In The Beginning, Chapter 117
Charlie saw the detective to the door, slamming it in his face after he forced his card on us, with a reminder to call him if I remembered anything else, before joining me back on the couch.
“You should call Robert and tell him exactly what that detective said.” She fumed as she sat down beside me.
“I will, but I doubt we will be seeing him again.” I couldn’t help but chuckle at her outrage.
“I thought Alex and Robert were steering the investigation towards corporate sabotage?” She asked as she cuddled into me.
“They were, I think that guy is going rogue, he obviously didn’t believe then, which is frustrating, but he won’t find anything, so don’t worry about it.” I whispered, kissing the top of her head as she rested it on my shoulder.
“I’m not so sure about that, he seemed very dogged about his theory of what really happened.” She replied, obviously annoyed.
“Do you want to get changed and we will go to into the town, I can show you around a bit before we get lunch?” I asked, no matter how good her ass looked in the yoga pants she was wearing, I didn’t want the rest of the pack seeing it. She rolled her eyes at me, but got up and headed for the stairs.
Several hours later, after walking through the whole town, and Charlie getting gifted things in almost every shop, including the butcher’s, who insisted on giving her not only an enormous brisket, but the recipe he used for pack functions, something I had never been given, I might add. We finally got all the bags back to the car, (the brisket was being delivered, also free of charge) Charlie had also bought something in every shop, so my trunk was packed, and went to the diner for lunch. Thankfully, the pack members already eating just looked our way, curious, but left us alone once we were sat in a booth towards the rear of the building. However, the staff were practically fighting each other to be our servers, which resulted in a loud argument between the girl in charge of our section, and another who felt she should be our server as she had seniority. Charlie was blushing adorably, while I was dumbfounded by the idiotic conversation, so when the girl whose section we were in won, and came to take our order, neither of us had even picked up a menu.
“Can I get you started with some drinks? Coffee, soda? We have really good shakes!” She enthusiastically informed Charlie.
“Umm, sure, I’ll have a chocolate shake please, and a few more minutes to decide what to eat.” She replied with a nervous smile at the girl.
“Coffee, and some iced water for me.” I dismissed her, she ran off like her life depended on it. “I’m sorry, I didn’t think they would be this...” I couldn’t even finish the sentence in my mind, as I linked Charlie.
“It’s okay, they’re just excited, they haven’t seen me much, you’ve been keeping me locked away in the pack house.” She teased, squeezing my hand. “What’s good, other than the burgers?”
“Oh, you want a burger, trust me.” I chuckled, pointing out the selection in the menu. Watching Charlie read everything that came with the meals was entertaining, her eyes bulged when reading the first description. “I’m never going to finish all that!” She exclaimed after reading the whole section.
“That’s okay, I’ll finish whatever you don’t.” I couldn’t help but chuckle, she gave me a dubious look, but sighed, looking around at the plates being delivered to other customers, and scanning the rest of the menu, she must have realised the portion sizes were more Lycan appropriate than anywhere else she had been. “You promise it won’t go to waste?” She asked, and I could resist stealing a kiss.
“I promise.” I chuckled again, but we were interrupted by the girl returning with our drinks on a tray.
“Have you decided?” She asked, way too excitedly.
“I’ll have the bacon cheese burger please, with pepper jack cheese.” Charlie ordered.
“Supreme daddy burger for me.” I replied, making Charlie snort, I raised an eyebrow, but she was hiding her face, her shoulders shaking slightly as she tried not to laugh out loud. The girl smiled and ran off to the kitchen, while I pulled Charlie closer to me in the booth. “What’s so funny?” I asked, but she shook her head. “You’re gonna have to tell me eventually!”
“Who names a burger that?” She finally giggled, scanning the menu again for it before putting it back into the box on the end of the table, that also housed the condiments.
“Did you have fun today?” I asked as she relaxed back in the crook of my arm.
