Chapter 95
Gavin hadn't been this pumped in years. He actually called the restaurant himself to book a table and even sent a car to pick up Lucas for the big celebration.
On the way there, Seraphina couldn't hold it in any longer and asked, "Gavin, should we let Marcus know? I mean, Alice is joining our family. It feels wrong not to tell them."
Gavin really didn't want to invite them. Marcus's family was trouble, and he didn't want them messing up the night. But Seraphina didn't get it, so she asked again, "Gavin?"
Gavin waved her off, annoyed. "Fine, tell them. But today is important. They better behave, or they'll regret it!"
"Got it." Seraphina had Caleb make the call and explain everything.
When Marcus heard about David and Alice, he was so shocked he just stood there, stunned. By the time he snapped out of it and wanted to ask more, the call was already over.
Marcus didn't care about the abrupt end. He was thrilled and immediately told his company to take the day off and rushed home.
Seeing Marcus in such a hurry, Juniper put down her coffee and followed him. "What's going on, honey?"
Marcus, changing clothes in the bedroom, urged, "You need to dress up too. Where's Celeste? Tell her to come home now! Gavin invited us for dinner. It's a big celebration for both families!"
"A celebration?" Juniper frowned, feeling uneasy. "Could it be..."
Marcus glanced at her, his smile fading. "Yeah, just like you think. Gavin invited the whole family. You and Celeste better watch what you say. Don't piss off Gavin, or we're all in trouble!"
Juniper's face darkened, and she was a bit resentful. "Sure, your precious daughter found a rich family to marry into, so you're happy. But what about me? You want Celeste to watch Alice and David be all lovey-dovey? Don't you know Celeste likes David?"
"So what if she does!" Marcus snapped back. "Can you make him like her too? I wanted Celeste to connect with the Tudor Family, but Lucas chose Alice. What can I do? Defy him? Do you think I have a say?"
Juniper went pale and stayed quiet.
Marcus put on a new tie and said coldly, "Go if you want. Stay home if you don't!"
Juniper huffed, "At least give me some time to get ready!" She quickly called Celeste, urging her to come home immediately.
When Celeste heard the news, she was like a deer in headlights, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Mom," she choked out, "How can this be? She always takes my stuff, and now she's taken him too, and she's rubbing it in! And Dad's helping her!"
What could Juniper say? What could they do now? If it was just a crush, maybe she could do something, but David liked Alice too. She was truly helpless!
"Forget it," Juniper tried to comfort her. "There are plenty of good guys out there, way better than David. We'll find someone even better! I'll help you find a guy a thousand times better than David!"
Celeste cried harder. She didn't want someone better; she wanted David! David should have been hers... If it weren't for Alice, if it weren't for Lucas. A look of resentment flashed in her eyes. She suddenly screamed, "Why hasn't Lucas died yet! Why isn't he dead!"
Juniper looked at her in shock, unable to react before Marcus's furious voice cut through the air. "Celeste! What nonsense are you talking about!" His eyes were wide with anger.
Celeste, frightened, hid behind Juniper, who stood in front. Juniper said, "Alright, stop it. The Tudor Family is still waiting for us. Celeste and I will go change clothes. You go ahead, send me the address later, and we'll join you as soon as possible. We can't let others think we're too arrogant."
Marcus gave Celeste a cold look, adjusted his suit, and went downstairs without a word. It wasn't until the sound of the car starting faded away that Celeste's tense heart slowly relaxed.
Juniper sternly pulled Celeste aside. "Do you know what you just said? If you say it again, I won't help you anymore!"
"Mom, I was too angry. I didn't mean it." Celeste knew she still needed Juniper's help to solve the problem, especially to deal with Marcus. "I'm sorry. I know I was wrong. I'll go change clothes."
Juniper's expression was severe. "Once we're there, unless they talk to you first, keep your mouth shut. We'll come back right after dinner. No matter how dissatisfied you are, as long as it's not directed at the Tudor Family, you can do whatever you want."
Inside the restaurant, upon learning that Lucas was about to arrive, Alice was as excited as a little girl who had gotten a new toy. She didn't leave the door for a moment, occasionally standing on tiptoe to look out, full of anticipation for Lucas. If she had a tail, it would be wagging furiously.
James, with his legs crossed and one hand on the back of the chair, watched Alice's behavior. She was so well-behaved that it was unbelievable. If he hadn't seen her fiery temper with his own eyes, he would almost believe this was her true nature. "David, do you really like her?" he pointed at Alice and asked David beside him, "What's so good about her?"
David asked in return, "What's wrong with her?"
James immediately sat up straight and started counting on his fingers. "She has a bad temper, comes up with lots of bad ideas, often causes trouble, even got into the police station, pretends to be an adult and gets drunk at a young age, not to mention her drunken antics and skipping classes. I don't see what's good about her."
David gave him a deep look.
James met his gaze, as if challenging David's judgment.
After a moment of silence, James asked expressionlessly, "David, do you think this makes sense?"
David smiled faintly. "All those things you mentioned, don't you have the same?"
He then added leisurely, "Have you ever seen me dislike you?"
