Chapter 79

Daniel walked off the elevator behind me and indicated with his hand where to go. He had a face like thunder, but I wasn’t in the wrong and I had to think about Kyle, not Daniel. So, I straightened my back and knocked on the door Daniel had pointed to. An extremely tall and broad man opened the door, I stepped back instinctually, a little intimidated. Daniel was maybe 6’2, this guy had to be 6’6 or taller, which made my 5’5 frame childlike next to his. He was broader than the door, I had the mental picture of him entering every room sideways, and I had to struggle not to giggle, my anxiety was getting the better of me.
“Alpha, Kyle has been asking if you were coming back.” He addressed Daniel, bowing slightly.
“It’s been good of you all to be here for the family, but do you think you could give us a moment? Kyle asked to see his future Luna before it’s too late and I would like there to be as few distractions as possible.” Daniel replied.
“Yes Alpha, we will go pick up some food and coffee for the family, although we haven’t been able to get Mrs Henry to eat anything yet.” He replied he signalled the other men in the room, and they quietly and respectfully left. I watched them head to the elevators, but the man Daniel called Bailey, moved back into the room. I followed him in after the last man had left, looking around the doorway at the large hospital room, which had a dozen chairs brought in to line the walls. I watched Bailey move around the bed and kiss a woman who looked remarkably like Maria, before excusing them both, and leaving, her hand securely in his. When they had left, it was just, a young girl, a woman, I assumed was Kyle’s mother, Maria and Ben. Maria immediately came over and kissed my cheek.
“I would like to introduce you to my mother Evie, and my sister Josie, and that was Isabella who left with her mate Bailey. Kyle is in and out of consciousness, but the doctor said soon he won’t be able to wake up at all, it’s just waiting until the end then after that.” She sniffed, her eyes glued to the bed where Kyle lay, he was so pale, it didn’t look like he had long left. Maria encouraged her youngest sibling, Josie to move away from the bed and towards her. “Let Charlie get in there; Kyle will want to see her if he wakes up.”
“Oh, no please, I can wait over in one of the other chairs, you’re family, you should be around him right now.” I shook my head and almost begged the now confused-looking girl to sit back down.
“Luna, please sit, he asks about you every time he wakes up. I think he wants to say goodbye before it’s too late, and as he won’t make it to your Luna ceremony, he wants to accept you into the pack now, it’s important to him.” Evie, explained, tearing her eyes away from her son to look deep into mine. “He was right about you.” She said softly and with a smile, before she resumed her vigil at her son’s side, her eyes glued to his face.
“He... he talked about me?” I asked, unsure of what to do.
“He said you were kind and selfless, and you would make a good Luna because you care about other people. He said you have a giving heart, open and accepting, and he wanted to be put forward as your guard after your ceremony. But maybe he wanted to tell you that himself, I’m not sure anymore I’m sorry, I haven’t been able to sleep or leave his side since he was brought here.” She said sadly, and almost to herself, but I could see the toll this tragedy had taken on her, I could see it in her posture, and eyes, how tired she was.
“Your son was very kind to me, he protected me, and he gave me the impression he was the kind of person who whenever someone needed help, would be the first to volunteer.” His mother nodded, as she smiled and fought back tears.
“That is exactly what he is like.” She nodded as the tears flowed down her cheeks.
“Then please forgive me, but without a moment’s rest, or even something to eat or drink, what do you think he would say to you now if he wasn’t in this bed?” I asked softly, she let out a sigh and reached across the bed to grip my hand in hers.
“He would tell me to eat, drink and rest for a moment, he would force me to take a break, and look after myself for his sisters.” She admitted with a nod.
“Well, then don’t you think you should do that? And I can stay here, I will have the Alpha link you if he wakes up, or if you don’t want to leave the room, I’m sure Ben would go get you a coffee and a sandwich and you could just rest your eyes until he gets back. If Kyle wakes up, I will make sure I get you, you won’t miss a thing.” I offered, she nodded and slowly tried to stand from the seat she had been in for hours. Maria ran towards her and helped her move to one of the armchairs in the centre of the room, Evie, almost passed out as soon as she sat down, her mind and body clearly exhausted. I watched Ben kiss his wife as he left the room, Maria turned to me like I had performed a miracle and mouthed thank you to me. I shrugged, feeling a little self-conscious and like I had done very little, and turned my attention back to Kyle. I could feel Daniel’s eyes on me, which just made me angry, he was the one who told me Kyle wanted to see me. I pushed my thoughts of Daniel aside as I waited patiently and carefully watched Kyle’s face for any indications he would wake up.
After an hour of waiting for Kyle to regain consciousness, keeping my post at his bed for his mother, who had thankfully slept the entire time, I was beginning to lose hope he would ever open his eyes again. I kept my hand on him as I straightened my back, stretching the aching muscles, rolling my neck and shoulders in a lame attempt at loosening the tight feeling in my back. Daniel got up, sensing my discomfort, he made his way to the seat next to me.
“If it's hurting you to stay, maybe we could go for a short walk, or you could just get up and move around the room a little.” He offered.
“I’m not moving until he wakes up or that heart monitor changes its pace and I have to wake his mother to tell her it’s time to say goodbye.” I bit back icily. Daniel growled lowly and got up, he turned back to say something to me but stared at the bed instead.
“I really hope whatever’s going on here has nothing to do with me.” Kyle smiled weakly and looked me in the eye without blushing, I would've given a hell of a lot to see him blush at that moment.
“Daniel, wake Evie,” I instructed as Kyle struggled to focus his eyes on me.
“I wanted to see you before I go because I want to welcome you to the pack, I won’t get to at your Luna ceremony, but I want to go knowing this pack has the best people leading it.” Kyle hoarsely explained.
“Thank you, Kyle, that means a lot to me,” I whispered back to him, even though I’m sure everyone heard us, they continued to pretend they couldn’t. “But I don’t know how.” I smiled.
“That's okay, I can teach you, but I'm afraid you will have to come to me.” He feebly tried to lift his arm but had to settle with dragging it across the bed without the strength to lift it. “You put your forehead to mine.” He whispered, his voice failing him. And then in a voice so low, it must have been only for me, he said. “I Kyle Henry, Eta of the Applewood pack, accept you as my Luna.” Before he let out a long-strangled breath, and his eyes closed, the monitors started beeping, Evie started screaming and crying as her son appeared to succumb to his injuries. I felt the anger at what had happened to Kyle and the despair of his death drown me, the familiar feeling of the power within me built and I didn’t stop it, in my grief and rage, I embraced it, hoping it would allow me to punish those responsible for killing this poor boy, and make them suffer. I felt the warmth, and the allure of the power grow in my chest, moving out to my fingers permeating my skin with its addictive high. It was in that second, I realised I was still holding Kyle’s hand, I tried to drop it as a current shot through my chest, but it made me grab his hand tighter. I felt it run along the arm holding Kyle and through my fingers into his body. I watched horrified as the air around me crackled with electricity, and Kyle’s machines started screaming at me, his blood pressure and pulse through the roof. I watched frozen as the doctors and nurses tried to get to him, only to be shocked by the electrified air around us both. Kyle took one long gulping breath, and everything stopped, his heart rate dropped to zero, before the machine blew up, and the electrical energy that had surrounded us dissipated. The power had disappeared back inside me, wherever it went when I wasn’t emotionally unbalanced, and the room was quiet except for Evie's sobs.
