Chapter 17
Alice stood there, watching David's car disappear into the distance, feeling like she was in a fog. After what felt like forever, she snapped out of it and headed towards the school.
When she hit the corner, she stopped, whipped out her phone, and started looking up Apex Technologies Group. She wanted to grill Felix about David's girlfriend.
But halfway through her search, she had a lightbulb moment—she couldn't do that.
From the way David acted, it was clear his breakup had left a nasty mark. Sure, it looked like it had healed, but it was one of those wounds that would start bleeding again if you poked it.
Everyone'd got their skeletons. She'd already messed up by ripping open David's old wound. Digging deeper with Felix would just be plain mean.
David stepped out of the elevator and asked the receptionist, "Anyone looking for me?"
The receptionist shook her head, "Nope, but there was this girl hanging around outside earlier. She didn't come in, so..."
Before she could finish, David was already heading out. At the door, he spotted Alice sitting a few steps away, looking all kinds of upset.
There was a coffee cup by Alice's feet.
David licked his lips, walked down the steps, and plopped down next to the coffee. He grabbed a cup and took a sip of the cold brew. It tasted like crap.
"Not bad. Where'd you get it?" David asked.
Alice didn't say a word, leaning away from him.
David chuckled, put the coffee back in the bag, and scooted closer to Alice. "Didn't you call me out here? Well, here I am."
"Took you long enough." Alice's eyes were red with anger. "I thought I'd be sitting here all night, turning into a statue."
David laughed, ruffling her hair. "Alright, my bad. I shouldn't be mad at you. I'm the older one here." He touched Alice's cheek, which was cold from the wind.
"Let's go." David grabbed the bag and held out his hand to Alice.
She looked from his face to his hand. After a few seconds, she put her hand in his. David held her cold hand, pulled her up from the steps, and led the sulking Alice into the building. The receptionist's eyes nearly popped out of her head.
When Alice got out of the elevator, she made a mental note that David's office was on the 26th floor.
Garrett saw David come back and was about to say something when he noticed the young girl trailing behind him. His jaw dropped, and he was speechless for a moment.
David put the bag on the table and waved a hand in front of Garrett. "Heat up the coffee and bring it to my office."
Garrett snapped out of it and nodded, "Got it!"
With that, he couldn't help but glance at Alice, checking her out from head to toe. He figured this girl was probably the reason behind the personal stuff David had asked him about twice.
Before Alice could figure out what Garrett's look meant, David had already led her into his office.
