Chapter 26

After hitting the shower, David felt a migraine creeping in, so he crashed in his room early.

Middle of the night, he jolted awake, feeling all kinds of crappy and heavy. He touched his forehead—yep, fever.

His throat was scratchy and dry. He finally grabbed his phone and dialed without thinking.

Alice, getting a call at this hour, was ready to lose it.

But seeing it was David, she flicked on the light, squinting, and answered in a groggy voice, "David, you know what time it is?"

"Cut the crap, I caught your bug. Bring the meds from downstairs." David's voice was raspy, and he was barely keeping it together.

Alice trudged downstairs, grabbed the fever patches and meds she had stashed earlier. She even poured a cup of hot water and headed to David's room.

David was propped up against the headboard, the room dimly lit by the bedside lamp.

Alice slapped the fever patch on his forehead, handed him some pills, and after he took them, she headed to the bathroom.

She ran the water, soaked a towel, and wrung it out.

Alice knelt on the bed and started wiping him down.

After she was done, her eyes drifted south. She shook the towel and raised an eyebrow, "Need help down there too?"

David stayed silent.

Alice took the towel back to the bathroom, rinsed it, then came back and yanked the blanket off.

"Hurry up, I still wanna sleep. Pants off." Alice said.

David took a few deep breaths, feeling the heat rising.

He glared at Alice, gripping his waistband so hard his knuckles turned white. "I got it. You go back to sleep."

"Quit stalling." Alice bent down to grab his pants, looked at him seriously, "David, you're sick. Relax. I won't take advantage of you. Trust me."

"Get out." David demanded.

Alice tugged but couldn't get them down.

David said in a low voice, "Alice."

She acted like she didn't hear him.

David's eyes darkened. He suddenly grabbed her wrist, pulled her close, and pinned her on the bed, looking down at her.

Her face was reflected in his eyes.

Her wrist was trapped under the blanket by David.

The air was thick with the smell of medicine and his scent.

"Have I been too nice, making you this bold?" David's hands were on either side of her head, his eyes narrowing dangerously.

He slowly raised one hand, touched the tip of her nose, leaned to her ear, and whispered, "Alice, don't push me."

As soon as he said it, Alice's cheeks burned. She shoved his chest and bolted. It wasn't until he heard the door slam that David lay back, exhaling deeply, still clutching his waistband.

"You need a lesson," David muttered.

In the quiet room, his heartbeat sounded like a drum in his ears.

David squinted and rested a bit. Then he slowly got up, grabbed the towel, and dragged himself to the bathroom to wipe down.

The next day, David touched his forehead; still a bit warm. He decided to take the day off.

After giving Garrett some instructions, David went downstairs and saw breakfast on the table with a sticky note.

He tore it off and read it.

[David, enjoy your meal.]

There was a cheerful smiley face at the end.

David smiled, stuck the note back, and sat down to enjoy the breakfast Alice had made.
