Chapter 153
Alice and David were stunned: "How did you know?"
James shrugged, "I ran into them on the street last time."
Ophelia and Lila walking together?
Alice frowned and gently nudged David with her elbow, "Lila is causing trouble again."
David felt a bit helpless and couldn't argue, so he just pinched Alice's cheek helplessly, placed his hand on the back of the chair, almost encircling Alice between his arm and the table, "Lila is indeed my ex-girlfriend, but what she's doing now has nothing to do with me. This mistake can't be blamed on me."
Alice glanced sideways at David, then turned to face him and asked, "I'm no longer the young lady of the Bailey family." Without money and status, even the name "Alice" wasn't hers anymore.
"That's just perfect," David said, "Although you're no longer the young lady of the Bailey family, you're my fiancée. The title of fiancée is much more useful than the young lady of the Bailey family."
James, sitting across from them, had a look of disgust on his face. To avoid hearing more nauseating words, he immediately got up, grabbed his coat and car keys, and left.
Alice sighed, "It's quite useful, but I should have a name, right? The name 'Alice' might not even be my real name. Anyway, I know I'm not called 'Ophelia.' I want to find my real name. Otherwise, will you all just call me 'David's fiancée' in the future?"
David noticed that Alice had been troubled by the issue of her name recently. Even if Lucas was unwilling to tell her the truth, she was still very eager to know. He also understood that the elders might be hiding something from Alice, possibly related to her true identity. As for why they were hiding it, he didn't want to delve into it, only believing that the two elders wouldn't harm their beloved Alice.
He changed the topic with a teasing tone, "By the way, since you said I can't call you 'Alice,' should I call you 'Miss' or just 'Wife' now?"
Alice was speechless.
"Alright, Miss," David said with a smile, ruffling Alice's hair and tapping the table with his fingers, "Finish your meal, don't leave any leftovers."
Alice silently finished the food in her bowl.
David shook his head with a smile, knowing without guessing what Alice was muttering in her heart, probably complaining that he was usually gentle and considerate but liked to meddle at critical moments.
After dinner, David took Alice, who was about to go upstairs, out for a walk, and they unexpectedly ran into Gavin.
Gavin was chatting under the shade of a tree, holding a small yellow dog. The dog wagged its tail leisurely and, upon hearing a noise, turned around and barked a few times when it saw Alice.
Gavin turned around and raised his eyebrows in surprise, "Are you two out for a walk?"
David, holding Alice's hand, walked over, nodded to the elderly person Gavin was talking to, and then replied, "Yes."
Gavin snorted, "I just saw James driving away. Where is he off to now? He hasn't even graduated from college yet! All he knows is making money. Isn't the money I give him enough?"
Before David could explain, Gavin started to complain, "You two brothers should stop giving him startup funds! James is so arrogant, starting a business before he even graduates. He'll get arrested by the police sooner or later!"
David was speechless.
Gavin, holding the dog, said goodbye to the others and muttered as he walked home.
Watching Gavin's back, Alice looked at David, "James is so young and self-sufficient, doing so well. Why doesn't Grandpa seem happy?"
David explained, "Grandpa wants him to finish his studies before venturing out. Otherwise, he won't be able to manage both, and James will likely give up his studies for his business. We don't know who he takes after. Felix had to take over the company out of necessity, I didn't want to work in the family business and chose to start my own, and James is also passionate about entrepreneurship. He had ideas in high school, but we didn't give him money back then."
They walked hand in hand in the breeze.
Alice asked, "What happened later?"
David replied, "Later, James did well in his exams, and since his birthday was coming up, he asked us for some money. Who knew he would use it to start a business? He actually achieved something, so no one said anything anymore, except Grandpa wasn't happy."
People from Gavin's generation always felt that providing for their children's education was already very difficult. Even though it's now possible to buy a degree with money, their deeply ingrained beliefs are hard to change. They always hope their descendants can complete their studies.
Just after finishing his words, Alice suddenly sighed.
David stopped and asked her, "What's wrong?"
Alice looked a bit dejected, "Is Grandpa unwilling to tell me about my background because my parents were particularly strange or as bad as Ophelia's adoptive parents, so they've been hiding it?"
David was about to comfort her when she sighed again, "If that's the case, would they cling to you like gold when they see you? Should I stop them? On one hand, they are my relatives, and on the other, you are my partner. Wouldn't I be in a difficult position?"
David corrected her, "Fiancé."
Alice: "Alright, fiancé. Wouldn't that make it even more difficult for me? Forget it, let's leave it to fate. Grandpa must have his reasons for doing this. At least, from childhood to now, he has never let me suffer."
David smiled, held her hand tightly, and continued walking.
