Chapter 144
As soon as the two came down the stairs, Marcus appeared with Juniper and Celeste, followed by Ophelia.
Seeing Ophelia, Esme quickly ran over and said with a smile, "You're here, I thought you weren't coming."
Ophelia smiled at Esme and instinctively glanced at Alice and David ahead. Alice was tilting her head and whispering to David, who was holding her hand tightly and listening intently. The affectionate scene made Ophelia's heart ache.
"Ophelia?" Esme noticed the change in Ophelia's expression and asked with some concern, "What's wrong? You don't look well, do you need to rest?"
Ophelia shook her head and smiled slightly, "It's nothing, I'm just a bit nervous because I've never seen such a big event."
Esme breathed a sigh of relief, "Don't be nervous! I'm here with you. Simon and Nathan will be here soon, you know them, right? If I'm not around, just stick with them."
"Okay." Ophelia nodded.
Before long, Dylan, Simon, and Nathan arrived late. Nathan was wearing an ill-fitting suit and kept adjusting his tie.
"Can you believe this? I'm just an ordinary guy, and I'm attending a high-society party. Who would believe it?" Nathan whispered to Simon.
Dylan glanced back at Nathan and signaled Simon to go in and greet the guests.
After Dylan went in, Simon turned to Nathan and patted his shoulder, "Don't be nervous. With our relationship, you'll definitely be invited to my wedding in the future!"
Nathan smiled wryly, "I should keep some heart medication on hand."
Simon sighed helplessly, "Let's go."
On the other side, Juniper stared in Alice's direction, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes. She tugged on Marcus's sleeve and whispered, "Before Lucas arrives, let's clear things up!"
Marcus frowned, "How can we talk about this in such a setting? There are so many people here. Do you want to embarrass the Bailey family?"
Juniper became anxious, "When Lucas brought Alice into the family, did he consider dignity? The paternity test results are out, and it's solid evidence! Alice is not your daughter, and the marriage alliance isn't for our Bailey family!"
Celeste chimed in, "That's right, Dad. There's still time to fix this. If the Tudor family finds out the truth, what will happen to us? This was Grandpa's arrangement, why should we be implicated?"
Marcus looked around and saw Ophelia standing quietly in the corner, feeling conflicted.
He never imagined that the Alice he had raised for 20 years wasn't his biological daughter, while his real daughter, Ophelia, had suffered outside and almost couldn't go to school. All of this was caused by Lucas.
"Marcus!" "Dad!" Marcus finally made up his mind and stood up, saying, "Alright, you two wait here. I'll go talk to Caleb. Don't cause any trouble!"
Juniper and Celeste watched Marcus walk towards Caleb, feeling relieved. Even if the real illegitimate daughter Ophelia entered the Bailey family, it was better than dealing with the troublesome Alice.
Juniper looked at Ophelia and sneered, "What is she? Without Lucas's support, she's nothing."
Celeste agreed, "Mom is right, she's not a threat. Besides, the marriage contract will naturally fall on her. If she's smart, she should give this opportunity to me."
Juniper smiled and patted Celeste's hand, "Why would I lie to you? Stick to the plan, and we'll win for sure."
In the study, Caleb sat on the sofa and asked, "Marcus, what do you need to discuss here?"
Marcus hesitated for a moment but then handed Caleb a folder, "Mr. Tudor, please take a look first. I really don't know how to start."
Caleb took the folder, opened it, and his face instantly turned grim.
"Mr. Bailey, this is no time for jokes. What do you mean by showing me this at such an event? Are you canceling the engagement or revealing Alice's true identity?"
Marcus quickly explained, "I wouldn't dare! I'm not happy about this either. The paternity test shows that this girl named Ophelia is my biological daughter, and only Alice was brought back by my father. Mr. Tudor, there's nothing I can do about this!"
