Chapter 151
"Alice, what about her?" Lila blurted out in a moment of panic.
Ophelia looked up at her, and Lila realized she was being a bit too anxious. She smiled and explained, "Ophelia, don't overthink it. Now that we've figured out who the real Bailey family daughter is and who the fake one is, no family would want to keep Alice. It's just that this came so suddenly, they need time to adjust. Please be understanding."
Ophelia understood that people needed time to adjust. But what about her? Who had ever cared about her feelings? When she found out the truth, who gave her time to accept it? To return to her family, even though she felt guilty towards Alice, she still did it. But in the end, everyone else became innocent, and she alone became the sinner.
"Alright." Seeing Ophelia remain silent, Lila got up and sat next to her, patting her shoulder to comfort her. "Don't take this too much to heart. You can stay with me for now. The school is on break, and now that you're the Bailey family daughter, you won't lack money, so you don't need to work. I'll explain everything to Mr. Bailey, so don't worry."
Although she was reluctant to send this fool Ophelia back to the Bailey family, it was better than letting Alice continue to be the Bailey family daughter. Without that identity, Alice was nothing and wouldn't even have the right to stay by David's side!
"Okay." Ophelia nodded in agreement.
The next morning, when Alice got up, Lucas was already downstairs having breakfast with Gavin.
Gavin, holding a bowl of porridge, turned and asked, "Are you going back to the Bailey family later?"
"Of course, that's my home. Why wouldn't I go back?"
Gavin responded with an "oh" and thought for a moment before asking, "What if Alice asks questions? What should I say?"
The Bailey family was a dangerous place now. Even if Marcus had some conscience left, who could guarantee that Juniper would be kind to Lucas? Juniper had always been scheming, trying to take all of Alice's good things for Celeste back then. With Juniper being such a shrew, could Lucas return safely?
"Forget it." Thinking of this, Gavin put down his bowl and picked up his phone. "To be safe, I'll arrange for some strong bodyguards to go with you. Using soldiers would be too conspicuous and might make the news, but bodyguards are different. If anyone dares to harm you, I'll deal with them!"
Lucas didn't stop Gavin and let him prepare a group of strong bodyguards.
After breakfast, Lucas took his medication and rested for a while. Once the bodyguards arrived, the nurse pushed him back to the Bailey family.
At the Bailey family, Marcus had been waiting for Lucas. He decided not to go to the company today and didn't want to be disturbed unless it was something important.
Around ten in the morning, the sound of a car came from the entrance, and Marcus quickly ran out to see. The nurse took a wheelchair out of the trunk, and then a burly bodyguard wearing sunglasses got out of the passenger seat, opened the rear door, and carefully placed Lucas in the wheelchair.
Seeing this, Marcus's face turned ashen.
"Dad, this is home, not a debt collection!" Juniper mocked sarcastically.
Lucas ignored Juniper. Several bodyguards stepped forward and pushed Marcus and Juniper, who were blocking the door, almost causing them to fall.
Juniper was furious and loudly questioned, "Dad! This is our family matter. Why did you bring these outsiders in? Are you afraid your family will harm you?"
"Ms. Davis, do you consider yourself part of the Bailey family?" The nurse looked at her coldly. "Everyone knows Mr. Bailey is your elder. Those who don't know might think Mr. Bailey owes you a huge debt, given how disrespectfully you speak. Don't you know Mr. Bailey is in poor health? Are you trying to anger him to death?"
"Who do you think you are..." Juniper's words were cut off as a fierce-looking bodyguard stood in front of her.
Juniper was so scared that her remaining words got stuck in her throat, her face turning pale and then red.
"Enough!" Marcus glared at her. "Haven't you caused enough trouble?"
Juniper swallowed her words, glared at the bodyguard, and walked over to sit on the couch.
The nurse pushed Lucas to the table, and the bodyguards stood against the wall, giving them enough space. Juniper looked at these outsiders and complained, "Dad, what are they doing inside? Let them wait outside. We're discussing family matters. What are they doing here?"
"As long as you act with integrity and have nothing to hide, there's no need to fear others listening. They are trustworthy people, and it's fine for them to hear. Besides, after the commotion yesterday, what secrets does the Bailey family have left?" Lucas smiled at Juniper. "You didn't care about discretion yesterday, but today you do? Who are you trying to impress?"
Juniper's face darkened.
"Dad, I thought about it all night and didn't have anyone investigate. I was just waiting to hear your explanation." Marcus clasped his hands together. "I know the foolish things I did when I was young hurt you, but ever since you brought Alice back, I've been trying my best to be a good father. It's just that the company matters are overwhelming, and I'm really struggling. But that doesn't mean I don't love Alice! So why isn't she my daughter in the end? Why?"
Lucas leaned back in his wheelchair and slowly began, "I told you before, she is the granddaughter of my comrade. That comrade once saved my and Gavin's lives. We had been abandoned, and he risked his life to bring us back. Do you think this debt should be repaid?"
Marcus moved his lips, "It should."
"We owed him our lives. When he was dying, he entrusted Alice to me. Do you think I should have adopted Alice?"
Marcus didn't answer.
"You think what I did was too much, but I didn't completely block Ophelia's path. I gave her a new life. If there's any misfortune in her fate, it's because she had such adoptive parents. Could I control that? Or do you think leaving Ophelia with Saskia was a good thing?"
Lucas laughed, "Since this matter was exposed, you never cared about them, but I always kept an eye on them. After you abandoned Saskia, she became a bar singer. Do you know what she did to survive? I didn't want Ophelia, an innocent child, to die at the hands of a drug-addicted Saskia, so I gave Saskia some money and sent Ophelia to an orphanage. Did I do wrong?"
"I gave her a new life and, through her identity, brought my comrade's granddaughter Alice home to raise. Do you think this is something a beast would do?"
"Marcus, I've already solved your problem. Think about it, which of my actions violated morality, and which one crossed the line?"
