Chapter 162
Chapter 162
Edna
I know what goes into the discovery of a new disease or illness. People would die. If I could reduce the amount of people that would be sacrificed in the discovery of this disease, I would.
"First, the infected person would look pale. Then, nausea would follow. Their hair, nails and teeth would start to fall out. The area around their eyes would darken. Rashes and boils would appear on the infected person's skin. After that, the affected skin would start to fester. There are a few other symptoms in between. After all that, death would be next." The guard explained.
I know my memory wasn't photographic so I combed my mind carefully. I didn't want to miss anything. Sadly, after going through my memories over and over again, nothing came up.
There wasn't an human illness that I could remember with the same symptoms that the guard described.
My lips formed a thin line.
"Edna, is something bothering you?" Killian looked at me with concern.
A sigh left my mouth.
"I wanted to know about the symptoms of this disease so I can see if it was similar to any human disease I can remember. Unfortunately, nothing is forthcoming. I don't know if there is really no human disease similar to this strange illness or if my memory isn't good enough. There is also the possibility of the existence of an human disease that matches this new illness your people discovered. I might not have encountered it before I left the earth.” I said.
"You have tried your best." Killian responded.
I nodded.
Killian's eyes moved to the guard, "Were you close to the disease and the infected patients?"
The guard shook his head, "No, your Highness. We don't know what this disease is yet. Everything is unpredictable. We controlled the number of people that would go near the disease and the infected people. There is no way an infected guard would visit you. That would be treason. Your Highness's life is precious. Because of this reason, security measures have been implemented around the palace.”
Killian looked at the guard appreciatively, “I didn't invest all my energy in you guys for nothing.”
"Killian, I want to join your guards in the investigation of this strange disease." I announced.
My interest and empathy was aroused.
Killian shook his head, "Absolutely not. Can't you hear the guard? This is an unknown disease. I don't want you to be infected with something there is no cure for. I will try my best to look for a cure to this disease.”
"You said I shouldn't get involved but you vowed to get the bottom of this. How can you find a cure without getting involved personally? I don't want you to be hurt too. Sometimes, reality doesn't follow our wishes. We just have to accept that. This situation requires all the energy and help we can get. We have to get involved personally.” I rebutted.
"When I said I was going to get to the bottom of this, I didn't mean that I would expose myself to the disease like the guards in charge of the investigation.” Killian replied.
“Huh?” A sound filled with confusion dropped from my lips.
“Edna, this planet needs a king. I am not saying I am the best King in the history of this world but I am better than a large portion of my predecessors. I don't want the people of this world to experience the nightmares they felt under those previous Kings again. I must try my best to keep my life intact. I am considering the overall picture here. I would put my all into this case, it will just be behind the scenes.” Killian said.
I could understand what Killian was talking about. I was not so naive to think that Vladan was the only bad egg in the midst of the officials or even this world as a whole.
Many people that have tasted power and wealth would usually not care about the common population.
There was a very high chance that those power hungry people will do bad things if they get the throne.
The optimal solution was to keep the familiar Killian in power, instead of depending on an unknown future King.
Killian was taking a reasonable step from his point of view.
Besides, who doesn't love their life?
Even with all these logical reasonings, my heart still felt uncomfortable.
I cheered myself up.
Killian was still a good leader. At least, he wasn't letting the common people and the infected people fend for themselves.
He was still going to put his energy into finding a cure. Besides, Killian's specialty wasn't the study of viruses and other causes of diseases.
It would be for the best if he worked from behind the scenes.
"Since I am not allowed to join the guards that are working closely with the strange disease and the infected patients, can I get involved in the other areas that are behind the scenes for this case?" I questioned, "I am not accepting no for an answer."
"Yes. Like you said, we need all the help we can get." Killian said before turning to the guard, "Transfer the patients that hadn't been infected with this strange disease away from the hospitals those infected people had been admitted to. We have to curb the spread of the disease."
"We have already done that, your Highness." The guard replied, "The doctors and scientists available are working hard to study the disease.”
"That is good. You can go back." Killian said, "Make sure to keep me updated. Send the names of the doctors and scientists working on this case to me as soon as you can. I would like to speak to them."
"Okay, your Highness." The guard said before leaving.
Killian stood up and glanced at the window closest to him.
"Let's get something into our stomachs." He said.
"There is a serious matter that is still unsolved hanging over our heads and you want us to have lunch now?" I questioned.
An uncomfortable feeling wrapped around my heart again.
My appetite was gone.
"Yes. I mean exactly what I said. The people that fell victim to this strange disease would want us to work towards a solution at our best state. I don't want to work while I am hungry and I don't want you to do so too." Killian said.
"I understand. I don't know why I am getting triggered unnecessarily." I said as I stood up too.
Although I didn't have any appetite, I was going to force myself to eat something. Killian was right.
The current issue we are facing would only have a chance of improving if I work in my best state.
The two of us left the study and headed towards the dining room slowly.
