Chapter 50

“Yes, because God forbid, I be a mere lowly human! We wouldn’t want your precious bloodline tainted by that would we?” I barked at her, as I got up from my seat. “Except I don’t give a rat’s ass about my father, or his family and I want nothing to do with them. So, if all you want is for me to flaunt my otherness from whatever the hell he is, you’ve got another thing coming!” I felt something familiar build inside me the angrier I got. “And I don’t give a shit if you don’t think I’m good enough for you son. If anything after everything he’s put me through and the vile, elitist bullshit that you have spewed non-stop since you got here, neither of you are good enough for me! So, you can shove your bloodline up your ass for all I care!” I screamed as I grabbed my coat. “Thank you for the coffee, Maria, but I’m leaving,” I said to her softly before I stormed out of the front door, it slammed shut behind me. I pulled out my phone as I headed down the path, I needed to get a ride home. But first I needed to put some distance between myself and that woman. I felt a tear roll down my cheek as I thought about Daniel, but I couldn’t join a family that despised me and my mother, just because of our DNA. I decided to head towards the pack house, I needed to get my stuff and I could order a car from there. So, head held high, I started to walk in that direction.

Daniel POV

I had never heard anyone go off on my mother the way Charlie did, I was too shocked to move, even when she slammed the front door. I watched her storm down the path, she paused for a moment and then took off back down the road we had driven up. I was jolted back to my body when I heard laughter. I turned back to the table to see my mother’s beet-red face, and Maria, weak from laughter. My father had the biggest smile on his face as he looked at me.
“What are you waiting for son? Get after her, she’s going to make one hell of a Luna!” He chuckled, it was like my senses suddenly returned and I bolted out of the door after her. I couldn’t believe she had gone off like that, I had never seen her so angry before. I was the hot head, she was the calm and collected one, but she had let my mother have it with both barrels and I was oddly proud of her. I caught up with her after a few minutes, she was already halfway down the block, striding with purpose. Goddess her ass looked amazing in those jeans, I tried to pull myself out of my dirty thoughts. I needed to think of something to say to her, to convince her to give my family and me another chance. I just had no idea what that was. We also had to talk about what happened, I couldn’t have been the only one there to notice. When she got angry, she developed an aura, it wasn’t like my Alpha one, but something else. I could tell it was powerful though, it was enough to make my mother submit and not argue back, which is something I had never seen. I would’ve expected my mother’s wolf to attack Charlie, she would have if anyone else had yelled at her like that. I grabbed her arm gently, to make her stop, but when she turned around, she had tears streaming down her face. It felt like she hadn’t gone a day since she met me without crying. It made my heart constrict painfully.
“I’m sorry Daniel but this isn’t going to work. I can’t be with you if your mother hates me for something I can’t change. I don’t care what my father is, I don’t want to be like him. I’ve lived as a human for twenty-six years; I just want to go back to that.” She said between sobs.
“I don’t care what you are, as long as you’re with me!” I told her, as I begged her to stay. “Say the word and I will banish my mother, or we will leave the pack to Ben and Maria and start over somewhere else, anywhere you want. We can start a new company, one that is focused solely on your designs. I will do anything for you, just say the word.” I swore to her, I took her in my arms and let her sob until she calmed down.

Ben, Maria, Richard and Miranda were still sitting at the table, they watched Daniel take off after Charlie without a word. The only sound was Maria’s uncontrollable laughter. When she found her voice after being stunned into silence by Charlie’s outburst and the power that ebbed out of her in strange pulsations, Miranda cleared her throat and asked the question they were all thinking.
“What on earth was that?”
“If you had given us a moment before you attacked my mate and Daniel’s, we would have told you that Charlie had a vision last night. She is connected to something ancient and powerful, and because of that, she has been able to warn us about a threat not just to us, but to Lycans everywhere. Actually, not just Lycans either, it’s a threat to the witches too! It could be a threat to everything on this planet for all we know! And you just ran off the only connection we had to it. Charlie saw a war, that kills your eldest son and whatever it was that warned her, told her they would return to her. But once again you only thought about you, and your precious dynasty and fucked the rest of us. Well done mother!” Ben snarled at Miranda. Maria had finally stopped laughing and was looking at her mate with unbridled lust, she had been waiting years for him to stand up to his mother and now that he had she could think of nothing but rewarding him.
“What war, against who? What did she see exactly?” Richard asked, thankfully interrupting Maria’s thoughts before her arousal perfumed the room, she blushed and busied herself with pouring more coffee.
“She was too shaken last night to give us many of the details, but she did say Hyacinth, the Queen of the witches was there, fighting with Daniel. Actually, she rode his wolf into the battle and used her powers to send a column of lightning into the sky. Then an army of wolves and, what we assume from the brief description Charlie gave us, witches and nymphs gathered to fight the coming threat.” Ben explained to his father. They all knew the implications of witches, wolves and nymphs fighting together. It had never been seen before. There were individuals from each species that had been welcomed into the packs or covens of their mates but overall, they didn’t trust each other and kept their distance. For a threat big enough and dangerous enough to unite several species against it could mean the fate of the planet was held in the balance. No one said another word as they mulled over the consequences of what a war of that scale could mean.

Charlie POV

I had made it halfway up the street by the time Daniel caught up to me, I explained why we couldn’t be together, but he wouldn’t listen. He held me as I sobbed, as I unleashed all of my anger, frustration, and despair over everything. When I had calmed myself down and dried my face, a question I had been holding onto slipped out of my mouth.
“What did your mother mean when she said I wasn’t Fae because of my hair?” I asked.
“Oh,” Daniel said with a smile, “the fae and their descendants all have red hair, or red tones at the very least.” He pointed to his own chestnut hues.
“Wait, every ginger person in the world is a fae?” I asked sceptically.
“No, they probably have a fae ancestor though. The fae were notorious for having multiple lovers, they were unusually fertile compared to humans so even one-night stands often resulted in a pregnancy. Where did you think all the stories about changelings and succubae and incubi came from?” He asked, but I had never thought about it before.
“I just assumed people cheated and didn’t want to admit it, so they blamed a demon, and cot death or failure to thrive were things people needed a reason for. I never believed there could be some truth to any of it!” I exclaimed, suddenly rethinking everything I had ever known... again.
“I have to go back to Ben and Maria’s, I’m sure they’ve told my parents about your vision by now, but we still need a plan to fight these uprisings and warn everyone without letting the guilty parties know what’s happening,” Daniel whispered to me softly, like he suspected someone might hear us. I rolled my eyes, the wolves thought they were so advanced with their mind links and ability to shift, but they didn’t consider simple human ways of communication that could be secure.
“Give me your phone,” I demanded, as I held my hand out expectantly. He handed it over to me as we started to walk back down the street. “I will not apologise for anything I said to your mother, and one more nasty word from her and I walk,” I instructed him as I typed up an email.
