Chapter 21

"Alice, why you buzzing around like a fly?" Clara strutted over, looking for a fight.

"Clara, why you surviving like a cockroach no matter how hard I try to squash you?" Alice shot back with a smirk.

"You made me do this!" Clara hissed through gritted teeth. "What's your deal with David? Why you crashing at his place? No way you're his girlfriend. David's got high standards, and you ain't it."

Alice shrugged, "Never said I was his girlfriend. I'm his fiancée."

"Fiancée?" Clara scoffed, "You really think you're all that, huh? Who are you? Some illegitimate brat. You know who we can't stand in our circle? Not the suck-ups or the poor trying to get in. It's you; you illegitimate brat, even your blood was dirty. Just 'cause your dad's rich, you think you can waltz into our world and mess it up."

Alice stared at Clara, expressionless.

She didn't know if her blood was dirty, but if she could pick her parents, would she choose Marcus? Would she want to be part of this circle?

Nope.

The tension was thick.

Alice's lips were a tight line. She locked eyes with Clara, and after a bit, even Clara felt a shiver.

Right then, Esme Garcia, a classmate hiding behind Alice, stepped up and chucked her backpack at Clara.

"Clara, why do you care who David picks? Even if you like him, so what? Too bad you two are cousins. How sad."

With that, Esme grabbed Alice's hand and started to leave.

Alice's eyes widened. "My backpack."

Esme shrugged, "It's just books, right? No biggie, I'll get you new ones from the teacher tomorrow."

Alice stayed quiet.

"I can't believe every time Clara messes with you, it's 'cause of David?" At KFC, Esme gulped down her soda. "But seriously, you said you're David's fiancée. For real?"

Alice munched on a fry, thinking about her backpack, and sighed, "Yeah, it's true."

Esme laughed so hard she had tears. She slapped Alice's shoulder. "Stop it, you're killing me."

Alice was puzzled. "Is it that hard to believe I'm David's fiancée?"

Esme nodded, "Yeah, no one would buy it."

"Why?" Alice was baffled.

"David's got someone he likes." Esme said it like it was obvious. Then she realized and gave an apologetic smile, "Sorry, only folks in our circle know. Keep it on the down-low."

Circle, always with the circle.

"My family does business with the Tudors, so I hear stuff. No details, but no one would believe you're David's fiancée. Now, if you said you were his side chick or something, that'd be more believable."

Hearing this, Alice first felt a pang in her heart. It hurt.

Seeing Alice's pained look, Esme patted her shoulder, "Forget David. There's always Felix and James, right? If you like older guys, go for Felix! Or someone young like James!"
