Chapter 66
Esme chuckled softly. "Leave? No way. Aren't you worried I'll call the cops the second I walk out?"
The tattooed guy's grin disappeared. He glanced at Clara and whispered, "Ms. Smith, should we let her go? What if she calls the cops?"
Clara scoffed, "Relax. My family can handle it. What are you so scared of?"
Plus, the Smiths and the Tudors are practically family. Would they really go to war over one Alice? Even if David agreed, she doubted Gavin would!
Hearing Clara's confidence, the tattooed guy's worries melted away.
Clara turned to Alice. "I'll give you a shot. Stay away from David, and I'll give you whatever you want."
"Whatever I want?" Alice laughed, "Clara, just because I'm living with David, you mess with me everywhere? Ever wonder why I'm living with him?"
"I don't care!" Clara snapped, "No matter why you're with David, you're not good enough! Sure, I like David, but I know we can't be together. Still, I won't let someone like you ruin him! You're just an illegitimate child. How could you be worthy of David? If people found out, he'd be a joke!"
"So," Alice smirked, "it's about my status?"
"That's part of it," Clara admitted. "I don't know how you weaseled your way into David's place, but you know he likes someone else, right?"
Alice's smile faded.
Clara, on the other hand, finally smiled. "Ms. Green has a great family, good character, and she's gorgeous, way better than you. She's perfect for David! If it were Ms. Green, I'd support them. David and Ms. Green have a deep bond from college, something you can't touch. You can't break into their world."
"Hold up," Esme cut in, "From what I know, David's been single for ages. The Ms. Green you're talking about is just an ex, got it?"
Clara shot Esme a glare. "They can get back together!"
Esme shrugged. "What if David doesn't want to? What if he likes Alice? Clara, David's a grown man with his own choices. Are you his mom? Planning his whole life, even his future wife?"
"I don't care! David's been spotless since he was a kid! The David I know has to be perfect! So Alice has to go! She has to leave!" Clara glared at Alice like she was the enemy.
Esme leaned in and whispered to Alice, "I think Clara's lost it. Nobody's perfect, and David's just a guy. But she treats him like a god. She's the one with issues."
After a moment, Esme looked over curiously, only to see Alice drop her bag and start taking off her coat. Esme's eyes widened. Alice said, "Fine, say what you want. I admit my status doesn't match David's. Birth is something you can't change. But to say I'm not as good as Ms. Green, that's a joke."
Clara shot back, "How is that a joke!"
Alice smirked, "First off, I'm younger than her, so even if I were to kick the bucket, she'd go first. Second, she's already an ex in David's book. He got burned by her. How do you know they'll patch things up? Lastly, in case you pass out from rage and forget, I got into Ivywood University with the top grades in the city. There's nothing I can't learn if I put my mind to it."
Her smile faded as she continued, "Including making you regret dragging all these people to find me today."
Half an hour later, police cars and ambulances lined the street. Medics were loading the injured onto stretchers for emergency care. Alice seemed to be the worst off, with a nasty, deep gash on her calf.
She sat by the roadside as a doctor worked on her leg. The wound was so deep, it was tough to stop the bleeding. The doctor, sweating bullets, looked at the pale Alice and gritted his teeth. "Miss, the wound's too deep, and the bleeding won't stop. We need to stitch it up immediately, but we don't have any anesthetic available here."
Alice got what he meant and nodded weakly. "Do it, it's fine."
The doctor quickly had a nurse grab the toolbox. The cops were grilling the tattooed guy. By the roadside, the police car door was open, and Clara's eyes were vacant, her body shaking uncontrollably.
Esme called out, "Clara."
Clara's body jerked, and she slowly looked up.
Esme, with red eyes, stared her down and said, "You're done for!"
The situation was so serious the cops had to call Clara's parents. When they found out Clara was suspected of hiring thugs to hurt someone, they couldn't believe their well-behaved daughter was involved.
Clara went with Alice to the hospital. After Alice's condition stabilized, the cops came into the ward to question her, while Clara waited on a bench outside, closely watched by an officer. Esme, as a witness, also waited outside for the questioning to end.
"What do you think David will do if I tell him about this?" Esme asked quietly.
Clara's face went white, and she suddenly turned to Esme, her face pale. "Are... are you gonna tell David? But it's not my fault! I didn't know they'd bring knives! I just wanted to scare Alice. I didn't... didn't expect this. It's not my fault!"
"If it's not your fault, then whose is it?" Esme's anger boiled over as she remembered the terrifying scene. "If it weren't for Alice, it could've been me in the ER! It could've been me, not knowing if I'd live or die! Clara, do you think you're some big shot? Just because you have ties to the Tudor Family, you think you're above everyone? Let me tell you, even if the Tudors step in this time, I won't let you off easy. I'll remember this!"
Esme quickly called her parents, asking them to hire the best lawyers around. She figured that if the Bailey Family found out, given Clara's background, they might want Alice to let it go. But Esme wouldn't!
With such a deep wound, if it weren't Alice, the scar would be on her. She might've bled out before the ambulance even got there. Why should this be swept under the rug?
Clara's actions had already crossed the line! She had to face the consequences!
