Chapter 35

After dinner, Alice grabbed a thicker coat from her room and headed out with David to the spot Desmond had mentioned.

The lobby was decked out, warm and cozy inside. There were quite a few folks around, and the front desk was even handing out free drinks.

"David!" Dylan spotted him and passed his cue stick to someone nearby as he strolled over.

Alice had met Dylan once before. Seeing him, she instinctively craned her neck, scanning the pool table area for Simon.

Dylan walked up, gave David a nod, then turned to Alice. He flicked her forehead with a grin, "Quit looking. Simon's not here. That dude's been acting all weird lately, staying home and moping about being heartbroken."

"Oh, Alice is here!" Desmond, rocking a red shirt with sleeves rolled up, walked over and placed his glass on a waiter's tray.

"Alice, I got you a VIP card. Go wild, have fun." Desmond pulled out a black card with gold lettering from his pocket and handed it to Alice.

Alice glanced at David. Seeing him nod, she took the card and dove into the crowd, curiosity piqued.

Dylan raised an eyebrow at Desmond, "Alice?"

Desmond, annoyed, slapped Dylan's hand away, "What's your deal? Don't you recognize her?"

Dylan sneered, "Of course I do. I even know their deal."

Desmond looked puzzled for a moment.

Dylan glanced at David, "David's little fiancée, his legit fiancée. She's too young, so no engagement party yet. Got it?"

Desmond's eyes widened as he looked at David. "You lied to me again!"

David shrugged, hands in his coat pockets, "How did I lie? She is my little girl, Alice."

Desmond was too mad to speak.

Ignoring Desmond, Dylan patted David on the shoulder, and the two walked over to the sofa. There were two glasses on the table. Dylan poured two glasses of whiskey, picked up one, and handed it to David.

David shook his head.

Dylan laughed, downed his drink, and teased, "Still scared to drink after that last plan?"

Mentioning that embarrassing incident made even David chuckle.

He had gone through all that trouble, only to end up with his own wishful thinking.

He had planned to gently reject Alice, but she ended up rejecting him straight up.

"How are you two getting along now?" Dylan asked.

"Us?" David questioned.

Dylan was annoyed by David's vague response, "You and Alice! I didn't dare say much to Desmond; that guy can't keep his mouth shut. If he knows something, he might accidentally spill the beans. I just want to know, are you still holding the same attitude?"

"Yeah," David nodded, "but some things have changed."

Hearing this, Dylan's heart skipped a beat, and he couldn't help but glance over at Alice.

"What’s changed?" Dylan asked.

David squinted slightly, watching Alice bowl by herself not far away, and said slowly, "I didn't get how rough Alice had it with the Bailey Family before. Now that I know, I wanna handle their mess for her before we call off this engagement."

David turned to look at Dylan, "I've looked after her for four years, treated her like a kid. If she goes back and gets humiliated or mistreated, I won't stand for it."

Dylan stayed quiet.

He just stared at David's profile for a long time. David asked, "What are you looking at?"

Dylan picked up the other glass of whiskey and downed it, wiping his mouth, "Nothing."

David watched Alice holding a bowling ball for a long time, then got up, patted Dylan on the shoulder, and said, "I'll be right back." Then he walked towards Alice.

He was rocking a black turtleneck, a brown wool coat over it, his hair softly falling over his eyebrows, his eyes gentle, and his lips were like holding a faint smile, or maybe not. His tall, handsome appearance caught the attention of many women present. They were itching to find an excuse to chat him up.

David walked up to Alice. She was still growing. Last time she only reached his shoulder, but now she was taller than that.

She was looking down, frowning, muttering something David couldn't hear. But up close, Alice's skin looked great, with only faint dark circles, almost no acne. Her hair was so smooth it looked like it’d be nice to touch.

"If you don't know how to play, I can teach you," David finally spoke.

"No." Alice's expression was serious, "I was just thinking if this thing could kill someone."

"Why are you thinking about something so dangerous?" David asked.

Alice sighed like someone who had been through a lot, "In case of a fight in the future, I could choose this as a weapon."

Before she could finish, David, annoyed, pinched her cheeks, "What did you say?"

Alice looked up, her eyes wide, "David, you beast! Let go of my face! Let go!"

David raised an eyebrow, his tone with a hint of danger, "Call me Uncle David."

"No!" She shouted.

"Be good."

"David Tudor!" She refused to give in.

"Alice." David's voice was low.

Alice puffed her cheeks and stared at David for a long time.

David's eyebrows furrowed. He was just about to find a place to properly educate the disobedient Alice, but then Alice softly said, “Brother..."

Hearing this, his heart moved, giving him a strange feeling.
