Chapter 68
After hanging up with Esme, Isla slammed the phone down and lashed out Calliope. The cops watching the whole thing just squinted and moved away to jot down some notes.
Esme took a deep breath and got up to get checked out. But as she turned, she froze, totally speechless when she saw who was coming her way.
'What the heck? How is he here? Oh no, Alice!' Without thinking, Esme spun around and bolted, but David caught her after just a few steps.
David's face was ice-cold as he demanded, "Where is she?"
Esme, struggling to break free from his iron grip, shot back with a cold smile, "You've got some nerve asking where she is. If it weren't for your messy feelings and indecision, Alice wouldn't be in the hospital right now!"
"Where is she!" David growled, tightening his grip, making Esme wince in pain.
"Now you pretend to care? Where were you when it mattered? I warned you so many times, either cut Clara off completely or be with Alice, but you kept wavering. Is this a joke to you? Clara keeps insulting Alice because of your wishy-washy attitude, even comparing her to your ex!"
Esme angrily shoved David, trying to put some distance between them.
David ignored her and went straight to the nurse to ask about Alice's room.
As the anesthesia wore off, Alice felt the pain creeping in. She lay in bed, sighing deeply, worried about the scars and how to keep the truth hidden. Her mind was a mess, and the pain kept her from sleeping. 'Why did it have to come to this?' she thought, frustration bubbling up inside her.
The door creaked open, and Alice, thinking it was Esme, hesitated. But when she saw David storm in, she was speechless, her eyes wide, unable to say a word.
David couldn't see the wound, but from Alice's pale face and her foot wrapped in layers of bandages, he could tell it was bad.
Alice, stunned, propped herself up with her arm, caught in a dilemma, facing David.
David looked down at her, his voice rough. "Something this big happens, and you don't tell me right away? Were you planning to keep it a secret until you got better?"
If it weren't for the police call, it seemed Alice intended to keep it a secret until she recovered. Truly understanding the feeling of being "terrified," Alice swallowed and replied, "I was afraid of your reaction like this, so I didn't dare to say."
"You can do it but not talk about it, huh?" David chuckled, "Impressive, you're getting bolder and more outrageous."
Alice didn't dare to look up; just hearing his voice, she knew David was extremely angry.
David had locked the door as soon as he entered, leaving Esme fuming outside. Now, Esme was knocking insistently, her voice filled with concern. "David, let me in. We need to talk about this."
David ignored her, his focus solely on Alice. After a few minutes of tense silence, he finally sighed, sat on the edge of the bed, and asked her to lie down and talk.
David said, "I'll ask the doctor about the situation, but before that, I want you to tell me everything honestly, no hiding. I'll make my own judgment."
Alice pulled the blanket down just enough to reveal her chin, staring at David but staying silent.
David was on the verge of losing it. He could easily find out what happened, but he stubbornly wanted Alice to tell him herself.
David remembered what Esme had said about Clara comparing Alice to Lila. His gaze fell on Alice. She pulled her chin back under the blanket and muttered, "My leg hurts, I don't want to talk."
David looked at her intently. "Your leg hurts?"
Alice nodded. "Yeah."
David said, "I'll call the doctor."
The doctor came in and gave Alice some painkillers. David took off his coat, placed it on the bed, and followed the doctor into the hallway to get the details about Alice's condition.
He found out her leg injury was pretty bad, with a lot of blood loss. They couldn't stop the bleeding, so they had to stitch her up urgently without anesthesia, and then re-stitch her once she got to the hospital. David couldn't even imagine how painful that must have been.
He asked, "Will it leave a scar?"
The doctor nodded. "Such a deep wound will definitely leave a scar unless you want to remove it."
"No need," David interrupted, his face cold, "Let it stay, so she can remember her recklessness every time she sees the scar."
The doctor thought, 'What a heartless guardian.'
Seeing the doctor's hesitant expression, David knew he had more to say but chose to ignore it. Instead, he continued to ask about precautions, like dietary restrictions and other details.
After memorizing everything, David went back to the room.
The painkillers had started to kick in, easing Alice's pain, but she still couldn't sleep. Her anxiety only slightly eased when David walked in.
"The doctor said your injury," David said, sitting beside Alice, "requires a strict diet during recovery. I'll arrange for someone to bring you light food."
Alice's heart tightened. It was a relief that David didn't directly blame her, and he was even thoughtful enough to prepare food. She could only nod obediently.
"I need to go to the police station. Esme will stay with you, and I'll come back as soon as I can," David said, giving Alice a complicated look and sighing, "I originally planned to take you home for dinner tonight. Mr. Bailey is hosting a banquet at the Tudor Mansion on his first day out of the hospital."
"What?" Alice sat up abruptly, "Lucas is at the Tudor Mansion? I..." Her eyes darted to her bandaged leg, then back to David's, tears welling up.
"Do you know you were wrong?" Seeing Alice's red-rimmed eyes, David didn't offer comfort but asked in a cold tone.
