Chapter 80
Daniel ran towards me the moment the barrier of energy between us dissipated, he checked me for injuries and led me away from the bed as the doctors and nurses rushed around us to check on Kyle. I got to the foot of the bed before I heard him cough like he was choking, I spun around hoping he was still alive. Kyle sat bolt upright on the bed, took another deep gulping breath and vomited a black sticky tar-like substance everywhere. When he finished, he leaned back against his pillows and there seemed to be more colour in his cheeks.
“Could I get a drink of water, whatever that was tasted foul!” I heard Kyle ask a nurse and I broke down crying laughing, I was so relieved. I felt Evie, come up beside me, she was also crying, laughing, and thanking the goddess over and over. The nurses promptly kicked us out of the room to change the bed, the patient and his machines. All of us were so relieved and overwhelmed we obeyed without question and filed out of the room quietly. Nobody talked as we waited in the hallway, the nurses signalled that we could enter as they wheeled the broken equipment out, and once again we filed into the room. Kyle was sat up in the bed, drinking a cup of water, his colour almost completely returned.
“How is this possible?” Evie asked as she approached her son, her hand cupped his face, she was still crying with joy. Kyle looked at me, his mother followed his gaze, and then everyone was looking at me.
“Oh, no, no, no. This wasn’t me; I can’t do anything like that, tell them, Daniel.” I nudged him, but he was lost in thought.
“Your eyes were purple. Like after the dream, and every time you’ve used your powers.” He said quietly.
“Yeah but, that doesn’t mean anything! I don’t have the power to do whatever the hell that was!” I was almost laughing at the absurdity of it.
“I felt it, whatever it was came from your hand,” Kyle said softly, Evie, got off the bed and came over to me, she paused for a second before she threw her arms around me and sobbed onto my shoulder. I stoked her back softly, until she pulled away from me, kissed both of my cheeks, and placed her forehead against mine.
“I, Evelyn Henry, Omega of the Applewood pack, accept you as my Luna.” She said loud enough for everyone to hear before she bowed low. When she stood, she took my hands in hers. “Thank you for giving me back my little boy.” She sobbed, then left me to return to her son’s bedside, I looked to Daniel and Maria for help, completely confused.
“No one else in the pack can find out what happened here today, we need to come up with a cover story,” Daniel said which shocked me further.
“What about Hyacinth?” Ben suddenly jumped in, I felt like the room was spinning, everything was happening way too fast.
“Say she sent someone who had dealt with vampire bites before?” Daniel asked him.
“Or she sent you something she said would work?” Ben replied.
“Would that work? What about the time it would take to get here?” Daniel countered.
“No one but you knows where she is and even if they did none of us knows squat about how their magic works, maybe the seer has some idea, but how would she know if Hyacinth could teleport stuff or not? You don’t have to be that specific!” Ben snapped back sarcastically, which made me double over laughing.
“It’s okay baby, we will work it out, right Ben?” Daniel was talking softly to me, like I had snapped, but biting at Ben like he thought he could make it all right if he could convince me he was in control. I looked around the room, at Maria’s family members, who were all staring at me. It was like Daniel had only just remembered they were in the room. “You wouldn't say anything to anyone, right? We can trust you to protect your Luna, especially after she just saved you.” Daniel was advancing on the bed menacingly, I grabbed his arm I wasn’t sure of the lengths he would go to, to protect me, but I knew he would at the very least command them never to talk about it again, and strip them of their free will. He scowled at me as he whipped around to face me, I touched his cheek, softly.
“You don’t have to threaten or command them. They will keep my secret, won’t you?” I asked a little louder but kept my eyes on Daniel’s, my hands caressed his skin.
“Of course, we will,” Evie said straight away, she seemed a little offended at the implication she wouldn’t.
“You didn’t have to ask Alpha; we were on board the second you said it goes no further,” Kyle said, his voice strong and serious.
“I’d be more worried about the doctors or nurses saying something, they all saw whatever that was that kept everyone away from Charlie and Kyle,” Maria said as if she had only just found her voice.
