Chapter 42
Charlie POV
Daniel let me cry myself out, then he wrapped me in his robe and took me downstairs so we could have some tea. I was still sniffling and didn’t know what to tell him. If I told him the truth, would he think I was crazy or a drama queen? Who got so upset over a dream? Well, dreams that didn’t involve your imaginary lover who turned out to be real. We were down the rabbit hole, maybe I should just tell him, I thought to myself. Completely confused and without knowing what else to do, I steeled myself for a crazy conversion. He made us tea and lit the fire; he cuddled me into him on the couch.
“You ready to tell me what happened?” He asked gently.
“I must have drifted off waiting for you to come back, and I had this intense, scary, horrible dream. You were hurt and it was just crazy. Maybe it’s a stress reaction to everything? None of it made sense, it was just a bad dream, right?” I asked, scared of his answer.
“I’m not sure. I think... I think maybe you’re not completely human. Maybe your dad was something else, not Lycan but there are other races. Your eyes, they were purple. I’ve never seen or heard of that before. We have a seer and I’ve met a few witches, who had the sight, but it was never like that. I was scared for you.” He confessed, as he softly stroked my arm, he held me against him. I thought back to what the woman had said, it couldn’t be a coincidence that she had violet eyes and then so did I.
“There was a woman, in my dream, she had violet eyes...” I took a deep breath, in for a penny, I thought. “She told me to tell you some things, things that didn’t make sense to me, so I hope you understand it.” Please understand it, I thought as I took another breath and closed my eyes to focus on her words. “She told me, you needed to warn the other covens and packs? That there are coups happening everywhere. That you need to warn them. She said the future was uncertain and we could change it and she said you need to go see Hyacinth, that you would know how to proceed?” I didn’t tell him she told me to complete the mating bond, I wasn’t sure I was ready for that. I had only just gotten him to back off the idea of us getting engaged. “Oh, she said she would come back once I knew who I was, I have no idea what that meant.” He looked at me for a few moments without saying anything.
“Okay, I need to get Ben here, we need to talk to the other Alphas, maybe even call a meeting of all the packs in the state. And then you and I need to go see Hyacinth, together.” I stared at him, confused and filled with dread; he was speaking calmly but I could tell he was worried.
“Alright, but who’s Hyacinth?” I asked.
“She’s... um, well, she’s kinda Queen of the witches.” He admitted hesitantly. I burst out laughing, it was insane.
“Queen of the witches, the witches have a queen! Of course, they do. Anything else I need to know?” I was suspended between terror I had completely lost my mind and terror that I was being dragged into something I was never going to understand or be a part of. I felt tiny and insignificant, completely out of my depth, I felt like I was utterly ignorant of the world I lived in, and of the species that occupied it. There was a whole other side to it I had never known about, it was petrifying.
“Let’s just take this one step at a time, okay? Once Ben gets here, we will make a plan and go from there, alright? It’s okay, everything will be fine, I promise.” He kissed me softly and stroked my arms in an attempt to calm me.
“Ben is on his way? How?” I asked. He hadn’t called him.
“I mind-linked him.” He smiled. “He should be here in a few minutes.” I looked down at the satin nightie I was wearing, Daniel looked at it too. He made a low groaning sound.
“I should go change before he gets here.” He nodded; his sweatpants had an obvious tent. I smiled and pecked his cheek; he was so adorable when he was embarrassed. I ran up the stairs and quickly threw on the yoga pants Daniel had got for me and an oversized hooded sweater I had brought with me. I ran into the bathroom and gathered my hair up into a messy bun. By the time I walked back downstairs Daniel had moved into the kitchen. I heard a knock at the door so I headed towards it, I realised it looked different to the last time I was here, but decided it was something I could wait to ask about. I opened the door and found Ben and Maria on the other side, both looked worried.
“Hi, sorry it’s so late but Daniel felt it couldn’t wait,” I explained as I stepped aside for them to enter. “I didn’t know he asked you too,” I said to Maria, as she walked in after her husband.
“Actually, he only asked for me, but I felt Maria could be useful and Daniel needs to talk to her about something else anyway,” Ben explained, his eyes on the floor. I was about to tell them to go into the kitchen when Daniel appeared in the doorframe. He shot Ben a look I couldn’t decipher, rolled his eyes and indicated with his head for them to follow him.
“Hey, Cabron, you’re lucky any of us are here so don’t go throwing attitude!” Maria snapped at Daniel as we walked into the kitchen single file. Daniel had the kettle on the stove and a bottle of scotch on the table.
“Tea, or something stronger?” He asked, looking at all three of us and ignoring what Maria had said.
“I’ll have some tea please, but I may need something stronger after you’ve told us why we had to come here in the middle of the night!” Maria said as she sat down at the dining table, I took the seat opposite her. Daniel got four cups down and made the tea while Ben got four glasses out of a wooden drinks cabinet. He took the ice bucket to the freezer and filled it adding it to the table. Daniel brought a sugar bowl over and a chopping board before he got some lemons and limes and a knife. Once everything was ready and everyone had a cup of tea in front of them, he finally sat down next to me and squeezed my hand reassuringly.
“When I came home tonight, from the meeting, Charlie had some sort of vision.” He informed Ben and Maria whose eyes both snapped to me. “What she saw, is relevant to the information Ben provided at the meeting.” He squeezed my hand again, to encourage me to tell them what I saw.
“I don’t know that it was a vision, it might have just been a dream.” I proffered, still somewhat sceptical. Ben, leaned in closer and Daniel put his arm around me, a little possessive. It was clear he had still not forgiven his brother and was uncomfortable having him so close.
“Could it be like the dreams you had of Daniel?” He asked, curious. I could see the gears of his mind turning as he attempted to work out how I could be receiving such dreams.
“I’m not sure, the dreams of Daniel were all in real places, this was something else. It was a wasteland, barren and dead, I didn’t recognise anything there. I only know it was some sort of valley, there were hills on either side, and I was on the valley floor. But I only recognised Daniel, no one else.” I explained, suddenly feeling tired and confused.
“Okay, just tell us everything from the beginning and we will decide if it’s a dream or if it’s something more, okay? Let’s just talk?” Maria soothed me; she held my hand to calm me down. I took a deep breath.
“It’s crazy, I was in the valley, and I heard screams, so I hid, but then I saw a woman with red hair riding Daniel’s wolf holding a big... stick with a crystal on the end of it.” I looked at all three of them. “See, crazy!” I huffed, I felt like everything had all been blown out of proportion.
“The redhead was riding me?” Daniel asked incredulously.
“Yeah, which is nuts right?” I asked, certain none of what I saw meant anything
“What happened next?” Ben asked, his eyes locked with Daniel.
“She blasted whatever was chasing them with some sort of energy bomb from the stick.” I sighed exasperated. “Then she shot lightning into the sky and an army of wolves and supermodels came over one side of the valley, led by the woman with the violet eyes.”
“What did the redhead look like?” Daniel asked with a curious expression on his face.
“She was in her forties I’d guess, with a streak of white in her hair. I couldn’t see more than that I was too far away.” Daniel leant back in his chair; his brow furrowed.
“That sounds like Hyacinth.” He muttered and I felt myself get lightheaded.
