In The Beginning, Chapter 54

Daniel POV

I called Ben and told him what happened, and that we were cancelling the gathering until the wolves had healed. The new arrivals would join the pack tomorrow, after we had carried out Owen’s sentence. Pratt had started naming names since he heard about Owen execution date, his own was on hold as long as he continued to provide us with information. Ben alerted those that needed to be to cancel the event, and once the men were all accounted for, and injuries assessed I ran back to the house as fast as I could. I barrelled through the door, but when I got to the living room my legs nearly gave out. Charlie was white as a sheet, in the foetal position on the couch, Theia was sat on the floor in front of her, one hand on her head, the other on her heart. But the thing that scared me the most was how slow her heartbeat was, I had heard it that slow before. The air was forced out of my lungs as I nearly threw up where I stood, I stumbled into a chair, its wooden legs scraping the floor loudly, drawing Theia’s attention, she opened her eyes lazily, and squinted as she took me in.
“Is... is she...?” I couldn’t ask the question, too terrified of the answer.
“She will live Alpha.” Theia nodded her head, but she still seemed... drunk?
“The last time her heartbeat was this slow... it stopped.” I growled, if she risked Charlie’s life by getting drunk, I was going to kill her.
“Yes, but I have prevented that. She used all her energy, so I am replacing it with mine, but it's been so long since I did this, it is having a very strange effect on me? Or is it affect? The English language is very confusing, even reading the Internet has not helped much. Why would you have different dictionaries? With different rules for each? It is difficult to know which one is right. I do not think urban dictionary is correct, it is mostly disgusting.” She nodded to herself while I struggled to catch up.
“You are giving her your energy?” I asked struggling to comprehend, I felt like I’d just woken up and couldn’t focus properly.
“Yes, not to be mistaken with our power, she is teeming with that!” I lowered myself onto the chair as I struggled to understand.
“So, she has lots of power, but not enough energy? How do we increase her energy?” I asked.
“Hmm, I think I will need a metaphor, or a simile maybe?” She shook her head like she was trying to bat away the errant thought and I was shocked by how familiar it was. “Charlie is like a small child, today she tried to run a marathon, without any training, and at first it was lovely, and she was keeping up with the adults, and she was running, but then she hit a wall, and like the small child became dehydrated, exhausted and nearly had a cardiac event. But I stopped that with a magical IV, or a transfusion if you like, mine into her. I am trying to train her, so the next time she runs a marathon, she takes the gold and does not die. But I cannot do that overnight, it will take time. You have to help her be patient, she will build up her stamina, and her running muscles soon.” Theia laughed and Charlie’s heart rate finally started to climb. “Did she tell you what she did today, Alpha?” Theia leaned closer conspiratorially.
“You can call me Daniel, in private at least.” I gave her a half-hearted smile as Charlie regained a little colour in her cheeks, and I felt like I could finally breathe.
“She killed two vampires, attacked a third, healed a vampire bite, teleported, first herself then you, only to end the day by throwing yet another vampire like a children’s toy. Her stamina has improved greatly in such a short time? Has it not?” She grinned, lowering her arms and stretching them out. I jerked forward, waiting for an explanation, words failing me. Why wasn’t she working on Charlie anymore? Seeing or sensing my panic, she looked from me to Charlie, and just when I was going to throttle her or scream, she smiled. “I have given her enough for now, she will sleep for a long time.” Theia dragged out the word long to emphasise her point. “And when she wakes, she will need lots of food, all the food. I recommend liver, and vegetables smothered in cheese.” She giggled and tried to get up but fell on her bottom, the only time I hadn’t seen her looking graceful, and yet this Theia was just as irritating as the sober one. “I may need a glass of water before I can leave.” She said, looking sheepish. I moved closer to Charlie, brushed the hair off her face, even though she is always trying to hide behind it. I focused on her heartbeat again, reassuring myself that she was okay, I kissed her forehead, grateful I would get to spend another night with her in my arms. I went and got Theia a glass of water, allowing myself a moment to break down before I had to go be brave, for Charlie and the pack. I had barely spent five minutes with Charlie, before I heard tyres squeal outside, I left Theia, half of her water gone, now sitting in the lotus position with her eyes shut. As long as she doesn’t levitate, she could sit there all day, I thought as I went to see who had pulled up. I got to the front door as Ben and my father were about to crash through it, causing them to stop quickly and almost trip over each other. I gave them a questioning look, before walking back inside. Leaving Theia to do, whatever she was doing I led them into the kitchen.