“I’ll talk to them now, start spreading the story that Hyacinth sent something to help, but a Lycan couldn’t administer it, so Charlie volunteered. Is everyone clear on the story?” Daniel asked, everyone in the room except me nodded, I felt like I was losing my mind. He left the room without looking back, presumably to find the hospital staff. I felt a pair of hands gently guide me to a seat, I didn’t realise it was Maria until I was sat down, and she was kneeling in front of me.
“Hey, Charlie? How are you doing? You, okay?” She asked me concerned.
“It doesn’t make sense.” I heard myself say as the room continued to observe me, Kyle, Evie, and Josie between happy glances at each other looked at me with awe and respect, while Ben looked terrified of what I would accidentally do next. I felt petrified, if I was capable of bringing someone back from the brink of certain death, what else could I be capable of? More than anything, at that exact moment I wanted answers about what I was, and what my unknown powers could do. When Daniel returned the room was still uncomfortably quiet, Evie and Josie, were still hugging Kyle and each other, overjoyed at his recovery. But, Maria, Ben and I were decidedly less enthusiastic, concern was evident on everyone’s faces until Daniel was almost shoved out of the way by Kyle’s sister Isabella. We quickly pulled ourselves together and joined in on the excitement and many, many hugs of the miracle recovery. I allowed Daniel to tell the story of what happened, excusing myself after Isabelle had thanked me so many times the words began to sound like gibberish. I slipped out of the room, breathing heavily as the panic overwhelmed me, Daniel, who had followed me out, wrapped his arms around me.
“Are you alright?” He asked softly, he looked around to make sure no one could hear us.
“It’s just a lot. It’s a little overwhelming.” I whispered.
“We could go home, leave them to celebrate.” Daniel offered; he kissed my hair as he held me.
“Yes please,” I whispered back as I leaned into him, I felt suddenly exhausted, he kissed me again, and ran back to the room to say goodnight.
After Daniel and Charlie left the hospital, the doctor came around and agreed that Kyle’s vitals looked good enough for him to go home the next day. Evie and Kyle insisted everyone went home for the night and they could pick the mother and son up in the morning. Once they were alone, Kyle couldn't wait any longer to ask his mother the question that had been burning within him since he awoke.
“Is she? You saw right? Is it her?” He asked, mindful of anyone listening in but desperate to know the truth.
“I think so. Her eyes, they matched the stories, it’s possible.” His mother said as she paced, she wrung her hands with anxiety.
“So, does that mean it’s time? The Ritual?” Kyle asked, getting excited.
“I’m not certain, and I don’t want to waste my only chance by getting it wrong.” Evie snapped; she was obviously scared.
“Mom, would it really be that bad if she is?” Kyle asked, he was suddenly worried for the young woman he had come to care about.
“It would be bad if she’s not and I call him forth, but it would be just as bad to not do the ritual and later find out she is the one he’s been looking for.” She said as she grew visibly more agitated.
“Is there anyone else we can ask? A cousin or uncle, anyone who was told the stories?” Kyle asked, clutching at straws.
“Maybe... maybe there is, but we will have to move quickly, or we could be too late. But I refuse to expose any of us until we know one way or another.” Evie mumbled, as she rifled through her purse, a thought occurred to her that stopped her abruptly. “You, you didn’t get hurt on purpose, did you?” She asked, quietly.
“No, of course not, I saw the vamp going for Bailey and I jumped, I didn’t think. And everyone calling me a hero just made me feel like more of a fraud.” Kyle replied glumly.
“Alright, good. Because nothing is worth your life, you know that right?” She asked him, seriously, and he saw the effect the last few days had had on his mother.
“I know... I did wonder, for a moment if my death might trigger something, but that was when the Alpha showed up without her, not a second before, I promise.” Kyle admitted guiltily.
“I had the same thought baby.” She smiled at her son and prayed to the goddess she didn’t make the wrong choice and accidentally destroy her own family or the pack before she pulled her phone out of her bag and called the one person she vowed never to speak to again.
