Chapter 246

I’m stunned to say the least as this was not the news that I was anticipating. The alpha has no plan? He’s relying on me to run? Does he have any idea what he’s asking me to do? What happened the only time right before turning eighteen that I tried to run? What happens when I get caught?
Of course he doesn’t. It’s something only Dr. Carter knows as he’s the one that discovered me hanging by my arms in the training office turned torture chamber. I know I had mentioned it a month ago as being the only way out but I was counting on alpha to come up with something, anything but that.
I’m breathing hard in pants as my focus is totally gone. I know alpha is still talking, telling me of everything he’s putting in place to support me getting out of there but it’s muffled and hard to understand. I yelp as Jessa slides her hand onto my arm bringing silence to the room. No one anticipated this reaction towards simply planning to run away.
“I’m sorry Cole. I know this is a lot of information all at once. The most important thing that I need you to believe is that you’re not alone. I promise you, if you have tried to run in the past and got punished for it, you have help this time.”
“Maybe you’re right. Maybe that is what the plan should be.”
I shock myself speaking out loud the very thing that has put me in a panic. The memories of healing from that one and only time was a nightmare.
“Is my assumption correct? You’ve tried to run before but got caught?” I nod my head as I try to reign in my flashbacks.
“It was a hard three days. He broke multiple bones but as long as he doesn’t break my legs and you get Jamie and Dr. Carter involved then I can get out.”
The silence in the room is deafening, forcing me to look up at all the shocked faces. One look at Jessa’s face, contorted with horror is all it takes for me to snatch her from beside me. Her yelp echoes off the walls as she briefly fights me before collapsing into tears in my lap.
“I’m so sorry Jessa. I wasn’t thinking when I spoke.”
“It’s not that.” She blubbers through. “I just…. I just can’t…..”
“Shhhh. It’s okay baby, wait until you calm so you’re easier to understand.”
She lays her head on my shoulder but I can tell she’s in an awkward position that’s uncomfortable for both of us. I slide my arm beneath her knees, freezing my movements as she tenses.
“Move with me.” I whisper, hoping that she’ll relax.
I move both of us so that my back is supported by the corner of the couch and she’s lying comfortably on her side against me.
“May I touch your back?”
I whisper as I slide my thumb just under the hem of her shirt. To my relief she relaxes, cuddling her body even closer to mine.
“Since running seems to be the only way and you’re already familiar with the harsh penalties that come with getting caught, you tell me what you need to get out of the territory.”
Alpha is the first to speak after the initial shock of the idea.
“I’m sorry Jessa. I know hearing this won’t be easy but there needs to be a plan.”
I feel her nod as I brush my hand through her hair.
“I was nearly eighteen the only time I’ve crossed the border without permission. It has taken me years to figure out the layout of my father’s territory, the shortest distance from my room to Red Fang’s border and the neutral center line between White Moon and White Fang territories. While both are allies with Red Fang and have been for decades I’m certain that the alphas of both packs were hoping that the new alpha would continue my grandfather’s trend of becoming more civilized.
Instead, my father challenged his brother to a duel for the position once grandpa died. At least that’s what Andre told me. He was six when dad killed his brother and banished his mate and children from the pack. I think he said it was a month or two before Chloe and I were born. He and Ashley were the only ones old enough to remember.
The council honored the change based on the lies he told them. Supposedly dad turned in Uncle Dillion’s plans for the pack in as his own and showed the council his, claiming they were the reason he challenged and killed his brother.
Dad ultimately back tracked the way the pack was run allowing the old ways of abusing women and children to return. It kept the more rogue half of the pack from leaving. Unfortunately, the better half of the pack is made to suffer. So while the alliance still remains, the alpha of White Moon supports any Red Fang member coming to the territory for any help and support he can give. When he discovers severe abuse he will use White General as a way to get the wolf out of the territory. My understanding is that he has contact with three sanctuary packs located in New York but the details of how he moves them is unknown.”
“How do you know this?”
Alpha is in shock as I hang my head, ashamed that I didn’t approach the alpha before now with my own plans for leaving.
