Chapter 243

(Demetri’s POV)

I nod thoughtfully at his statement.
“That does seem to explain some of the things I’ve seen.”
“What is it that it explains?” Jamie is starting to relax enough to start talking a bit more freely.
“How you showed fear but you didn’t fight back. You accepted it without question when I requested that you stay back after the first meeting and despite your confusion and fear, which kept you from being able to console your mate, you helped gather her belongings. You didn’t stop packing her room until she had a complete meltdown which forced me to stop both of you long enough to comfort her before explaining what was happening.
While you may have argued against being punished and even ran from me when I had you convinced that I was implementing physical punishment, you still showed up to my requested meeting and you did it on time. You have been taught not to run from your punishment which makes me wonder if Cole has been taught the same.”
He nods as he begins to speak again.
“I asked him before, privately, why he doesn’t run. The only answer he could provide was that it doesn’t do any good. He’s also made mention of deserving what he’s getting but I have seen first hand what happens when his fear of his father overrides his acceptance of his life.”
All I can do is nod as I too have at least seen the aftermath of such attempts.
“The reason I wanted to talk after such a fear-filled beginning to our meeting is my concerns for you and your family regarding your involvement with Cole. From the very first week, when he expressed concerns towards you, Alex and both your families, I’ve known that getting him out would be complicated. I was hoping that he would reconsider his resolve to return and it was only a month or two ago that he disclosed why he feels such an immense need to return. While I have contemplated endlessly for months the best way to get him out I’m at a loss as to how to do it as most of the plans I have, counted on things that are no longer viable.”
“What plans were you thinking of?” I smile modestly as Jamie continues to relax with our meeting.
“My initial plan was to have him complete a full run with me and send a request for him to come back in January for my year-long run.”
“I thought canceling this run makes it so you can’t hold the full year run?”
“That’s partially true but not the reason it won’t work. Has Cole talked to you about what happened when we put him on a mod seventy-two?”
He shakes his head.
“I’m not certain what that is.”
“I’m certain that you’re familiar with the seventy-two hour psychiatric hold?” My statement comes out sounding like a question.
“They get really nasty for him when his father forces him into the hospital on one.”
“When he went into a crisis that his father created, he told me that they were. I tend to use a modified seventy-two hour hold when I feel we can prevent an individual from engaging in dangerous behavior instead of waiting for them to get that low but the reason I brought it up was because of what put him in the mental health crisis.”
Jamie stares at me intensely, waiting for me to continue.
“Cole’s father had spent a week mentally tearing him down by telling him that when the council visited the pack he turned over the application needed for the committee to start the investigation into ferality.”
“What?!”
Jamie shouts, nearly pushing Micayla into the floor as he sits up in the chair.
“Alpha has no shame. He’s the fucking feral wolf!”
“Easy Jamie. You’re right in Micayla’s ear. Needless to say I agree that Alpha Redmen and quite possibly the middle son, Kristoph, are quite possibly feral wolves but the reason I can’t use the year long run is because when an application on ferality is turned over to the council the council puts a freeze on the wolf’s activity. Once Cole returns home, even if I held another run, he would not be approved by the council to attend.”
He sits back hard with a sigh.
“Was there another plan you were exploring?” He asks much quieter now.
“Another that I had to scrap was for your family to transfer to my pack. I have a genuine interest in you as a warrior and I’ve researched your father. Mr. Jenkins has several useful skills and connections that I’m interested in gaining. My plan was to sneak Cole out when your family left but…”
“Alpha shot down your request.” Jamie interrupts.
“Unfortunately, it only took him twenty-four hours to get back to me with a rejection of the application.” He nods his head but remains silent.
“I’ve started talking with Dr. Carter on a more personal level. He shares my concern for Cole and is willing to help. He said that if Cole is willing to come back for a laptop then the information it contains must be very important and he’s going to need help protecting it until he can get it out of the territory.”
“I agree, alpha. What can I do to help?”
“I appreciate you being so straightforward but you never answered my question and I have a few more beyond it to make certain that your younger siblings aren’t put in harm's way.”
“I’m sorry alpha, what was your question?”
“It’s about the abuse and torture that you’re suffering. I’d like to get a better idea of what’s happening to you and how often.”
“I’m not abused or tortured alpha. I told you that I chose this.”
“That, is actually a huge concern of mine. You deny that he’s abusing you simply because you chose to accept his punishment over allowing your best friend and alpha die at his torturous hands.”
“I’m not abused.” He states again, chuckling nervously while shaking his head.
“How often are you punished?” He looks up suddenly, caught off guard by my question.
“It depends on how often I help him.”
“Can you give me a range?”
“Not really. At most it happens once a week but I’ve gone several months without a beating even though I’ve still helped Cole.”
“So the maximum is once a week no matter how often you help him?”
“Alpha has deviated slightly from time to time on what the punishment is but that’s usually when he has been exceptionally cruel towards Cole.”
“I see. Are you willing to tell me what this deviation entails?”
He shakes his head and I can tell he’s getting tense again by the way he tries to bury himself into Micayla’s neck.
“What about the thirty? Does he put all of them in one area?”
“No sir.” I manage to get him back. “He splits them between my lower back, rear and thighs. He also splits the hits between him and his beta. The deviation is when delta gets involved. His hits are nearly as hard as alpha’s and his aim is damn near perfect.”
He whispers as if he doesn’t want me to hear his pain.
