Chapter 145
Caleb never expected that on such a special day, Marcus would deliver such a heavy blow. Whether it was a public revelation or a private conversation, Marcus's meaning was crystal clear: the engagement was absolutely out of the question!
He understood that Marcus had planned everything meticulously. Since Alice was not his daughter, this marriage was of no benefit to the Bailey family. So, before the banquet began, Marcus revealed the truth in advance, attempting to make the Tudor family consider their reputation and accept his proposal. After all, who would want to marry someone with an unknown background?
Anger caused a dull pain in Caleb's chest. "Mr. Bailey, you can see how much David cares about Alice, and our whole family is very fond of her. Even if we don't announce the engagement today, do you think the agreement will be invalid?" he questioned Marcus.
"Well..." Marcus stammered.
Of course not! His daughter Ophelia did exist, but she had been mistakenly switched. Once all misunderstandings were cleared up, the engagement would still be valid!
Seeing Marcus's hesitation, Caleb couldn't help but sneer, "Being too greedy will eventually backfire. To me, only Alice is worthy of being David's wife, and no paternity test result will change that."
Not to be outdone, Marcus retorted, "Mr. Tudor, watch your words. The name 'Alice' originally belonged to my biological daughter. The girl now called 'Ophelia' is the real Alice."
Hearing this, Caleb was utterly shocked. Although the Alice Marcus had raised for years had no blood relation, there should be some emotional bond, right? How could he be so heartless?
Downstairs, Seraphina, who had been busy all morning, was eagerly waiting for Alice to become a member of the family. She was completely unaware of the dispute upstairs and was only wondering why Gavin had not yet arrived. A phone call revealed that he was delayed due to traffic.
Helpless, she sent David to call everyone downstairs. David reminded Alice to rest for a while and then went with Felix to greet the guests. Left sitting in a chair, Alice was feeling uncomfortable because her new shoes didn't fit well.
At this moment, a few friends came over to check on her. Simon searched all over but didn't have any band-aids; Nathan joked that bringing such things to this kind of event was pathological. Esme offered to help find some, and Ophelia greeted Alice as she took a glass of wine.
Meanwhile, Celeste approached them with a victorious smile, saying she had something private to discuss. Curious yet cautious, Alice directly refused to leave the scene. "Say what you have to say here; I have nothing to hide from everyone."
Hearing this, Celeste's expression darkened slightly. "Alice, I once gave you a chance to explain. Since you didn't appreciate it, I have nothing to worry about now!" Her gaze lingered on Ophelia for a few seconds, and seeing Ophelia's nervous expression, she felt even more triumphant.
The atmosphere instantly became subtle and tense.
