Chapter 72

Alice shook her head, determined. "Nope, I'll eat whatever you make! Seriously, anything you give me, I'll eat it!"

David raised an eyebrow. "Oh really? You sure you can eat anything?"

Garrett, who was nearby, lowered his head, thinking that sounded a bit off.

Alice bit her lip, hesitating for a moment.

David gently ruffled her hair, sat by the bed, and leaned in closer, still holding his phone. It wasn't overly intimate, but it was definitely close. "Be sweet, don't make me mad, okay?"

Alice nodded, but her face showed she wasn't too thrilled about it.

Around noon, Esme rushed in from school. As soon as she opened the door, she saw David and Alice sitting side by side, playing a mobile game. To her surprise, they were arguing.

Alice complained, "You were supposed to save me! Why didn't you?"

David replied calmly, "If I save you, we both die. If I don't, at least one of us survives."

Alice glared at the screen and retorted, "You're just too cautious. If you took a risk, we might have killed them both! One of them had low health, and the other was at half, and you just let them go!"

A simple game turned into a debate. At a critical moment, Esme stepped in.

"Alice, I missed you so much!" Esme dropped her bag and opened her arms, rushing towards Alice.

Alice was stunned, and David had already put down his phone, stood up, and his tall figure blocked Esme from reaching the bed, making her stop in her tracks.

Esme pouted and walked to the foot of the bed, placing the soup on the table. "Alice, my mom made this soup. It's super delicious!" As the lid was lifted, the aroma wafted out, making Alice's stomach growl.

Alice looked at David and poked his waist with her small hand, indicating she was hungry.

David turned his head and met her pleading eyes.

Alice smiled sheepishly. "I'm hungry."

David's lips curved slightly. "Garrett went to get some oatmeal, just wait a bit."

Alice was a bit annoyed; there was delicious soup right in front of her, but she wasn't allowed to eat it! Esme was also annoyed. It wasn't some gourmet dish, so why not let Alice eat it?

Just as Esme was about to speak up, David spoke first, "You can eat it, but there's a condition."

Alice asked, "What condition?"

David glanced at Esme, recalling how she had once questioned his feelings for Alice, and he smirked inwardly. "Call me 'Baby,' gently, and I'll let you taste it."

Esme was stunned. Was this still the usually serious, aloof, and mysterious David? If it weren't for his handsome face, his words just now could be considered as sexual harassment!

Alice also realized this, her face turning red with embarrassment. She glanced at Esme and then at David, hoping her gaze could move him.

David just smiled lightly. "If you don't call me that, then obediently drink the oatmeal."

Alice was about to cry. She hugged David's arm, resting her forehead on his shoulder, and called out pitifully, "Baby, I'm hungry."

Esme stared at David, her face blank. Alice might not have noticed, but Esme definitely caught David's sneaky little smile when he heard "Baby." She got the message loud and clear. To David, Alice was just a sideshow.

The perfect image she had of David shattered, and she squinted at him, feeling a bit sorry for clueless Alice. But seriously, if he liked Alice, why not just be straight with her? Wouldn't it be better if they both knew how they felt? Instead, he was playing games, making Alice call him "Baby."

Esme looked at David with disdain. At that moment, David seemed to sense her gaze and looked up.

Esme was startled. Then, he gave a polite smile, but to Esme, it was full of provocation and smugness.

Esme's face turned red with anger, and she clenched her fists, holding back the urge to punch David. He was just a sneaky wolf!

Alice finally got to eat something tasty other than the boring oatmeal on her second day in the hospital.

"Eat slowly, I'll go have a word with Esme." David stood up and turned his gaze to Esme.

Esme gritted her teeth and followed him out of the room. As soon as the door closed, she couldn't hold back her anger and said, "I really can't figure you out, David. So, this is the real you!"

As she confronted him, the memories of his seemingly sincere words and actions flashed through her mind. She realized it was just a facade. The real David was a calculating wolf! He was cunning and strategic, skilled in playing hard-to-get, and poor Alice was completely captivated by him!

David didn't deny her assessment. This was his true nature. After being deeply hurt, he learned to hide it. But no matter how much he concealed, his true self was hard to erase.

Maybe his past relationship made him cautious. This time, he wanted to make sure Alice was 100% committed to him before he gave her the same level of affection. Although it was unfair to Alice, he didn't want to taste that bitterness again.

David said, "Esme, I can see you genuinely care for Alice. If you really want what's best for her, you should understand boundaries and know what to say and what not to say."

Esme's eyes widened in disbelief. "I know the difference! I'm just afraid that as you get older, you'll lose your courage and spirit of adventure. If you back out when things get tough, can you afford to compensate Alice?"

Time was priceless. Once it was gone, no amount of money could bring it back. If David really backed out as Esme feared, no one could compensate Alice for the precious years she spent on him.

David just smiled. "Esme, you're still young, you might not understand love. Love isn't about one-sided initiative. Alice likes me, but has she ever taken the initiative?"
