Chapter 108
David leaned back in his chair, stayed quiet for a few seconds, and then said, "If we're gonna be together, we gotta be honest. Suspicion and distrust will just mess things up. I don't need her to get me, but I'm down to share my thoughts with her."
Lila was taken aback.
David went on, "Yeah, she's got her quirks, but I can deal with them. She's still growing up, so I'll grow with her and we'll face the future together. She needs my care, and I need her love just as much. Lila, I'm not invincible. She's my emotional rock, my only support from now on." He hung up the phone, and the silence that followed felt like a clean cut.
David took off his Bluetooth headset and drove home. When he walked in, he saw Alice on the sofa. Her eyes flicked from his face to the shopping bag in his hand, and she lit up.
He closed the door, changed his shoes, and headed to the kitchen. He set down the ketchup and brought the rest of the stuff to Alice, placing a hand on her shoulder and giving her a kiss on the cheek. "I'll be done soon. Don't snack too much." As soon as David entered the kitchen, he shut the door behind him.
Alice knelt on the sofa, excitedly dumped out all the items from the shopping bag, and saw that David had bought the snacks she wanted yesterday but didn't get. She was thrilled.
But she didn't eat them right away, she wanted to show off, so she snapped a photo and happily sent it to Esme, who had sent her the dog leash link.
Esme had just finished class and was leaving school, wearing a backpack and listening to music with her headphones on. Her phone buzzed, and Esme stopped to check the message. Seeing the photo Alice sent, she was confused at first, then gritted her teeth. She couldn't help but kick a tree by the roadside.
'Alice,' Esme fumed internally, 'Have some self-respect! Are you really swayed by a few snacks? Come on, don't sell yourself short!'
Ever since Esme found out David's true nature, she'd been wary of him. Despite all her efforts, he still managed to get close. Frustrated, she scratched her head, pulling out a few strands of hair.
For Alice's happiness, she was almost worried bald! Meanwhile, David quickly made sandwiches, wearing a chef's jacket brought by a servant, paired with his white shirt and black trousers, looking both ridiculous and funny.
Alice glanced at him and immediately collapsed back on the sofa, covering her mouth and laughing hysterically. David calmly placed two sandwiches on the table, slowly took off the chef's jacket, and hung it on the back of a chair. Then he walked to the back of the sofa, leaning over with his hands on it and looking at Alice who was laughing so hard she was almost in tears.
"Not mad anymore?" David's gentle gaze fell on her, and he asked softly, giving her a playful pat on the butt.
Seeing the snacks, Alice's anger had long vanished. She sniffled, wiped away her tears, and sat up, her face flushed. "No, I'm not mad anymore."
David grinned. "Good to hear." They dug into the delicious sandwiches.
Halfway through, Alice suddenly remembered she forgot to take a photo, feeling a bit regretful. She had wanted to show off to Esme. Next time, she must remember!
If Esme knew what Alice was thinking now, she would be furious, wanting to grab a car and rush over to confront her! She'd worried sick about Alice's happiness, but all Alice thought about was showing off her love.
After dinner, David took a shower, changed into comfortable loungewear, and walked into Alice's room with his laptop.
Alice was walking around to aid digestion. Hearing the door open, she stopped and asked in surprise, "What are you doing here?"
David closed the door, sat on the chair by the window, opened his laptop, and lazily said, "Keeping you company through this boring afternoon."
Alice was stunned. She just stopped being angry, and now was he doing something so intimate? After half an hour, Alice returned to her computer and considerately put on her headphones. Instead of playing games, she started watching the latest episode of a TV show.
The afternoon sunlight poured into the room, and David lay back lazily, his whole body seemingly bathed in a golden glow.
Alice expressionlessly withdrew her gaze and continued watching her show. However, she didn't notice that when she turned her head, David slightly curled his lips. Confirming she couldn't see, he finally dared to openly stare at her with an intense and deep gaze.
At five o'clock, work was over. The sky was already tinged with a red sunset, and the servant was here, knocking from downstairs.
Alice, wearing headphones, didn't hear it, and David didn't notice either. After closing his laptop, he walked behind her and took off her headphones, saying, "Stop watching. Let's go downstairs for dinner."
"Just a little longer!" Alice hurriedly grabbed her headphones back. "Let me finish this episode!"
David helplessly put the headphones back on her and stood behind her to watch together. After the episode ended, Alice felt much better. Taking off her headphones, she suddenly asked, "Is it good?"
David was silent for a moment, then took her hand and led her out of the room, clearly not wanting to say more. But Alice was curious and ran ahead to hug his arm, shaking it. "Is it good?"
David frowned and said in a deep voice, "Watch out when you're going downstairs. What if you fall?"
Alice obediently shut up, but once they were downstairs, she couldn't help but ask again if the show was good.
The servant was busy in the kitchen, with the door closed, so she couldn't hear. David simply stopped, turned around, and asked her, "Given my age and status, what do you think I should watch?"
Alice stammered, "Financial news? Weather forecast?"
