Chapter 166

Chapter 166
Edna
My ears felt like it had been wrapped with water. My voice sounded like a distorted scream from outer space to me.

I didn't pay any attention to that. I kept my eyes trained on Killian. I didn't blink. The air started to make the moisture in my eyeballs disappear. I still didn't move my eyelids.

Killian sighed.

He stood up before dragging the chair he was sitting down on closer to my bed. When he got to a satisfactory range, he stopped and sat down again.

His eyes fell on my eager gaze, "The cat is truly infected with the disease we have been investigating. I am not trying to scare you. Like you, I really hoped that it was something else. Alas."

His hand wrapped around my own.

I felt like my mind couldn't process any single thought. It was completely blank. I was staring at Killian but my brain wasn't processing information. I was just in a strange limbo.

"N-no. No." A trembling word dropped from my shaky lips

Killian's fingers that was wrapped around my right hand tightened.

"Don't worry, things would turn out fine." He consoled me, "I won't let anything happen to you. You can't die. You won't die."

The last sentence was assertive.

His words brought my wandering mind back to the present.

What was done was done. There was no reason to keep wallowing in 'what ifs'. Since the disease was already running through my veins, the next best thing is preventing Killian from contracting the same illness.

He had been touching me and being as close as possible since the moment I woke up. I don't even need to imagine how close he was to me during the moments that I was unconscious. His recent actions were enough evidence.

My fingers moved and I removed my hand from his old.

He looked at me with surprise .

His hands moved slightly. I knew he was ready to hold me again. I hid my hand from his direct gaze.

My willpower suppressed the pain that flowed through my body when I moved my hands.

"Edna, you are not supposed to move." Killian said, "Why are you hiding from me?"

"You are not supposed to be asking that question. The answer is so obvious. Why won't I hide from you? I am already infected with this new disease and there is no known cure yet. I can't let you get infected. You said it yourself. You are the king of this world and you should not treat your life in a dispensable way." I responded.

Killian chuckled. His voice echoed throughout the room we are in.

The chuckle did not sound like an happy one.

"Edna, those words I said had a condition attached to it. I forgot to tell you about those conditions when I spoke that day. If you fall sick, there's no way I would sit back and work from behind the scenes. I can't let you go through your current experience alone. Although I care about the people of this world, the care I have for them is not comparable to the one I have for you. I am selfish. You don't need to tell me that." Killian spoke.

His eyes reddened. The way his eyes looked reminded me of how he appeared when he was under the influence of the aphrodisiac drug from the ritualistic party.

I won't lie, I was happy that I was an exception to Killian's boundaries. Still, a large part of me still felt bad.

I love the care Killian has for me. I have the same love for him too. I don't want him to be ill. I don't want him to feel the kind of pain that was currently threaded through my body.

"I think you need to do a test. I want you to be fine. Killian, I don't want to worry about you. For your sake, I would take care of myself and cooperate with the treatment plan. Things would be fine and we will find a cure too. Don't treat yourself badly, please." I said.

"I will treat myself better. I have to make you healthy first. I have contacted the doctors and scientists working on the cure. Nothing is forthcoming though." Killian commented.

His face was covered with a gloomy cloud.

"The only drug that has been administered to you is the one that was recently created to curb the advancement of the disease." He finished.

I was surprised. The kind of pain I was feeling was enough to run anyone mad. I can't believe that this current situation was obtained because of the drug.

I can not imagine the kind of pain and agony I would be feeling if I didn't take the drug.

No matter how empathetic I was, my brain did not truly know the extent of the pain the infected populace was feeling until I walked a mile in their shoes.

"Don't rush the people working on the cure. They might make mistakes if you stress them too much. Things would be okay, Killian. Let's be patient." I said.

"I am being as patient as I can." Killian replied.

Something occurred to me.

I blinked, "Killian, I asked a few guards to look for the cat in the garden the injury happened in. I don't know if they found the cat. We might be able to get something if we examine the cat properly."

Killian sighed, "The maid that followed you that day told me about this when you were unconscious. Those guards didn't find the cat. I forgot to mention it to you earlier."

"Okay." I responded.

Although my heart still cared about the cat, I can't really do anything at this point. I just hoped the cat was fine even when it was unlikely.
