Chapter 74

Daniel POV

We drove straight to the hospital, I needed to see Kyle, to make sure he was getting the best care possible and reassure him that his family would be taken care of. Before I went to make Owen pay for the pain and suffering, he had inflicted on everyone. I stormed into the hospital, in no mood to be stopped or questioned, my alpha aura rolling off me warning anyone in my path to stay clear.
“Kyle Henry’s room, now,” I demanded of the receptionist.
“Yes, Alpha.” She said as she began typing furiously on her keyboard. “Room 346, third floor, take a left from the elevator, it’s one of the last rooms on the left side of the hall.” She squeaked as she rushed through everything. I didn’t wait for her to finish before I headed for the bank of elevators behind her, Ben was hot on my heels. The doors opened a few seconds after I pressed the button, thankfully it was empty, so I pressed the button for our floor and growled in frustration at how long it took for us to start moving.
“How’s Maria doing? Kyle, he’s family, right?” I asked Ben, as I attempted to defuse my own temper.
“They’re cousins, but they were raised like siblings. His mother, her aunt, adopted her when she was a pup.” Ben said quietly, his grief was obvious to anyone who knew him.
“Are you up to this?” I asked him, concerned.
“No one is more motivated than me to make anyone and everyone responsible suffer for this.” He replied through gritted teeth, but I could tell his anger was his way of masking his pain. The elevator finally stopped, and the doors opened, I strode out determined to do everything I could for Maria, Ben and Kyle. It took us only a few seconds to find the right room, I entered without knocking, determined to see Kyle as quickly as possible. The room was full, many of the men I recognised as warriors, and there were three females I also recognised from Ben and Maria’s wedding. Kyle was lying on the bed unconscious, he looked deathly ill, so pale he was grey. I stepped further into the room; the crowd parted to allow me to reach the bed.
“I should have been here sooner, how is he doing?” I asked no one in particular.
“Not good, Ben already told us he hadn’t told you. I know it was against protocol or whatever, but you couldn’t have helped anyway.” Evie, Maria and Kyle’s mother said softly, her one hand clutched her son’s, the other stroked his hair. She couldn’t take her eyes off his face, it felt like she was trying to memorise it before he was gone.
“Is there anything I can do? I could have food sent here, or coffee?” I sounded ridiculous even to myself.
“Thank you, Alpha, but it’s not necessary,” Evie said again without taking her eyes off her son. “When is Maria coming back?” She asked Ben, surprising me.
“She is with the Alpha’s mate until we return from finding out everyone who was involved in bringing the vampires here and bringing them to justice,” Ben replied like he was making her an oath.
“I’m going to go find a doctor and contact a few people, I wanna find out if there’s anything we haven’t tried, a treatment we haven’t heard of, anything,” I stated with conviction, I turned to leave the room when I heard Kyle cough.
“Alpha?” He asked weakly and a little confused. I took a breath before I turned around, I had never lost a member of the pack before, and it was affecting me more than I thought it would.
“I heard someone was a hero, just wanted to check up on you and your family, see if you needed anything. And to personally thank you, first for protecting my mate, then protecting your fellow warriors in the attempted jailbreak. I will do everything in my power to heal you, but if I can’t, I will make everyone involved in hurting you pay.” I stated, I was genuinely grateful to him, and I wanted him to know that.
“Just promise me my family will be looked after when I’m gone?” He croaked, I could tell he was in pain, but he was trying to hide it from his loved ones.
“Of course, you never have to worry about that. None of you do.” I said to the room, I didn’t want anyone thinking that if they got hurt working for the pack their families wouldn’t be cared for. “I’m going to talk to the doctor, I’m not giving up yet,” I told him and turned back towards the door.
“Alpha?” Kyle asked, softly and a little nervously, I turned back. “Would it be alright if the Luna came by? I would like to say goodbye to her... if that’s alright with you?” I could feel the jealousy threatening to overtake me, but I pushed it back.
“I will bring her here later today, I still have to go to the cells and interrogate Owen, but I will make sure you get to see her,” I replied, this time when I headed for the door no one stopped me. It didn’t take me long to find a doctor, while I frantically wrote emails, to anyone I could think of who could know anything about vampire toxin, including Hyacinth. “Doc, what’s the news on Kyle Henry in 346, the vampire bite?” I asked the man, whose name I couldn’t place, as he came down the hall.
