In The Beginning, Chapter 48

“I was told the story of an Alpha that was mated to the granddaughter of the Sun Goddess? Could that be one of my cousins? And if not, do you know anything about it?” I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.
“Hmm, the only Sun God is Apollo, none of my sisters had that title bestowed on them. She could have been one of his children, Lycan’s were born to fight vampires, so mating between the two species has not been prolific. There were few of Zeus or Apollo’s children that sought out Lycan mates, but maybe a child of Hermes? That trickster derived sick pleasure from torturing our creations with the mate bond. One of his “games” was to infiltrate a pack, clan, kingdom, whatever, get close to the ruler, and begin to poison their minds. He did this a number of times, all over the world. Perhaps his most famous alias, after Hermes, and Mercury, was that of Loki? I was not on Earth at that point, but his fingerprints are all over those stories, if you know what to look for.”
“Do any of my cousins have mates, like me?” I asked, Theia had never mentioned grandchildren, or any other generations, which made me worry.
“My daughter found a mate, but chosen, not fated, on Athena’s world, and I believe some of Poseidon’s children mated, but I do not know much about them. Poseidon keeps his children close; they rarely leave their home deep in the oceans.” Theia explained with a smile, unaware of the tempest of emotions running through me.
“What about babies? Do any of my cousins have children, I mean.” I asked, my heart threatened to break through my ribs.
“I believe some of them have, many chose not to however.” She nodded.
“Why? I mean, why did they choose not to have children?” I asked, leaning forward, terrified of what she would tell me.
“Many reasons, but mostly out of fear of Zeus. You are not thinking of producing a child with your Alpha, are you?” She asked, with a concerned raise of her eyebrows.
“Not right now, no. But someday, maybe.” I replied bashful.
“I would wait, and I did, for a very long time, but this is a much longer discussion for another day.” Theia said with a pat of my hand, she stood and shimmered away before I could argue, and when the front door flew open, I knew exactly what she had done. Daniel raced into the room, his face red from running, and anger.
“What happened!?” He demanded. “Where are you hurt? Do you need a doctor? Is anything broken?” He shot his questions at me as he gently peeled off my coat to examine the skin hidden underneath. His brow furrowed in concentration and anger as he saw the bruises on my arms, but even I could tell they looked a few days, rather than minutes old. “Are there more?” He demanded, I winced as I lifted my shirt, the ribs on the right side of my chest were purple and a little sore, but better than they had been. I was a little surprised they weren’t broken, but the fact that I could take deep breaths without crying convinced me they were in one piece.
“Theia was trying to get me to teleport. I couldn’t do it on my own, so she tried scaring me, but I’m too stubborn and kept trying to block her attacks.” I joked, trying to get his frown to disappear.
“You took on a goddess? With what training exactly?” He said low and quiet, which made the hair on my arms and neck stand to attention.
“Couple of years self-defence at the Y?” I smiled, he didn’t.
“WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING!? WHAT THE FUCK WAS SHE THINKING!? YOU’RE LUCKY YOUR RIBS AREN’T SHATTERED!” He started screaming.
“OKAY! Calm down, I’m fine, but I get it, next time a god attacks me I won’t defend myself!” I replied sarcastically, getting frustrated.
“Don’t, Charlie, just don’t.” He warned, standing and leaving the room, I was pissed and wanted to go after him, but I was so tired, and I was still a little sore, so I ended up just flopping back onto the cushions. He returned after a few minutes with a teacloth with ice in it, without saying a word, he lifted my shirt and put it on my bruised ribs. I yelped involuntarily at the cold sensation on my skin, but in a few seconds, it was feeling better.
“It’s not like I did it on purpose, I was just trying to prevent getting smacked in the face.” I admitted lowly, embarrassed I had failed so badly.
“I know. I hate that I can’t do this for you!” He sighed, taking us both off guard.
“What?” I asked him and saw the mask of anger crack.
