Chapter 129

Lucas shot back, "Meds are bad. If I'd taken them, I'd be fine by now and wouldn't be stuck here. I know my body better than anyone. I don't need you worrying about me. I know what to take and what to avoid!"

Marcus, at a loss, looked to Gavin for backup.

But Gavin just shook his head, "Nah, don't count on me. I'm just here to see whose life is cushier between us old guys." He threw a playful, challenging look at Lucas.

Lucas, clearly annoyed by the questioning, snapped, "It's just a little illness, right? Is it really worth all this fuss? Just leave already; it's nothing."

Right then, the door burst open, and Alice stormed in, looking both upset and angry, with a doctor in a white coat trailing behind her.

Alice tossed her backpack to the ground with a thud, breaking the silence.

Everyone went quiet.

Even Gavin, usually calm, was taken aback. He glanced at David, who seemed unfazed, then turned away from Alice.

Lucas was wide-eyed, unable to react.

Alice, trying to keep her cool, was clearly worried and urgent.

She said, "Grandpa, you're already at this age. Do you need your granddaughter to beg you to take your medicine?"

Lucas, stunned, glared at Marcus. "Didn't you say you didn't tell Alice? You jerk!"

Feeling guilty, Lucas awkwardly smiled at Alice, "Alice, I'm fine. It's just a cold, not as bad as they say. They love to exaggerate."

Alice pursed her lips and looked at the doctor.

The doctor sighed. As Lucas's doctor, he couldn't hide the truth, especially since Lucas only seemed to listen to his granddaughter.

The doctor said, "Actually, Lucas's health isn't what it used to be."

Before he could finish, Lucas stood up, walked to Alice with his cane, pulled her close, glared at the doctor, and softly reassured her, "Alice, don't listen to him! He's just trying to scare me into taking the meds. You don't believe me? I'll take them right now."

Lucas turned to the doctor, gave him a serious look, then took a few pills and swallowed them with water.

He slammed the cup back on the tray. The doctor didn't mind the glare, as long as Lucas took his medicine.

The doctor said, "Alright, I'm leaving now. If you need anything, come to my office."

As soon as the doctor left, the heavy atmosphere returned.

Lucas hesitated, unsure how to comfort Alice, and kept glaring at Marcus in frustration.

At that moment, David stepped in.

He walked up to Alice, pulled her into his arms, gently pressed her head against his chest, and slowly scolded Lucas, "Mr. Lucas Bailey, this time you've gone too far."

Lucas looked confused, "What?"

"Exactly!" Gavin said, gripping the chair's armrest as he stood up. "Look at how upset you've made Alice! How old are you, still playing these childish games? If you're sick, you need to take your medicine! Do you get that?"

"She's my Alice!" Lucas trembled with anger, barely holding back from hitting Gavin with his cane.

Gavin glanced at him and then smiled at Marcus, "Alright, alright, Lucas has taken his medicine. If you have things to do, you should go. We'll keep an eye on him; there won't be any problems."

Marcus, feeling a bit awkward, said, "How can I impose on you like this?"

Gavin replied, "What's there to be embarrassed about? We're family. Besides, Lucas is my old war buddy. It's fine; you can go. We don't need so many people here."

Since Gavin said so, Marcus had no choice but to head back to the company.

He glanced at Juniper and Celeste, signaling them to leave and not cause trouble.

Juniper had no desire to stay and watch Lucas comfort Alice, nor did she want Celeste to witness the intimate scene between Lucas and Alice. With a serious expression, Juniper said, "We're leaving," and pulled Celeste out of the nursing home.

Alice clung tightly to David's suit jacket, unable to speak as if something was stuck in her chest.

Gavin glanced at her, then pointed at Lucas, silently shaking his head, indicating that he was in trouble.

Lucas's mouth twitched, ignoring Gavin. Then he walked over to Alice, patting her shoulder. "Alice, I took the medicine. Don't be mad, okay? I'll cooperate with the doctor from now on."

Alice said, "You're lying! I don't believe you!"

Hearing her tearful voice, Lucas was heartbroken and hurriedly explained, "I won't lie to you anymore! How about this, if I don't take my medicine, I'll have the nurse call you every day to complain about me."

The nurse outside was speechless.

Alice broke free from David's embrace, turned around, and looked at Lucas.

She had forced back her tears, but the bloodshot around her eyes made it hard to watch.

Lucas felt a mix of emotions. If he had known he would make Alice cry, he wouldn't have tried to be so tough!

"I promise you, or should I write a guarantee?" Lucas thought it was a good idea and immediately prepared to go to the table to write.

"Grandpa!" Alice, seeing him really about to write something, was both angry and amused. She ran over to stop him and pulled him to sit down.

On the other side, Gavin thoughtfully closed the door as he left, giving them space to talk. Then he would settle accounts with David.

"You knew Alice would come?" Gavin smiled slightly, but it looked terrifying.

David leaned against the wall, arms crossed, and chuckled, "I got a call outside and it was from Alice's classmate, who told me about that. Then Alice texted me, so I knew she would come."

Gavin angrily said, "Why didn't you tell me earlier? If she had heard what we said just now, I..."

How could he maintain his good image in front of Alice?