“I’m sorry Alpha, but I can’t discuss a patient's condition with anyone without their permission.” He had the nerve to say to me.
“I could just command you to tell me, you know. Or you could just tell me if there is anything you haven’t tried yet. Anything that’s too expensive, or experimental, or even a Hail Mary. I will pay, I will approve it, I will get you whatever you need to help him, just tell me what it is, and I’ll make it happen.” I replied through gritted teeth.
“I’m sorry, there isn’t anything else we could try, there is no cure for a vampire bite.” He said earnestly. I wanted to punch something, I was so angry and frustrated.
“There has to be something!” I almost begged him.
“I’m sorry Alpha, we just don’t know enough about vampires and their toxins. Even if I could get my hands on some of the toxin, in its pure form, it would take months, years maybe before we had a workable antitoxin. Kyle has less than a day, I doubt he would be conscious by this evening, he’s burning through the morphine at an alarming rate. It’s not a good sign, and it concerns me.” He explained sadly.
“Okay, thanks anyway doc, I’m still gonna see what I can find through my contacts though, maybe someone, somewhere knows something that will help,” I replied dejectedly as I walked back to the room. When I got to the door a few of the warriors were leaving, I waited until they were out of the room before I went inside, I allowed them to pass by me on their way to the elevators. Kyle was unconscious when I got back, his mother hadn’t moved an inch, and his sisters were on the opposite side of the bed, holding each other and watching their mother drown in her grief. Ben had taken one of the empty seats left by the warriors, close to the door, he was typing on his phone, and I could feel the anxiety radiating off of him. “What’s wrong?” I linked him, knowing something was up and hoping by keeping it private he would confide in me.
“Maria hasn’t got back to me, I’ve texted her five times and nothing, she hasn’t even read them. And whenever I try linking her it’s like she’s asleep, which is freaking me out.” He replied, I could almost feel the panic through the link.
“Okay, let’s not worry just yet. I’ll text Charlie, you link one of the warriors doing a patrol of the grounds, someone mated, and have him check on the girls.” I responded, as I pulled my phone back out and shot Charlie a text. “Hey beautiful, how are things with you and Maria? Hit me back, Ben is freaking out because she isn’t replying to his texts. I know you’re still mad and I get that, but please let me know you’re safe. Love you.” I looked up at Ben, but he was still linked to the warrior, probably keeping it open until he had eyes on the girls. Suddenly he scowled, something had pissed him off, but he was still linked, and my phone dinged with a reply from Charlie.
“Hey dadddy, Maria had a little toooo much to drinj and passed out on the couch. She’s find and your soldiere person made me a snadwich. But dont worry i didny drink as mch as she did. Lobe you too, stikk pissed at yo for not telling me stuff though. Seem you later xxxx” I stared at the text for a few moments, as I tried to rein in my wolf who wanted nothing more than to shift and run home to check on her. Ben’s voice in my head was the only thing that stopped me.
“I sent Robert to the house.” Robert was one of our oldest warriors, he was close to ageing out of the Zetas, he mostly ran the trainee programme but still ran the occasional patrol with the new graduates. “Maria is passed out drunk on the couch, he said it looks like she drank a bottle and a half of whiskey. Charlie is drunk off her ass, but she had a hell of a lot less than Maria, so she’s safe. Robert made her a sandwich and made her drink a shit ton of water before he left, so she should be fine. But I never should have left her at the house, I knew she wasn’t coping with what’s happened to Kyle. I should’ve known she would go off the rails like this.” He was beating himself up pretty badly.
“Do you want to go back? Mom and Dad are meeting me at the cells, you don’t need to be there if you feel like Maria needs you more.” I offered.
“No, no, I’m gonna let her sleep it off, we can both go there in a few hours, pick them up and bring them here, provided they’re sober enough by then.” He replied dejectedly.
“Okay, I don’t think there’s a lot we can do here, I think we should head over and try and get Owen to talk, maybe Pratt or someone else with a link to the vampires will know something that will help Kyle.” I knew I was grasping at straws, but I needed something to hold onto.
“Yeah, you’re right, let’s go get some answers from that asshole,” Ben replied.