“Is your mother back with Maria yet?” My father, hurriedly asked as I headed for the coffee machine, I needed caffeine.
“No, not yet, but Bailey and Kyle are with them.” I replied as I focused on the beans.
“Your mother, she linked me, she was in so much pain. It... it sounded like...” I recognised the crazed look in his eyes then.
“She’s alive! I would have felt it if she died, so would you, she’s not dead.” I dropped what I was doing as something Theia said tried to crawl through the fog my brain was trapped inside. I ran into the living room. “Theia? Theia!” I whisper yelled at her, trying not to wake Charlie, but not wanting to touch a goddess without permission. She opened her eyes, which seemed a little clearer than earlier.
“Yes, Daniel?” She asked with an innocent smile that unnerved me to no end.
“You went to the bridal store, where Charlie was before she teleported to me?” I asked her, trying to be a precise as I could.
“Yes.” She replied succinctly.
“Was my mother there? Was she alive?” I asked, but it was impossible for her not to be, at least that was what I told myself.
“Yes, she was bitten by one of the vampires, but Charlie healed her.” She said smiling, she brushed Charlie’s hair off her shoulder affectionately.
“Whoa, can’t wait to see that next time Mom's a bitch to Charlie, she could hold this over her head forever!” Ben muttered, earning himself a death glare from me, and a smack from our father.
“Your mother cares about Charlie, but she knows how tough being a Luna, being a leader is, she was worried it would break Charlie, to have to punish people? That’s not in Charlie’s nature! Your mother saw that the first time she laid eyes on her. I may not agree with her methods, and Goddess knows she doesn’t give affection freely, but she cares.” My father snapped, storming away before he threw a punch in Ben's direction.
“What does he mean by “next time Mom's a bitch" Daniel?” Theia asked, a hint of anger in her tone.
“My mother has, in the past expressed concerns, just like you did, about our compatibility. But like my father said, she cares about Charlie, can you say the same about me?” I knew the answer, but I didn’t care.
“Despite my better judgement, I am starting to.” She shot me a sly grin, and I was shocked, I sat with Charlie for a little longer, until I heard another car pull up. It was quite comical to watch my brother and father race through the house, shoving each other out of the way to get to and out of the door first. They each ran outside, eager to embrace their mates, my mother’s usual pristine exterior gone, she looked like she had been in a bar fight. Her white blazer and wide legged pants were torn, stained and bloody, her makeup smeared by tears, her hair half falling out of its regular style. Maria was also bloodied, her clothes torn, her hair a little wilder than usual, but she seemed to have fared slightly better.
“Miranda, what happened?” My father asked my slightly dazed mother as he held her to his chest.
“Fucking vampires, said he was Asclepius, but that’s a famous healer. That thing, was a common thug, a bully, and his skanky daughters were too.” She began ranting, before she broke down. “I thought... I- I... and then...” She pointed at me, and began sobbing, hysterically, she grabbed onto me, and nearly collapsed. I carried her inside, my father trailing behind fussing over her, and clearly unhappy anyone but him was carrying her, but fighting it, and placed her on the couch by Charlie, while Theia watched us intently.
“A surge of adrenaline after such a shock can leave the body drained.” She said sympathetically, forcing a chuckle from my lips.
“I’m making coffee, who wants one?” I asked, indicating for Bailey and Kyle to follow me, Ben and Maria were still outside, probably still sucking face.
“Yes, I’ll take one.” My father said in a small, unsure voice that was odd coming from him. I watched him kiss my mother’s cheek, and then Charlie’s, as he sank down on the floor between their heads. I tried to remain calm, as I left my father to his vigil. I headed for the coffee machine again, this time my need was purely to prevent me attacking the men before they had answered my questions.
