Chapter 24

Esme wasn't dumb like Clara. Clara went after Alice 'cause of David. Now, when James heard Alice's name, he switched from a player to a doting brother, even planning to take Alice home later. Anyone with half a brain could see Alice had some special connection with the Tudor Family.

Alice whipped out her phone and scanned the QR code on the menu, finding out it was the bar's ordering app. While ordering, she replied to Esme, "It's exactly what it sounds like. Due to some special circumstances, David's temporarily my guardian. I'm under his care."

"Jealous." Esme was green with envy that Alice got to hear David's voice every day.

"Jealous of what?" Alice asked, puzzled.

Esme propped her chin on her hands, her eyes dreamy, "Jealous that you get to see David's body and hear him wake you up every day. Waking up to a hottie every morning, life would be perfect."

Alice remembered the tone David used to wake her up before. If she woke up to David's face every morning, she'd probably have a heart attack.

A few seconds later, she looked down and swiped her phone screen, pretending she hadn't just thought about that.

By 11 p.m., James saw it was time, grabbed his jacket, and walked over to Alice. He habitually placed his hand beside her head, leaned down, and said, "Baby, we should go home."

Alice's face stiffened, and she slowly looked up. "Do you want to die?"

James cursed under his breath!

With James taking Alice home, Esme could chill.

James drove a blue sports car. Since Alice was in the car, he drove way slower than usual. Even when other cars zoomed past them, Alice could feel James's growing irritation, his grip on the steering wheel tightening.

"If you wanna drive fast, just go ahead," Alice said.

James forced a smile and said, "I'm just afraid of scaring you. What if you get scared and go home to snitch on me?"

Alice's mouth twitched. "You're overthinking it. Drive how you like."

James glanced at Alice, seeing she wasn't joking. "Then I'll go for it?"

"Yeah." Alice nodded.

When the light turned green, James floored it. The sports car roared and shot down the bustling city streets, overtaking car after car.

"Wow! This is the speed I should be driving at!"

Alice felt awkward, thinking he was a bit nuts.

With the windows down, the wind blew in, messing up her hair, making her squint, and the scenery outside became a blur due to the speed.

"So exhilarating," she murmured.

As a result, they got pulled over by the cops and were taken straight to the station.

James had caused all kinds of trouble before and didn't care at all.

But Alice was different.

The moment she stepped into the police station, she knew she was done for.

She had promised David not to get into trouble for a week, and it had only been two days before she ended up at the police station.

When the driver came to pick up Alice, she had already prepared her emotions, her eyes slightly red, nose tingling, and lips pouting, looking like she was wronged but wouldn't say it.

The driver opened his mouth to say something but ultimately sighed, handed her the phone, and went to pay her bail.

Seeing David's name on the screen, Alice thought, 'What must come will come.'

"David," Alice said.

David was lying on the couch sobering up. When he got the call from the police, he had a bad feeling. He thought it was a fight but didn't expect it to be street racing.

David had never disciplined anyone, not even James, though he occasionally reasoned with him. But clearly, the method he used with James didn't work on Alice.

"Can you give me a reason?" David's voice was a bit hoarse. He frowned, got up, and took a few sips of water to soothe his throat.

Alice sat on the steps outside the police station, feeling the night breeze, picking at the hole in her pants, unsure how to explain.

In fact, she could easily make up a reason. After all, David wasn't here, and he wouldn't find out until he returned from his trip. But she didn't want to lie.

"Because..."

David listened quietly.

"Because it was exhilarating."

"Alice, you have three days. Prepare a written self-criticism and come see me."

Alice fell silent.
