Chapter 141
James turned his back to Lila and rolled his eyes. How dare she bring up the past? Back then, he was only polite to her out of respect for David. Ever since David's accident, Lila had been on his blacklist. He hadn't gone out of his way to make her life difficult, which was already a favor. And now she had the nerve to talk about old times?
Lila gently patted Ophelia's shoulder and led her to James.
Hearing the approaching footsteps, James's face instantly showed impatience. He turned to glance at Lila and said coldly, "What's up? Even if you have something to say, don't come to me. I'm busy."
Lila was unfazed by James's attitude. Instead, she pulled Ophelia forward, ignoring James's displeasure, and introduced with a smile, "James, let me introduce you to Ophelia. She's also a student at Ivywood University, the same school as Alice."
Both Ophelia and James were taken aback by this.
Ophelia didn't understand why Lila was doing this, while James sneered and mocked, "Lila, what are you up to? Are you trying to set me up on a date? Do you even have the right? Don't forget, you were David's girlfriend. I was polite to you for David's sake, but things are different now. David has a girlfriend named Alice, and they're engaged! Do you know what engagement means? If you have any self-awareness, don't think about ruining their happiness!"
After saying this, James glared at Lila, spat on the ground, and turned to leave.
Lila's face turned pale, her lips trembled, and tears welled up in her eyes. She almost lost her balance. Ophelia quickly supported her and asked with concern, "Lila, are you okay?"
Seeing Lila's pale and weak appearance, Ophelia felt conflicted. This man named James was nothing like the gentle David! How could such an excellent man like David have a brother like James? And he dared to publicly humiliate Lila! What surprised her even more was that Lila was David's ex-girlfriend.
Ophelia felt very conflicted for a moment, but she tried to calm down and asked Lila, "Lila, what did you mean by what you said earlier? Alice? Is she involved too? But you said you were helping me investigate my past."
Lila nodded and replied firmly, "This isn't the place to discuss this. Let's get in the car, and I'll explain everything when we get to my place."
In the hotel room, Ophelia sat nervously on the sofa, waiting, while Lila changed into casual clothes and came out of the kitchen with two glasses of water, handing one to Ophelia.
"Have something to drink first. I'll go get the documents." When Lila returned, the drinks on the table were untouched.
Ophelia couldn't wait to know the truth and hurriedly grabbed the file from Lila's hand, quickly opening it to check.
As Ophelia's expression gradually turned to surprise and even anger, Lila sighed softly and patted Ophelia's arm reassuringly. "This is all the information I found. I also visited the orphanage and spoke to the family that adopted you. They admitted that they received a monthly payment, which was likely sent by your biological grandfather."
"How could he do this!" Ophelia stood up abruptly, scattering the documents on the floor, her eyes red with tears as she choked out, "Why were they so unfair to me? Just because I'm a girl? But that doesn't make sense, Alice is also a girl! Or is it because I was born out of wedlock, so he felt ashamed?"
But she couldn't understand. If it was gender bias, why did they later accept Alice, who was also a girl, back into the family? If the issue was her background, why did they continue to financially support her adoptive parents after she was adopted?
Tears streamed down Ophelia's face. Could it be that all of this was because of Alice? Alice had taken away the happiness that should have been hers, including becoming David's future wife?
As if all her strength had been drained, Ophelia collapsed into her seat, staring blankly at the scattered documents on the floor. After a long silence, she finally gathered her thoughts and looked at Lila, pointing to herself and asking softly, "So, I'm actually the real Alice, and she's the imposter Ophelia?"
After receiving a confirming nod, Ophelia smiled. She was the true daughter of the Bailey family, the real fiancée of David!
Sensing Ophelia's emotional shift, Lila squeezed her shoulder reassuringly and said, "Don't worry, now that you know the truth, I will help you make sure everyone knows. I believe Lucas from the Bailey family will be willing to restore your identity! As for the current Alice, she's grown up now and can support herself through her own efforts. We're just correcting a past mistake; we're not doing anything wrong."
"Is this true?" Ophelia immediately grabbed her hand, hope shining in her eyes. "So, I can return to my family, but what will happen to the current Alice?"
"Don't worry," Lila said seriously, "we're just correcting a wrong choice. You deserve the happiness that was meant for you. The one who truly owes you is her, because you lost your family and status, which should have been yours. Now, we need to restore your rightful place."
