Chapter 15
David was at a loss for words.
Gavin caught his look and got it. "Yeah, she is still young, but she can grow up, but if you think she's got a bad temper, then what about yourself? Felix is the chillest in the Tudor clan. James? He's just throwing fits. Caleb's temper? I can handle that. But you? When you lose it, even I can't guess what you'll do next!"
David just stood there, speechless. "Grandpa."
Gavin waved him off. "Save it. I don't wanna hear it. I just think Alice is a great match to you."
Gavin shot David a look, snorted, and walked out.
Thinking about Alice's wild antics, David felt a headache coming on.
Alice headed upstairs to her room. The moment she stepped in, she knew something was off.
She shut the door carefully and looked at David.
After a few minutes of awkward silence, just as Alice was about to say something, David blurted out, "What do you think of me?"
Alice was thrown off. After a bit, she said, "Uh, pretty good?"
David's face darkened. "Do you like me?"
Alice felt a chill run down her spine and forced a smile. "Yeah." She figured if she said no, David might lose it.
The room went dead silent, only their breathing filling the space.
Alice clutched her pants, staring at David, wondering what had gotten into him. 'What do you think of me? Do you like me? Aren't these questions guys ask when they're hitting on girls?'
"David's only 26; it's not like he's so desperate." Alice's muttering didn't go unnoticed by David. His mouth twitched, and he started doubting if Gavin had driven him nuts, making him ask Alice such weird questions.
He must've lost it, for sure.
David patted Alice's head. "It's nothing. Go rest."
Still puzzled, Alice went back to her room. Her pajamas were neatly folded on the bed, and a plate of fruit was wrapped in plastic on the table. She changed into the pajamas Seraphina had set out for her, got into bed, and placed the fruit on the nightstand. She munched on it while scrolling through her phone, trying to get sleepy.
The next morning, after breakfast, Alice and David headed back to the villa.
David went upstairs to change for work. Before leaving, he remembered something, pulled out his phone, and transferred Alice's monthly allowance.
Alice was lying on the bed, bored, scrolling through Facebook when a message popped up. She clicked on it, and the next second, she jumped out of bed, ran to the window without even putting on her slippers, and shouted to David, who was getting into the car, "David!"
David paused and looked up.
Alice waved her phone, shocked. "I get that much allowance a month?"
She had thought her allowance would be between $300 and $800. Because she didn't need to buy skincare or makeup, and she had Simon for the occasional free drink.
When she was with the Bailey family, Lucas would increase her allowance as she got older, but it was never that much.
Alice looked at David with newfound admiration. "David, don't worry. I'll spend it wisely!"
David didn't want to be late for work, so he just got into the car and drove off.
At the office, David put his briefcase on the sofa, unbuttoned his suit, and sent a text to Alice.
Meanwhile, Alice was on the bus.
After reading the text, she felt like she'd been hit by a truck.
David: [That's your monthly allowance. If you cause trouble and need to pay for damages, it'll come out of that. If you get detained by the cops, I can bail you out, but the bail money will come out of that. In the future, if you get into fights and need to pay medical or emotional damages, it'll come out of that.]
Alice slowly clenched her phone.
Typical businessman. Slick as a fox!
David focused on his work. After finishing his morning tasks, he sighed in relief and picked up his phone. Seeing no messages, he frowned.
He opened Alice's profile and saw his previous message. He wondered if he'd been too harsh. Alice's bright eyes when she got her allowance kept popping into his mind. Looking down again, David felt he might've been a bit too harsh.
But the message sent hours ago couldn't be unsent. Now, he didn't know what to do. Alice was probably out there causing trouble to blow off steam.
