Chapter 103

“I’m sorry, what!?” I shrieked, confused and in a state of disbelief. “You lied about my birthday? I’m only twenty-five, Mom what are you talking about? None of this makes sense!”
“I know sweetheart, I know... when I found out I was pregnant with you, I was so happy, I came home and immediately told your father. Neither of us could believe it, that’s when he told me about who he really was, where his family comes from. I thought he was nuts until he showed me what he could do, there was no denying it after that. He went to see his sisters, he wanted them to know about our little miracle because that’s what you were, but when he came back, he was devastated. He brought one of his sisters with him, and together they told me about the threat to your life, and the plan they had devised to protect you. Your father could stay until you were born, but then he would have to leave us under the protection of his sister. We stayed with her for six months, to be sure, during which time, she and your other aunts bound your powers. Once she was sure we were safe, your aunt bewitched the town, that’s why we moved here, it was small enough that if anyone new came I would know and could call her, in case they were there for you. It also didn’t take too much magic to convince people we had been here much longer than we actually had, or that you were older than you really were, allowing us to slip under the radar, so to speak. I was only to summon your aunts if you were in danger, but it never came, we had our hardships, like everyone, but we were safe and happy, for the most part, weren’t we?” She asked, I couldn’t speak, my mouth was completely dry, and the whole thing felt insane. I nodded and took a sip of my coffee, silently wondering if I hadn’t been right on the money when I thought I was in a mental hospital somewhere.
“So, what is she? What is her father? And why did you hope she would never meet me?” Daniel asked what I couldn’t, my world had shifted on its axis for the second time in only a few months.
“That’s complicated, and a long story, but I will tell you everything I promise, I just think my daughter needs a moment.” My mother smiled at Daniel, but it was full of sorrow, I realised I hadn’t said a thing.
“Why lie about my age?” I don’t know why I asked it, there were a million other questions floating around in my head, but it was the first thing to come out of my mouth.
“If it was discovered when your father was here, even a rough estimate, we needed to make sure anyone looking into it would think you were conceived long before he arrived. The best way to keep you safe was to make it appear that it was impossible for you to be his daughter. Your father held my hand, and your aunts delivered you, he got to stay for one day, to hold you and try and pour all the love he felt for you into that one day. Before he had to leave, but he promised he would be back, once you get your powers back, he will feel it too, having been a part of the spell, and will come back to me. He told me about a vision his sister had, of an Alpha, your mate, and of the many possible futures, if you met that man, and you marked each other before your birthday, you both would fight in the war that’s coming. So, every night I prayed you would never meet him, never get dragged into that fight, not because you won’t win, but because it will change you, my sweet girl, and the thought of that, was too much to bear.” My mother said with another sad smile.
“I don’t understand any of this,” I said quietly.
“I know, it’s a lot to process. But I did what I thought was best, I hope you understand one day and can forgive me.” My mother replied, which made me feel guilty for being upset with her, but I still couldn’t comprehend what it all meant.
“I’m sorry I’m still confused, what could be so bad that you would go through all of that to protect Charlie? And you still haven’t explained what she and her father are.” Daniel exclaimed, just as frustrated and confused as me.
“I know, I’m having a hard time knowing where to begin, it’s not an easy story to tell.” My mother replied.
“Just tell me what I am, and what my father is, please? I’ve had my world turned upside down so many times over the last couple of months, I just need the truth!” I cried, coming to the end of my rope. Daniel, sensing my distress, put his arm around me and pulled me closer, in an attempt to comfort me.
“Oh honey, I wish this wasn’t so upsetting for you, but it’s not that simple. It’s a long, complicated story, and I need to call my boss and tell him I won’t be in today. This isn’t something that can be over within half an hour.” My mother said as she got up and went into the kitchen.
“Can you believe her?” I shrieked to Daniel, once she was out of earshot. “First, she lies to me my entire life, and now that I finally know the truth, she is avoiding filling in the blanks!” I fumed.
“I don’t think it’s that simple, this seems to be a very difficult subject for her, besides, she hasn’t said she isn’t going to tell you, just that she is having a hard time explaining it all. Give her a chance, she is taking a day off work, and she has told us why she did what she did, that’s something. And despite your fears, she has been very encouraging about our relationship, even if she hoped we would never meet.” Daniel kissed me, forcing me to smile, in spite of my bad mood and frustration.
“How can you stay so calm? We still have no answers and time is running out! We need to get back to Hyacinth, and we still don’t know what I am, or what I’m capable of!” I cried as the panic crept back.
“We have hours before we have to leave, and your mother will tell us what we need to know as soon as she gets back, so take a deep breath,” he said as he inhaled with me, “and try to stay calm. We will find out everything we need to know soon enough. Please don’t upset yourself?” He asked as he rubbed my back.
“I just feel like every time I get a handle on something, the next thing comes along that takes me out at the knees. One more world-altering thing happens and I don’t think my sanity will take it!” I wailed, letting my dramatic side get the better of me, while Daniel struggled not to laugh at me.
“Baby, I know you’ve been through a lot lately, but don’t you think you’re being a little dramatic?” He asked between stifled chuckles.
“Yeah, yeah, I know, I just feel completely overwhelmed, and I want this all over with, and I need my mother to tell me the truth.” I grumbled.
“She will, soon, you just have to stay calm, and be patient,” Daniel replied, he had stopped laughing and got over the humour of the situation. My mother finally came back with the pot of coffee.
“Who needs a top-up?” She asked, which pushed me beyond my limit.
“Mom, I just need to know what I am, what dad is, and I need to know now. Some random guy called Pinchas turned up at Hyacinth’s, the witch queen’s house and told us the only way to avoid the entire world becoming a wasteland, is to come here and get information. We have to leave in a few hours to get back for a meeting with the other Alphas from the state, so we can prevent the vampires from taking over the other packs. And apparently, the fate of the entire planet is on my shoulders! So, please, just tell me, what the hell am I and how am I supposed to prevent the king of the vampires taking destroying the planet!?” I yelled, as I stood, I was freaking out completely, breathing heavily.
“Alright, I’m sorry, let’s sit down and I will tell you everything I know I promise, let’s just calm down.” My mother said as she held her hands up and talked to me like I was going to snap if she said the wrong thing.
“Your mother’s right baby, you really need to calm down. We will sort everything out, I promise, and the fate of the world isn’t just on your shoulders. We are in this together, and we will fight whatever comes next together too!” Daniel said softly, he kissed my cheek and encouraged me to sit back down.
“I’m sorry, you’re right, this has just been very stressful, and I’ve doubted my sanity so many times I honestly don’t know what’s real anymore!” I cried as I sank onto the ancient couch.
“Alright, alright, I guess I just have to start with the story your father told me to explain where he came from. It’s just not the easiest subject for me.” My mother said as she paced the small area between the coffee table and her chair, trying to find where to start.
