Chapter 127
Alice sighed and said, "I ran into Lila."
"What?" Esme practically jumped out of her seat, eyes wide. "Lila? What's she doing here? This world is way too small! Last time we saw her at dinner, and now she's here while we're studying? We're seriously unlucky!"
Lila's words were still ringing in Alice's ears, making her feel irritated and annoyed.
She couldn't wrap her head around why an ex-girlfriend would flaunt herself and try to challenge her position.
"Unbelievable," Esme said after hearing Alice's story. She thought, 'Where does Lila get the nerve to think David would leave Alice for her?'
If David still had feelings for Lila, he wouldn't be with Alice! Even though Esme didn't like David much, she knew he was a man of principles and wouldn't fall for two people at the same time.
Esme sat back down, took a bite of her food, and mumbled, "What exactly did Lila say to you? Did she challenge you? Or try to fight you in the bathroom? I should've gone with you! With two of us, she wouldn't dare do anything!"
"You're overthinking it. She wouldn't lay a hand on me," Alice said. "Lila just said stuff about her and David to make me jealous, hoping I'd go confront David. That way, David might get fed up with me and break up, and she could swoop back in."
Alice had to admit, Lila was pretty scheming.
"I never liked Lila, but others in our circle speak highly of her," Esme said, losing her appetite. She pulled out a couple of napkins to wipe her mouth and said seriously, "She was helpful in college; she was rich but not arrogant, so she was quite popular among the girls."
Esme pointed to herself disdainfully and said, "But that definitely doesn't include me! I'm not like Clara who blindly worships people."
Esme propped her chin with one hand and pointed around with the other. "The rich people's circle is weird; they like to rank people. For example, because my family runs a business and collaborates with many corporations, I'm considered 'upper-class.'"
"Then take Alice, for instance," Esme sighed. "She's the second daughter of the Bailey family, but not the daughter of the first wife, so in their eyes, she's lower class. Illegitimate children are looked down upon in this circle."
Nathan looked confused. "Why look down on people?"
Esme gently patted Nathan's shoulder with a sarcastic smile. "That's just one of the weird quirks in the rich people's circle; they like to rank people as if it shows how great they are. Anyway, I really hate these rules and can't be bothered to get involved."
After saying this, Esme paused to think, then added, "It seems that James isn't too bad. At least he doesn't have these messy thoughts; he's just a playful guy."
Alice glanced at Esme and said, "Are you actually complimenting him?"
Esme grinned, "Consider it a reluctant thumbs-up, nothing special. He still doesn't meet my standards."
After dinner, Esme and Alice hit the arcade until seven, then headed home separately.
David didn't get back until around eight-thirty. As soon as he walked in, he saw the living room light still on. Alice was sitting cross-legged on the carpet, textbooks spread out on the table, her chin resting on the table, spinning a pen.
Hearing the door, Alice looked up and smiled at David. "You're back."
David smiled back as he changed his shoes. Seeing Alice made a lot of his day's stress melt away.
He walked over, squatted down, kissed her cheek, and asked, "I'm back; why aren't you studying in the room?"
"Waiting for you," Alice said, putting down the pen and throwing herself into David's arms. "Are you hungry?"
He almost said he wasn't, but decided against it.
David hugged Alice, patted her back, and softly asked, "What about you? Do you want to eat something?"
Alice rolled her eyes, a bit annoyed. "Can't you just say you're hungry? How am I supposed to respond to that?"
"Okay, okay," David said with a helpless smile. "I'm hungry. So, what did you make for me?"
Alice got up and ran to the kitchen, coming back a few minutes later with a bowl of soup. She placed it on the table.
"The servant taught me how to make this soup over the phone," Alice said. "It's my first attempt, so I hope Mr. Tudor won't be too harsh."
David smelled the aroma, a bit surprised.
"First time?" he asked.
"Yep," Alice replied.
As David took a sip of the soup, Alice watched his expression closely, her heart racing, waiting for his verdict.
She thought it tasted okay, but everyone's taste was different; she didn't know if he would like it.
"Dear," David called.
Alice, who was on edge, didn't immediately react to the change in address, her mind full of negative thoughts.
David looked at the nervous Alice and smiled slightly, kissing the corner of her mouth.
"Why don't you try it yourself; how is it?" David said, slowly drinking the soup. "I think it tastes great; you have the potential to be a good wife and mother, and I'm very pleased."
After a moment of silence, Alice moved closer to David, tilting her head to listen more clearly. "What did you just call me? I didn't hear; say it again."
David put down the bowl, leaned close to her ear, almost touching her skin, his warm breath making her ears turn red.
"Dear, are you losing your hearing at such a young age? That's not good. I was hoping you'd be my ears when we get old," David teased.
