Chapter 163

Chapter 163

Edna

Some days went by. I threw myself into any work related to the strange disease. I tried my best to make sure everything was working properly.

Killian put his all into this case too.

The first set of people that had a close encounter with the disease fell sick. A large percentage of this group of people were imperial guards. Since we did not have a cure for the disease yet, Killian and I prepared compensation for those people and their families.

That compensation wasn't enough to buy a life. Still, it was better than nothing.

The scientists and doctors in charge of researching a cure were able to come up with drugs and other ways to alleviate the symptoms of the infected people.

Their discovery was able to delay the onset of the next stage of the disease too.

That discovery was one of the things that kept us going. It was like the light at the end of the tunnel.

Today, I decided to go to one of the gardens in the palace. I wanted to get a few moments that is not concentrated on this case to myself.

Like Killian had said in the past, I would be able to give my best once I strike the right balance between work and rest.

A maid was following me but she wasn't too close. I appreciated that.

It felt weird to be shadowed. Killian was worried about my safety. The current situation was tense. Obviously, he kept the scheme at the ritualistic party in mind.

I walked into the garden. The garden was filled with all kinds of flowers. I spotted purple roses in one direction.

My feet took me in that direction immediately. I stood in front of the cluster of purple roses before leaning downward.

My nose sniffed. A pleasant scent rushed into my nostrils. I hummed in satisfaction. The flowers smelled as beautiful as it looked.

Rustling sounds brought my attention away from the purple flowers to the area beside it.

That area was covered by a medium size bush. A few flowers that I don't recognize were mixed into this green clump.

I stepped backwards. A meow sounded.

Then, the culprit that had been making the rustling sounds appeared from the green bush.

It was an orange cat with black stripes. It looked like a mini version of a tiger from Earth.

The cat was too cute.

A warm feeling wrapped around my heart. The stress from the past few days seemed to lighten.

I wanted to stroke the cat.

I walked forward slowly. I didn't want to scare the cat. The cat didn't look like it was tamed so I had to be careful.

"Miss Edna, please don't approach the cat casually." The maid that had been following me around warned.

I looked back at her and smiled, "Don't worry, I know what I am doing. I would be careful."

I didn't have any snacks or food on me. There was nothing I could use to bait the cat to come closer to me. I stretched my right hand towards the cat and moved forward very slowly.

I just wanted one little touch before I let the cat go.

The cat didn't behave in an aggressive way. It sat on its hind legs and licked its right paw.

Once in a while, its feline eyes would fall on my approaching figure.

Every few seconds, I stopped to observe the cat. If it showed any aggressive tendencies, I would back off immediately.

Fortunately, the cat still remained calm.

Finally, I got into a reachable range. My hand landed on the cat's head.

I paused to gauge the cat's reaction. The cat didn't mind me. It was still licking its paw.

Then, I stroked the cat slowly.

I made sure I was quiet and I tried my best to release a comfortable aura.

After stroking the cat over and over, my hand touched something. The part I touched didn't feel right.

I looked closer. One area of the cat's body was filled with bumps and boils. This current appearance looked like it had started from a rash.

Sparse hair covered the area. I couldn't believe the fact that I didn't see this weird part of the cat earlier.

My brow furrowed. This cat was sick. Some of the boils were releasing pus.

Although the cat wasn't showing any signs of pain yet, I was still heartbroken. It would be better to get this cat to a veterinary doctor as soon as possible.

I stopped touching the cat and turned my head towards the maid that had been following me.

"Hey, can you schedule the earliest appointment with the nearest veterinary doctor around? We have to treat this cat." I said.

The maid was in the process of nodding when her eyes shifted from me to the cat near me.

Her strange action made my left brow rose.

Did something happen?

I turned around to look at the cat. The cat that was calm and licking its paws a few seconds ago had changed into something I couldn't recognize.

The cat's eyes were filled with pain and its pupils seemed to be darker.

The cat dug one of its sharp claws into the part of its body that was filled with bumps and boils. The cat looked like it wanted to scooped that sick part out.

Before I could make any moves to stop the cat or alert the maid, the cat's second paw swiped at me.

Since I was very close to the cat, the attack succeeded. My hand gained four new vertical scratches.

A hiss slipped out of my lips as I stood up hurriedly.

The cat stopped self mutilating and rushed into the nearest cluster of grass.

"That stupid cat!" The maid that was following me cursed, “Miss Edna, I told you not to approach it."

"I know." I replied.

The area the cat scratched was burning with pain. I didn't know that injuries caused by cats could hurt like this.

"Let's get this injury treated, Miss Edna." The maid said.

I nodded, "Can you message a few guards to come to this garden. Two to three guards would do. Just instruct them to search this garden for that cat. If three or two people are not enough for the search, they can ask more guards to join. That cat is sick and we should try to treat it."

The maid looked like she didn't want to obey my words for a second. I knew if it was up to her, she would rather let that cat wallow in the pain it was feeling.

Although I could understand the maid’s point of view, I didn't really agree with the approach.

I could see that the injury the cat caused was because of the pain it was feeling. I did not hold the injury against the cat.