“As your mate, I should protect you, from everything, I don’t know how to protect you from this. From your powers, from your fucked up family drama, and it’s making me crazy!” He growled; his free hand stroked my cheek gently, before tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
“Well, I’m pretty sure I have an in with the being that created the mate bond, if you wanna change your mind.” I again tried to tease, but if looks could kill, I think I would be meeting my grandparents earlier than I anticipated.
“Do not say that again. You are mine.” He growled as his eyes glowed amber.
“I was only joking.” I moped.
“Well don’t.” He snapped, placing my hand over the ice pack and getting up again.
“Where are you going?” I called as he tried to walk away again.
“To run you a bath, you’re gonna need it.” He yelled back, heading up the stairs. I leaned into the pillows, letting the ice numb the ache, it wasn’t long before I heard Daniel heading back down the stairs. “Why did you block me? I might not have been so panicked if you had just told me what you were doing. Instead, I got hit with your shock, fear and pain before I stopped feeling you at all. I didn’t know where you were, I prayed Theia got you here, but I thought you’d been attacked! Do you have any idea how terrified I was?” He asked as he lifted me off the couch and carried me upstairs.
“I didn’t know.” I admitted, and he looked at me confused. “I didn’t feel the link, I didn’t even realise I couldn’t feel it. And I tried for two hours to teleport two feet, but nothing happened, so Theia told me she would attack me, and almost instantly did. I had no time to link you, I was just defending myself, besides, I don’t think she was using anywhere near her full strength, she was just trying to scare my powers into protecting me.”
“You think your powers affect the link?” He asked, concerned.
“Maybe, Theia wasn’t sure, one of us has never mated with a Lycan before, so there’s no way of knowing for sure.” I explained.
“What about the story with the sun goddess?” He asked.
“Yeah, I wondered the same thing, but none of my aunts are known as the sun goddess, Theia thought it might be someone related to Apollo or Hermes, but she wasn’t sure.” He nodded in understanding as he placed me on the counter, leaving me there to check the water in the tub. “It’s not your responsibility to protect me from my powers, you do know that right? All of this, war with the vampires, Zeus, Apollo, it’s my fight, not yours, I wouldn’t blame you if you chose to keep the pack safe, and out of it. None of you would be in this fight if it wasn’t for me.” I admitted, and winced as I tried to lift my arms, my hair was already in a ponytail, I was trying to tie it up so it wouldn’t get wet, but my ribs were still too sore for that kind of action. Daniel sighed, I could feel his frustration, he dried his hands and came to pin my hair for me. He helped me strip off my clothes and placed me in the water before he spoke again.
“If you weren’t my mate, there is a good chance my parents, Ben, Maria and I would all be dead, and the pack would be in the hands of Owen and the vampires. Meeting you, falling in love with you, is the best thing that ever happened to me, so don’t talk about removing the mate bond or any of that shit again. Because with or without it, I’m never going to let you go.” He confessed softly, as his hands moved over my skin. The heat from the water was soothing my aching muscles, and his hands kneading my legs felt wonderful. More than one lewd moan escaped my lips as his fingers worked out the tension in my body. “I know it’s your fight, Apollo, Zeus, Hermes, whomever, but it’s my fight too.” Something about his voice and conviction made it sound like a vow, and I had no idea how to respond to that.
“Aren’t you going to join me?” I asked instead, when he moved behind me to massage my back.
“Not today, the new wolves are pretty much settled, but I have to do one more round, see if there’s anything they need before I’m done for the night. I was thinking of ordering in?” He offered.
“Yeah, sounds good.” I replied, trying to hide my disappointment. It wasn’t like we could be intimate with all my bruises, but something about leaning against his broad chest, his arms and legs enveloping me in the tub made me feel safe and protected.
“I won’t be long, I promise.” He whispered, kissing my temple. “I’ll be back before the water gets cold.” He said as he left me to soak in the hot water.
