment had me confused and I immediately turned to look at Bryan.
"What's this about Bryan?" I questioned.
He looked at me for a moment, "A few months back, I was looking for an expansion of our land, and unfortunately for Prince, it's his land that I want."
"Why do you want more land, you have miles and miles of land? What do you need it for?" My eyebrows scrunched together as I waited for an answer, and by the look on Maxwell's face, he also didn't know the answer.
"For the future, I plan on making my pack stronger, bigger, and more effective. For my family, for my children, and for theirs. I want them to have everything and I want to be able to give them everything that my father did not. I want them to feel stable, safe, and protected within my territory and with money."
"Well, if it's been a few months since you were going to overtake his land. Have you canceled your plans?" It was Maxwell's turn to question.
"Not at all. Just before I was about to complete my plans to overtake his territory, I found Luara, and since then I pushed it to the back of my mind as I had other situations to deal with, and now they've all been sorted, I'm going back to my original plans and that's one of the reasons why I'm here Maxwell."
"Hmm, and I thought you were visiting me to actually see me, not for business purposes." Maxwell said, his comment intended light-heartedly.
"You know how it is." Bryan said.
"I know how you are." Maxwell replied with a meaning behind his words.
It was silent for a while after that, and Maxwell soon changed the conversation.
It soon began getting dark and before I knew it, Bryan was carrying my sleeping body up the stairs to bed after I had fallen asleep on the sofa while Bryan and Maxwell caught up with one another.
I was so happy to see Bryan smile and laugh and I knew it was because he was in Maxwell's presence, whether he wanted to admit it or not, he had a love for his grandfather.
I was proud that Bryan had opened up to me about his mother and told me stories that I know he keeps close to his heart and hidden in his chest.
"Bryan," I mumbled as he placed me down softly on the bed while I kept my eyes closed.
"Hmm?" He mumbled back at me.
"I love you." I said as I yawned tiredly.
"I love you." He repeated before placing a kiss on my forehead as I found myself falling into a deep slumber.
I realized then, that being mad at Bryan and wanting to hate him every time he does something that I don't agree with, isn't going to change him.
He does everything for a reason, whether I think it's valid or not, he does it for the better of his pack and for the family that he has.
