Chapter 258
“Come.” I state as I gently pull him up and into me.
He whimpers and fights briefly before taking hold of me tightly. We simply stand in silence, waiting for the trauma of leaving to subside. I wait for him to push away first, following his lead for when he’s ready to start out towards the front door.
“Would you like some Ativan? It won’t take effect until you're well on your way north so it won’t alter your ability to decide to stay or go but it will make the trip easier to handle.”
“Please.”
Is all he manages to whisper against my neck before he pushes himself up to stand on his own.
“Stay.”
I whisper just as quietly as I step away from him into the attached bathroom, opening the cabinet and pulling out the low dose Ativan that I keep there. I return in front of him cupping his chin in my hands, lifting his head so he’s looking straight instead of the floor. He whimpers subtly as he pulls away but I don’t allow him to leave me.
“Easy there, son.” I whisper as I use my thumbs to clear his cheeks. “I will never purposely hurt you. I know a lot of things in medicine cause pain but it’s all in an effort to help you not hurt you further. I will talk with the driver and make sure that if you change your mind before getting out of my territory he will stop and let you out. I’ll grab the truck and come get you, bring you back here.”
He nods in understanding as I place the bottle of Ativan in his hand.
“One will take the edge off, two will help you sleep a few hours.”
He nods as he opens the bottle, removing two and popping them in his mouth. He closes his eyes, obviously trying to relax as they dissolve.
“Are you sure this is the route you want to take?” I ask again hoping he might change his mind.
“I don’t expect you to understand but this is what I need to do.”
“I may not understand why you need to return but I do understand unresolved business. Let Jamie help you. He knows the worse he may receive and it will end once you leave. I need you to have faith in the ones who wish to help you.
Alex said the day you run, when he gets his hands on you, the max you will stay at Red General is three days at which point he will implement operation underground. I don’t know the full details, I told him not to share them but I do know that when you are transferred to White General it will be under a different name.”
He looks up quickly, obviously shocked.
“He’s been planning this?” He asks.
“I don’t know for how long he’s been thinking about it but yes, it seems he has his own plan in mind for getting you here. I don’t know the limits of Jessa’s channel but you should be able to connect with her once you’re about half way here.”
He nods as he finally starts taking steps towards the door. I follow him out into the office where he stops at the door to put his shoes on. When we step out into the hall the six bags I packed for him and Jamie are gone thanks to my helpers.
He makes his way slowly to the door, reaching slowly for the knob. It feels like everything is moving in slow motion yet this day has wizzed but far too quickly.
I step outside onto the porch, looking around me I see that all the bags are gone and a smaller, black hair, brown eyed man is finishing packing the back of the van.
“Good day.” I call out to him.
“Have any problems finding the place?”
“No sir.” His reply is short and disciplined.
“I just wasn’t expecting to stop here on the way back. Alpha and I both dislike when our plans are interrupted but I was the closest that the council could find under the circumstances.”
“And what circumstance is that?” I inquire as I wasn’t notified of any changes.
“You weren’t told?”
“No sir.”
He sighs with half a growl as he backs out of the van. He walks closer to us, stopping at the bottom of the steps, his delta aura blazing hot. It’s strong enough that Cole backs away from the steps with a small whimper, taking a seat on the glider beside the front door.
“What’s your name, by the way?”
“Delta Steven Ashman from White Ridge.” He states impatiently while holding his hand out for a shake.
“Nice to meet you Delta Ashman, I am Alpha Demetri Black. The last I was informed the Black Moon pack was supposed to be transporting them part way home.” I respond back.
I’m trying to stay neutral but the wolf has already ruffled my fur.
“There was a last minute change. Wolves from the Red Fang pack arrived Monday and Alpha Redmen requested that we do the pick up. I guess when the council saw I had a small drop off at Wolfington Academy that it wouldn’t be that big of a deal to do the transfer. I guess the council doesn’t count anybody’s time as worth anything because this stop has taken an hour and a half out of my trip and I’m short on patience after dealing with six half feral boys either crying or acting out the entire eight hour trip.”
“Perhaps we should reconsider allowing them to go with you if you’re having such a bad day.”
“Why does the day I’m having matter? I’m already here, we need to get on the road if we’re going to make decent time.”
“My concern is the he-wolf behind me is already having extremely high anxiety issues relating to his return to Red Fang. Allowing a wolf with no patience towards children to take an adult that’s likely in worse mental health shape than them is highly problematic.” He sighs hard as he goes silent for a minute.
“Is he going to fight with the other young man that’s coming?” He finally holds a slightly calmer tone.
“No. Cole and Jamie are very close and Jamie will likely be very calming for Cole.” I speak as I descend the stairs between us.
“I can keep my cool towards an adult with anxiety. I wasn’t too impressed by the lot that got off the bus Monday so hearing that he’s having issues returning to such a place I can understand. While Alpha Whiteman isn’t a very comforting alpha he has changed his ways towards the better when the council threatened to remove him from power for abusing his pack. Most of the older ones in the pack still struggle with comforting those who have been treated badly but we no longer manhandle anyone.”
“That’s why the boys were taken to Wolfington?”
“Partly. Alpha Whiteman keeps the council closer than most alphas now and he’s implemented a three strikes rule for the teens. The five council members that reside at the pack are the ones to investigate fights among pack members and they are the ones that sentence and implement the punishment.”
“So the council sent the boys to Wolfington?”
“Because of the distance, Wolfington is only for the most problematic teens. They are usually sent to a special school to work on their problems first and if they are still struggling after a year of intensive treatment and training at home, their next offense sends them to Wolfington.”
“That makes a little more sense.” I pause before continuing. “I understand that this has taken a chunk of time out of your day but this unexpected change is going to make it harder for Cole to leave and I’d like a moment to talk with him and get his feelings about leaving with you.”
“What about the other one? I only see one out here.”
“His decision will only be made after Cole makes his.”
I explain as I turn back to the steps making my way back to Cole. I slow my walk as I see him, his hands are in his hair squeezing hard the little bit of length that has returned in the two months since we had to give him a buzz cut.
