Chapter 22
After she spoke, Esme let out a shy giggle.
Alice just felt kinda helpless.
Like, she was the one getting teased, so why was Esme the one blushing first?
"But I've never met James," Alice said. She'd heard James was a wild one, even more so than her and Simon. James also hated being controlled, so he lived on his own.
"Hey, it's not hard to meet him," Esme said with a grin. "Just hit up any bar, nightclub, or disco, and there's a good chance you'll bump into James. If you wanna meet him, I can ask around and see where he's heading tonight. We can check it out."
Alice thought for a sec and then reluctantly nodded.
But first, she had to figure out how to ditch the driver.
After school, the driver's car was already parked under a tree at the university gate. Alice, holding onto Esme's arm, walked over and knocked on the window.
The driver was busy texting his boss. When he looked up and saw Alice, he quickly unbuckled his seatbelt and got out to open the door for her.
"I'm crashing at my bestie's place tonight," Alice said, pointing to Esme.
Esme's mouth twitched. They'd just met yesterday, and now they were skipping the friend stage and going straight to besties. She really admired Alice's ability to lie.
"Yeah," Esme nodded. "Could you let Alice's parents know? It's just for one night, just one night!"
The driver looked a bit troubled and turned to Alice. "Miss Bailey, may I call Mr. Tudor to confirm?"
Alice nodded.
Hearing this, Esme leaned in close to Alice's ear and whispered, "Mr. Tudor is..."
"David Tudor," Alice replied.
Esme's eyes widened, and she was speechless for a moment.
"David?" Esme almost choked on her own spit. She grabbed Alice's arm and pulled her aside. "What's your deal with David? Why does your driver need his permission for your outings?"
Alice smiled sincerely. "He's my fiancé."
"Come on," Esme rolled her eyes. "Not to diss you, but usually, in rich families, especially those with a military background like the Tudors, they wouldn't... You know what I mean, right? If there were to be a marriage alliance, it should be with someone like Celeste."
Alice pouted.
"Oh, I'm not mocking you." Esme pinched Alice's cheek and found it quite soft, so she pinched it again. After getting a warning look from Alice, she awkwardly withdrew her hand and continued, "So, be real, what's your relationship with David?"
"He's my temporary guardian," Alice sighed. Now, even telling the truth, no one believed her.
"Guardian?"
Before Esme could ask more, the driver came over with the phone. "Uh, Miss, Mr. Tudor would like to speak with you."
Esme pointed to herself in surprise.
Was it her? David actually wanted to talk to her!
Alice was also surprised, with a hint of jealousy in her heart.
Had David changed his mind? Why wasn't he calling her to remind her to come home early or not cause trouble?
Esme took the phone and walked away from Alice, then put it to her ear.
David's voice was deep, and to Esme, it sounded incredibly sexy!
Her heart started racing uncontrollably. Esme covered her flushed face and repeatedly assured, "Mr. Tudor, don't worry. Alice will be treated like a VIP at my house! With me around, no one will dare disrespect her, not even my parents!"
David's laughter came through, and Esme felt like she might die from her heart beating too fast.
"Alice is quite mischievous and loves to cause trouble. I hope you can take good care of her, Miss Esme," David said.
"No problem at all!"
The call lasted two or three minutes, and Esme returned with a red face, handed the phone back to the driver, and linked arms with Alice as they left the school.
After walking for a while, Alice shook off Esme's hand and squinted at her flushed face, maliciously pinching her cheek hard.
"Ouch!" Esme immediately covered her face and glared at Alice. "What are you doing!"
"What did he say to you?" Alice asked, noticing Esme was still blushing.
Esme's heart fluttered again at the mention of David's voice.
"He asked me to take good care of you because you're mischievous and love to cause trouble," Esme replied.
Alice's face was expressionless. "I'm not as bad as he said."
"Alright, don't forget our main task tonight."