“Yes, very much.” She smiled, leaning up to kiss me, my free hand slipped into her curls as her tongue ran along my bottom lip, everything else disappeared, until there was only us. When she pulled back, and ran her nose along mine affectionately, the sounds of the diner pierced the little bubble we had only just left. Just like our drinks, our food was made in record time, the girl rushed over with two of the diner’s signature plates, that looked more like serving platters, the cook had gone overboard on the extras, so they were piled with food. Charlie had opted for the smallest of the burgers, with half a pound of beef, six rashers of bacon, and three slices of cheese, and the option to add an egg, peanut butter, or a dozen other toppings. It came with fries, onion rings, a pickle, and a salad, but the cook had also added jalapeño poppers, deep fried mozzarella sticks, buffalo wings and several dipping sauces. My meal consisted of a pound of hamburger patties, twelve pieces of bacon, five slices of cheese, topped with a fried egg, sunny side up, and pulled pork. Served with fries, onion rings, pickles and a salad, I also had an extra slice of bread in the middle, (with the option of a second bun top to make it into two burgers, making it easier to hold) and all the extras Charlie had been given. She just stared first at her own plate, then at mine.
“Is something wrong Luna?” The girl asked when she didn’t move after the plate was placed in front of her.
“It’s so much food!” She stage whispered, unable to drag her eyes away from the plates.
“Not for a Lycan!” The girl grinned, leaving us to eat in peace. I began adding salt to my fries, and grabbed the ketchup from the box, while Charlie tried to work out where to start.
“Just eat what you want, it’s fine!” I chuckled, handing her the salt.
“Somehow adding salt to this feels like it could actually kill me.” Charlie grumbled as she sprinkled a tiny amount on her fries before tasting one. “Oh my God! How is that so good?” She groaned when she bit into the crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside fry.
“I could tell you, but you’re gonna regret knowing before you finish.” I teased, tucking into my meal happily.
“Then don’t tell me, it’s too good.” She laughed as she picked up another fry. “What’s that?” She pointed to one of the dipping sauces.
“I think that’s the blue cheese dipping sauce, it goes well with the wings!” I encouraged, but she pulled a face and moved it to my plate instead.
“I’m not a fan of blue cheese.” She explained, wrinkling her nose and shaking her head, but she plucked a wing from the plate, and dipped it into the diner’s hot sauce making a little groan of satisfaction when she bit into the meat. Pretty soon we were dipping everything on our plates into the sauces, Charlie favoured the sweeter honey based hot sauce, and blushed again when I placed my own pot on her plate. She ate less than half before giving in, and lying down on the bench, complaining about eating too much.
“You lost weight when we were... when we...” I said it via the link so no one would hear, but I didn’t know how to say it without upsetting her, she had only just put the weight she lost at the beginning of our relationship. She was even smaller now than she had been then, making me a little terrified of snapping her if I was too rough.
“I know, I just didn’t have an appetite.” She replied, like she was afraid I was angry with her.
“At least finish your shake!” I nudged her with my elbow as I finished my plate and swapped it for hers. It wasn’t often I indulged to such extent, but I had been running on a deficit of calories for weeks too, and now that things were better, I was starving, and fully intended to eat until I felt sick.
“It is a good shake.” She sighed, pulling herself upright, while I tried not to spit ground beef out of my mouth laughing at the pained expression on her face. “Don’t be mean, I’m like half your size, I can’t fit that much food inside me, its scientifically impossible.” She groaned as she reached for the glass. By the time I finished, she was cradling her shake, leaning on my shoulder, I wasn’t sure if she was that full, she needed a nap, or the sheer amount of fat and sugar she had consumed had put her close to a diabetic coma.
“You okay baby?” I asked her softly.
“No, I’m in actual physical pain, but I can’t stop drinking!” She groaned, I took the glass, which still had about a quarter if the 32oz shake left in it, and moved it out of her reach. “I both love you more than ever, and hate you a little right now!” She pouted, looking up at me, I grabbed a couple of wet naps out of the box.
“Do you need one?” I asked, holding up an unopened packet.
“Yes, I just didn’t know they were there, I was hoping I’d find the will to go to the restroom before we left.” She sighed, and I was so fucking happy, I cupped her face and kissed her softly, she looked up at me with that smile she keeps just for me, and I somehow found myself falling even deeper in love with her.
