Chapter 149
Chapter 149
Edna
This Palace has great measures in place. There was no way a random ghost would be allowed to cause chaos.
Besides, I don't think the guard would report issues relating to a random ghost to his King.
“A ghost in the palace?” I repeated.
The guard nodded, “Yes. The ghost is a man that looks like you.”
I didn't ask how the guard knew Tyler wasn't a living being.
It would be a stupid question. Tyler's whole body has a look that tells everyone he is not alive anymore.
Besides, ghosts and spectrals were still wrecking havoc everywhere. News would have gotten to the imperial guards in this palace hours ago.
After getting the confirmation I didn't want, I looked around like a thief.
I don't know if Tyler was lurking around.
If it was the previous Tyler I knew, I wouldn't have this suspicion. Alas, things had changed.
“Don’t say another word.” I ordered.
The guard shut up immediately.
‘Killian, is there a way to make sure that both mortals and ghosts won't be able to hear the next words we say?’ I wrote the words on his palm quickly.
Killian looked at me with a question in his eyes. After a few moments, he snapped his fingers and a tangible blue bubble surrounded me, Killian and the guard that came to report.
“You can speak freely now.” Killian said to me.
A sigh of relief left my body.
“Sorry for interrupting you earlier. You can continue what you were saying.” I said to the guard.
The guard nodded, “The conclusion I arrived at might be presumptuous to the King. During one of the mandatory palace patrols, I and my colleague discovered a body. There was no clothes at the scene of the crime. The body looked like the flesh had been stripped away. Only a bloody skeleton was left. Fortunately, even if we were not able to get the amount of information we want, we were able to discover that this body belonged to one of the maids in this Palace.”
My eyes widened.
Who would be so deranged to do the kind of crime the guard was describing?
What did the innocent maid do to the culprit to get this kind of death?
Even if the maid made a mistake, the punishment shouldn't be as sick as this.
“My colleagues have reported the news of ghosts and spectrals wrecking the city and beyond. I came across one ghost during my patrol earlier. My guesses are that this ghost has something to do with the body. Only a ghost would have the means to carry out a murder like this without alerting anyone.” The guard bowed his head, “I didn't mean to jump into conclusion.”
My mind went straight to the little spot of red I saw on Tyler's face earlier.
I shook my head to get rid of that image.
No. Impossible! Tyler would never do what I was thinking. Tyler would never kill anyone.
I was torn between two sides. I knew my brother wouldn't do something like this but the suspicion that was rooted in my heart was like a widespread virus. It didn't want to leave.
As I spent more time with the Tyler I brought back from the dead, I continued to notice more differences between the brother I knew and the one I summoned.
I know dying and coming back from death is a big change and it can disturb an healthy mental state. Still, the differences was too much.
The guard didn't speak again. His lowered head remained in the bowing position.
Although there wasn't any wind, I felt cold.
“Tyler shouldn't be like this.” I muttered.
Did something go wrong somewhere?
I really want to believe that the resurrected Tyler had nothing to do with the death of the palace maid. Alas, one part of my mind was clamoring that he was the culprit.
I felt like I was going crazy.
I fisted my hands. My lips trembled.
“Heartbeat, calm down.” Killian consoled me.
I looked at him with glistening eyes, “We need to send the ghost I brought to this world back. Whether the Tyler I summoned is my real brother or not doesn't matter. It is time for me to wake up. I have to repair the issue I caused.”
Killian nodded.
“We have to use this opportunity to start the ritual that would send those ghosts away.” I began, “Which materials does this ritual need? What is the purple book’s price for sending all ghosts away?”
Killian cleared his throat and flipped through the book in his hand, “The cost is negligible. It just needs blood from two people of opposite sex. Fortunately, we have the required materials here.”
I heaved a sigh of relief. I was impatient to send Tyler or the ghost that was parading as my brother back to where he came from.
I have to come to terms with the fact that my brother is truly gone instead of acting rashly under my emotions.
It was better for me to cherish his memories instead.
Once I take my last breath in this world, me and my brother would meet again. Besides, the future is still far away. There might be an ethical way to bring my brother back.
When—and if—that time comes, I will be more careful.
Kylian flipped to the correct page before biting his index finger.
An injury appeared instantaneously. Killian started using the bloody finger to draw scribbles that I couldn't understand.
After a while, Killian looked at me.
“Your turn.” He said.
I wasn't about to bite my finger like he did. I moved my hand and a prickly vine materialized. The vine poked my finger and blood gushed out of the wound.
Killian handed the book to me and pointed at what I was supposed to write on the floor he had been scribbling on.
I followed the instructions carefully.
My fingers started to move.
