Chapter 240

He lifts his head from my hand as I maneuver myself from on top to beside him. He opens his eyes, slowly looking around. While he may be lucid after several minutes of being psychotic the effects of it are still there. While I’m hoping I can avoid sedating the young man so far his body language is screaming how much he still needs it. He pushes himself up off the floor but being in the middle of my office spooks him again.
“No! Get out of my head!” He screams as he tries to duck into a ball.
“No, Jamie. Don’t curl up son, don’t fight me.”
My tone is firm but neutral as I attempt to pull him into me. He fights me briefly before giving into what I know he needs. Suddenly he is completely wrapped around me as if he forgot that he is a twenty-one year old man. We are now sitting chest to chest, his legs wrapped around my waist and his arms around my chest clinging to the fabric of my shirt. I recover quickly from his unexpected response wrapping my own arms around him as he silently sobs.
“Lay your head to the side Jamie. My scent will provide you a ground to where you are compared to where you’ve been.”
I attempt to slowly guide his head into a better position but he fights, yelping and screaming until he shakes my hand off of him. I rub between his shoulders silently, lost in my own thoughts as to how ill prepared I was for such a unique situation. Here Cole was, believing that if he left his friend would be in greater danger than he already is yet by staying, Jamie’s loyalty to Cole is resulting in the young man’s own torture.
‘I brought two different dosages of Valium. I think the lower dose would benefit him the most.’
I nod as I rock him, trying again to guide his head into a better position on my shoulder.
“Jamie, I’m going to give you a shot of Valium in your arm. Just stay still.” She instructs him as she wipes down his arm.
“I passed out after the fifth hit with that belt tearing into my back. I don’t know how many he actually gave me.” Angela pauses a moment, hearing his whispered confession.
“Little pinch.” She states as she gives him the shot.
He lays against me, motionless, slowly relaxing his hold on the back of my shirt.
“I don’t know how long I was out but I woke up screaming. Both of my arms were dislocated because he left me hanging after I passed out. I was only awake a minute or two before I knocked out again.”
His voice is steady but monotonous as he speaks, giving me the feeling that he’s gone into an emotional type of shock.
“I heard alpha come in before I saw him. I remember him telling Alpha Andre that he’s terrorized me enough that he’s not going to touch me until I help Cole again. I remember the voices of the border patrol wolves that tied me up. The one that prayed for mercy on me seemed to have a hard time seeing my back. Alpha Andre wrapped a blanket around me and held me up as the other two worked to release me from the chains. It surprised me to see a gurney come into view after my arms were released. The three of them picked me up and put me on my stomach on the bed. I yelped and screamed the whole time but no one said a word.
Once I stopped yelping Alpha Redmen spoke again. He told me that now that I know what he’s willing to do to me I had a choice to make. Abandon Cole. Walk away and let him suffer as he deserves to suffer. If I show him that I have abandoned Cole than he would transfer me and my family into my dad’s pack but if I continue to help Cole, if anyone in my family helps him in any way, than the individual that helps him will receive thirty hits to their bare bottom with the buckle and lose our chance at leaving. Time will tell him what we choose to do.
I woke up in the hospital wing three days later. The doctor explained that the stress of being beaten combined with the silver weakened my wolf to the point that it would take a while for me to heal enough to leave. I stayed there for a week before the gel patches that assist in the regeneration of skin had reduced my pain enough that I could get out of bed on my own. Even though the staff was nice to me I found out that alpha told my parents what he did but they weren’t allowed to take any time off to visit me and no visitors were allowed in the wing after 5pm.
The beating happened on a Monday so the first time dad was able to come was Friday when he only works half a day. Mom wanted to come but alpha wouldn’t let my siblings come into the wing and would not authorize extended care at the daycare. That first time I saw him after it happened I whispered my confession. I apologized for being selfish and unwilling to give moving out of our wretched pack a second thought. I don’t understand why I feel the way I do but I can not abandon Cole.”
His confession is heartbreaking as he breaks down again. Not because of his selfishness of sacrificing his family’s ability to find peace but that he feels shame in his sacrifice and frustration for not knowing why.
“Have you ever heard of the fated beta?” I ask as I rub the back of his head.
“No sir. I’ve heard of the fated mate but not the beta.”
“That’s not surprising as it’s seen more as a myth than anything real but I do believe it is true. When Connor was my beta my pack was in chaos. Some chaos after the alpha dies is normal but for it to go on for five years is unusual. It’s also unusual for the beta chosen for the position to abandon the pack but that’s what happened to me. About a year before Patrick lost his mate and returned to Crimson Dawn, Connor stopped fulfilling his duties as beta and abandoned the pack. I’m not even certain when he left as I was so overwhelmed by taking on the alpha and beta roles as well as being a doctor and a father that he just snuck away.
When Pat came back he was in a bad place after losing his fated mate. He and his son were also abandoned by his mate’s pack and coming home was the best thing he felt he could do. I didn’t want him to jump into everything I was behind on but he did. Everything fell into place and it was like he never left. Even though the pack didn’t know Pat very well, he had been away for ten years, they felt the change between their leaders.
The blessing of the fated beta is that they are fiercely protective and incredibly loyal to their fated alpha and the alpha returns the same. While Goddess Diana will allow the alpha/beta duo to separate easier than fated mates, it’s the best alphas, the ones who are most deserving, that tend to never lose their beta once they are found.”
“Alpha.” He yawns softly as he speaks.
“I’m starting to feel the sedative. I think I need to lay down before I fall asleep in your lap. I’m sorry I thought you could be as cruel as him. You really are a nice alpha.”
“I’m glad you think so after I played such a nasty trick on you. I do live up to my reputation as being strict and unforgiving but at the same time, those closest to me know that I’m fair, understanding and quite forgiving when needed. You have nothing to apologize for as I had no idea that you were being tortured.”
“Tortured, alpha?” He seems surprised that I see his ordeal in such a way.
“Angela, can you help him stand so we can finish the conversation in the bedroom? He really is close to falling asleep.”
