Chapter 31
Angry? Nah, not really.
Alice felt kinda wronged, but she played it up in front of him, hoping he'd put Juniper and Celeste in their place. He got the hint.
Alice wasn't exactly a powerhouse, and her weak spots were easy to exploit. She was already tiptoeing around in the Bailey Family, not wanting to deal with more crap. So, she put on a show for him. He wasn't actually mad.
Rather than feeling helpless, he felt more pity for her.
Still, he had to set things straight.
David picked up the phone and called Marcus, setting up a meet for that evening.
Maybe it was David's serious tone, so Marcus got a bit jittery. He started wondering if Alice had ticked David off again. Just to be safe, Marcus called Celeste to see if she'd been in touch with David lately.
Celeste shouted, "Dad, what are you talking about!" Celeste freaked out. "How could I be in contact with David? Do you think I can just see David whenever I want? The last time I ran into David was a total fluke. How many flukes can there be in life?"
After hearing Celeste's words, Marcus calmed down a bit and hung up, then told his secretary to clear his evening schedule.
On the other end, Celeste immediately called Juniper, sounding all panicked, "Mom! Dad just called and asked if I had been in contact with David. Does dad know something? Did that bitch Alice snitch to dad?"
"She wouldn't dare!" Juniper shot back, "Don't you know Marcus values you more than Alice? If it weren't for Lucas keeping Alice around, do you think I'd let her stay in the Bailey Family as Miss Alice, given that she's an illegitimate child? Marcus feels guilty towards me, so even if Alice complains, Marcus would have to think twice before doing anything. Since he asked you, it means he heard something from someone else. Don't worry, I'm here."
With Juniper's reassurance, Celeste finally chilled out. "Mom, I trust you."
Juniper said, "Good, my dear. You need to trust yourself. You're not any worse than Alice. She's just a bitch who can't cause any real trouble. Lucas is in a nursing home now and can't meddle in this."
David showed up late. "Sorry, got held up."
Marcus smiled, "No problem, I haven't been here long."
David had picked a pretty swanky spot, an elegant restaurant. The other diners were mostly couples or families, making it kinda weird for the two of them to be there together.
Marcus licked his lips and asked awkwardly, "David, why'd you pick this place?"
David grabbed the menu and started ordering, "Isn't this place nice?"
"No, it's just that..." Marcus said, "Two guys dining here might look a bit odd. If we need to talk, we could go somewhere more private."
David smiled and closed the menu, then politely asked the waiter to come back later.
"So, Mr. Bailey is also worried about people staring at us." David said.
Marcus's smile froze.
David set the menu aside, his smile fading, "Since Lucas left Alice in my care, I hope Mrs. Davis and Miss Bailey will stop messing with Alice, especially during her school time. They used Lucas as an excuse to call her over and humiliated her."
Marcus was stunned. "What!"
"Mr. Bailey, this is my second warning to you, and also last time. If they pull this crap a third time, I'm sorry, but I'll have to take special measures. I'm sure you don't want things to get that far, do you?"
Marcus pressed his lips tightly together, cold sweat dripping, unable to say a word.
David stood up, buttoned his suit, and looked down at Marcus. He spoke calmly, "Alice never used to come back crying when she was wronged, so you can imagine how bad it was this time. Who I live with is none of your wife's business. Mr. Bailey, I don't mind if you tell them about the engagement. I only have one request: keep them away from Alice."
