Chapter 159

Chapter 159

Edna

My biological clock woke me up. My eyelids fluttered before lifting upwards. Everywhere was dim. The sliver of light drifting into the room through the tiny vertical spaces left by the curtains assured me that this was a brand new day.

I tried to sit up. A low sound slipped out of my lips. My movements paused for an unknown amount to time. I finally completed my goal of sitting up when my body adapted to the discomfort.

My breathing was a bit hurried. My attempt to sit up felt like a marathon race.

I felt like a speeding truck had rammed into me. Everywhere hurt.

My skin was filled with marks and bruises. Some of the bruises looked like injuries.

My lips stung.

My tongue licked my lips slowly. The stinging pain I was feeling seemed to be alleviated. From the brief movement my tongue did, it was clear that my lips were swollen.

I stopped observing my body.

All this was part of what I signed up for.

Besides, the happiness in my heart offset some of my body's discomfort.

My body had been cleaned. Only the marks on my body hinted at what happened last night.

Even the quilt had been changed.

I don't know how Killian did it.

My body's improved healing capability healed the bruises I have slowly.

“Awake?" Killian's voice came.

My heart jumped before going back to the normal rhythm.

I glared at him, "You just like scaring me for no reason."

His lips curved into sheepish smile.

"I am so sorry." Killian apologized promptly.

"I forgive you." I decided to let him go this time.

"Are you okay? I was too harsh last night. I am so sorry for the pain I caused." Killian apologized again.

I waved him away, "You don't have to worry about this. I just have to rest for a while and I will be fine."

"You don't need to do anything today. Just stay in bed and get a proper rest." Killian advised.

I blinked, "This is not the time to indulge in pleasure. I can rest anytime. We still have to think about what caused your madness yesterday."

"You don't have to worry about that. I would not ignore that kind of danger. I am scared that you might be targeted instead so I took this serious." Killian said.

"It is good to be serious. Did you find out about anything?" I focused my eyes on him.

Killian's face became stern, "Yes. I was able to think deeply without any interference from strange substances this time. I smelled a special scent on you yesterday and I have reasons to believe that my agitation was caused by that scent. I started my investigation from that angle. You were with me when people came over to exchange pleasantries. I did not smell that scent during those times so I figured that you got the smell when you went to the food area."

I nodded appreciatively. Killian's thought process was great.

"Getting the information about this strange scent from you would have made my work easier and faster. Alas, you were resting when I began my investigation. I didn't want to disturb you. I asked around and the guards told me about a lady bumping into you when you were getting things to eat from the food area. I came to the conclusion that the special scent on you that triggered me was left by that strange lady." Killian explained.

"I planned to tell you about that lady when I woke up. I didn't expect the fact that you would wake up early. I am glad my sleep didn't delay your investigation." I said.

Killian continued, "Although I haven't seen that lady, others could still remember her face. I ordered my guards to perform an intense search. The target area of the search is this palace and its vicinity. Finally, we found her."

My eyes brightened, "Great. Did she tell you who sent her when you found her? What was the plan behind this scheme?"

Killian shook his head, "Unfortunately, your questions and mine are going to remain unanswered. When my guards found her, she was dead. She was in one of the lakes close to the hall the ritualistic party was held in. If my guards weren't looking carefully they would not have known that she was the one in the lake."

My eyes widened to their limits, "Dead? How? Why? Did she commit suicide out of fear of your retaliation? Now, the clue has led us to a dead end. What are we going to do with a dead body that would not reveal anything?"

"It is not clear whether it is suicide or murder. The master might behind this scheme is cunning." Killian said, "I would make sure I find them and destroyed them."

"Killian, do things moderately. I know you are powerful but you also have to be careful. There are things that can cause trouble for you in this world. The strange scent that made you agitated yesterday is one of them." I advised.

The light breeze from the outside world made the curtains move.

I continued, "The mastermind behind this incident clearly doesn't fear or respect you. Besides, the mastermind is in the dark while you are in the light. The only person that might reveal who the mastermind is has turned into a corpse. If you insist on continuing your investigation, you would be working without a clear direction."

"Don't worry. I know my limits." Killian's hand wrapped around my own, "I am hoping to live out the rest of my life with you. I wouldn't do something stupid."

I let out a sigh of relief, "That's good. You must not turn me into a widow."
