Chapter 118

Ophelia just smiled, keeping quiet.

Having said this much, these two seemed to have this unspoken bond; both kinda lonely, with no real family to care for them.

Out of nowhere, Ophelia froze and glanced at David.

David was heading towards Alice when his eyes met Ophelia's. "What's up?" he asked.

Startled, Ophelia quickly looked down and shook her head. "N-nothing."

David shrugged it off and went over to Alice, helping her up. "Time to go."

"That's it?" Alice wasn't ready to leave; she still wanted to know what would happen to the buyer and Ophelia's foster dad, Chase. Was it really gonna end with just a statement?

"What more do you want?" David chuckled, lowering his voice, "This is the police station. What do you think you can do here? Don't get any wild ideas just 'cause I'm here."

Alice rolled her eyes at him. "When trouble comes, even married couples go their separate ways."

David was caught off guard.

"Should we take down the Golden Palace first?" Alice suggested right in front of Andrew.

Andrew shot up, slamming the table. "What did you say? Take down the Golden Palace in front of me? David, is this your girlfriend? Impressive!"

The cops stood up too, yelling, "What's going on? Sit down! This is the police station. Keep causing trouble, and I'll lock you up for 48 hours!"

Andrew, fuming, sat back down, glaring at the cop. "I'll remember you."

The cop snorted, "So what if you remember? Wanna cause more trouble? Fine, make it 72 hours!"

Andrew was left speechless.

David noticed Alice seemed serious this time, raising an eyebrow. "You really wanna do that?"

Alice nodded, "Yep."

David asked, "Can you pull it off?"

Alice nudged his shoulder, laughing, "Isn't that what you're here for?"

It sounded nice, but as a businessman, David knew a bad deal when he saw one.

"Alice, let me teach you something: a businessman is a capitalist, and a capitalist is greedy. I'm a good person, but not necessarily a good businessman. So I don't do losing deals. Taking down the Golden Palace doesn't benefit me."

Alice stared him down, and David met her gaze.

Andrew, beside them, clenched his fists in rage.

David smiled. He couldn't be too obvious in the police station, but he hinted, "I'm not short on money; I'm short on warmth. If you can give me that, I'll help you take down the Golden Palace."

Alice was exasperated, "David, can you act like a man?"

David sighed, "Ever since I got a girlfriend, these things have become too complicated. I can't do it."

She thought to herself, 'A real man wouldn't say he can't do it!'

The two of them were all lovey-dovey in front of everyone, making the cops look away awkwardly. Andrew was practically grinding his teeth to dust, while Ophelia, shrinking in the corner, looked at David with a mix of longing and envy, thinking, 'How great would it be if I were the one in his arms.'

Ophelia just wanted someone to care for her, to love her, to stand up for her when things got tough, to feel sorry for her when she was hurt, instead of just scolding and berating her.

As they were about to leave, a cop called out to them. "Take this victim home too. We don't have anyone to send her now. You're her classmate, right? You take her."

The cop escorted Ophelia to the door and then went back inside.

David and Alice looked over, and Ophelia felt a bit awkward, clutching the coat she was wearing. She remembered it was Alice's and was about to take it off to return it, but then she hesitated, thinking of the clothes she had on underneath, and blushed again.

Alice noticed and said, "No rush to return it. Where do you live? We'll take you home first, and you can give it back to me tomorrow."

Ophelia nodded, bowing to David and hoarsely saying, "Thank you."

Ophelia sat in the back seat, staring out at the passing scenery. The light inside the car was dim, only occasionally lit up by streetlights.

She glanced at David in the driver's seat and then turned her head, timidly saying, "Just stop at the next corner. You don't need to take me inside; it's hard to drive in there. I can walk the rest of the way."

Ophelia lived in a cheap rental in a sketchy area. At night, there was only one streetlight, casting a ghostly white glow that made the place feel eerie and terrifying.

"Are you sure?" Alice's mind echoed with the cop's words, "You take her."

"Yes." Ophelia got out of the car, looked at the coat she was wearing, and smiled awkwardly, "Sorry, I'll wash it and return it to you. Goodbye."

Before Alice could say anything else, Ophelia had already quickly walked into the dim alley, the entrance lined with small shops, with the rental houses behind them.

Seeing Ophelia's figure disappear into the darkness, Alice finally left.

Back home, David followed Alice upstairs. Before she entered her room, he stopped and asked, "Do you still want me to help you take down the Golden Palace?"

Alice didn't respond and just closed the door.

David smiled to himself and walked back to his own room.

Later, he went into the bathroom. David's right arm rested casually on the edge of the tub, while his left hand brushed back his wet hair, revealing his forehead. He leaned back against the tub, staring at an invisible point.

He felt like his relationship with Alice was moving too slowly. Even though he tried to keep his emotions in check, every time he had to rely on tricks and schemes to get closer to her, which was pretty frustrating. Why hadn't he met her sooner?
