Chapter 102

Alice juggled two phones in one hand while unbuckling her seatbelt. "You told Lucas and Gavin you were hitting the supermarket. Is he freaking out 'cause he's scared you'll buy something you shouldn't buy?"

David shot her a grin. "What do you think?"

"Are you gonna buy it or not?" Alice stared him down.

"Do you want me to?" David got out of the car, holding Alice's hand as they walked. "Relax, I won't."

Alice mumbled under her breath, "But you had a big bowl of soup... what if..." She knew the basics; she wasn't a kid.

David pushed the shopping cart into the supermarket and shrugged, "Then I'll just take a few more cold showers." He couldn't really make things tough for her, could he? Even if he wanted to, now wasn't the time.

David grabbed some daily essentials and then led her to the snack aisle.

"Grab whatever you want," David said.

"Really? Anything?" Alice asked.

David gave her a look. "Depends."

Alice pouted, thinking David was so inconsistent.

While Alice browsed, David texted the family to confirm the shopping list. Just as the cart rolled up, a familiar voice cut in. "David."

He turned to see Lila, her cart loaded with frozen foods. She was dressed down in a sweatshirt, her curly hair tied up, looking chill.

Lila pushed her cart next to his and smiled, glancing at his cart. "What a coincidence! I haven't moved into the apartment yet; I decided not to."

David frowned slightly but stayed quiet.

Lila looked down and spoke slowly, "I don't know what Dylan told you that made you misunderstand me, and I don't know how you've been these years, but my feelings for you haven't changed. I just didn't want to be a burden to you..." She gave a bitter smile, "But I didn't expect that after three years, you would leave."

Alice came over with snacks, freezing when she saw them together. Luckily, David stepped in, took the snacks from her, and put them in the cart, then picked a few and handed them back to her. "Put these back."

Alice pouted at David. "But I want to eat them..."

David stared her down, and after a few seconds, she reluctantly put the snacks back and returned, looking bummed out.

David sighed, "Eat fewer snacks; these are enough."

Alice shot him a cold look. "You sure like to control me."

"Hello." Lila stepped forward and nodded politely at Alice, "I'm Lila Green."

Alice glanced at David and then nodded back. "I'm Alice Bailey."

"I know you." Lila gave David a complicated look. "You're David's girlfriend."

Alice licked her lips and nudged David. "You go check out; I'll chat with Ms. Green for a bit."

"What did you say?" David was stunned.

"Go check out!" Alice pulled Lila aside, urging David to leave.

David stared at them, not happy.

"You think I'd do something to your girlfriend?" Lila forced a smile, "Don't worry. There are so many people here; what could I do?"

David still didn't move.

Lila's smile got a bit stiff. He used to listen to everything she said.

Alice looked at David, then at Lila, hesitated for a moment, and went back to David's side.

Alright, she gave up. She still had to share a room with him tonight, and who knew what would happen if she annoyed him? She could learn about her rival later.

David, with a sullen face, pulled Alice to the checkout without saying a word, making Alice anxious.

Back in the car, Alice buckled her seatbelt and looked at David. His hands were on the steering wheel, but he hadn't fastened his seatbelt. The car lights outside occasionally shone in, making his face look even grimmer.
