In The Beginning, Chapter 4 - Come In Closer
I grabbed a pair of sweats and threw them on before running back downstairs. I had every intention of running straight into the office, getting on my knees and begging her not to leave me, but halfway down, I heard her. She was trying to calm herself, but she couldn’t, all because of me. I tried to go to the kitchen, but I couldn’t walk past the door, not when she was crying, even if I would make it worse. So, I went to the front door to wait for Maria, only for her soft cries to call me back. More than once I reached for the door handle, only to hear how hard she was trying to stop, and decided against it, so I headed back to the front door. After several laps, I lost my patience and linked Maria.
“Where are you? You should be here by now.” I snapped at her through the link.
“I had just got home when you linked me, I had to get dressed and pick up supplies. Unless you have a first aid kit there I could use?” Maria retorted dryly, and I realised even if I did, which was doubtful, I had no idea where it would be. Not wanting to concede anything, I merely grunted in response.
“Just get here quickly.” I ordered before quickly changing my mind. “She’s terrified, whatever happened, whatever I did... she won’t let me near her Maria, and she’s still bleeding...” I could feel myself losing control.
“I’m a couple of minutes away, leave it to me.” Maria replied softly, I was ready to argue when I heard Charlie hiss in pain. Before I could stop, my wolf had practically crashed through the door, his need to protect her overriding my better judgement.
“What happened?” This time she flew into the bookshelf, books, awards, photos, they all clattered to the floor some of them hitting her as they tumbled. I wanted to kiss every part of her that hurt, and hold her close, but when she couldn’t even look at me, I knew I had lost her, and I couldn’t blame her. I felt the rage building in me, I punched the wall with every last ounce of energy I could muster, focusing on the physical pain so I could get away from her. My head was pounding now, the fight with my wolf for control and losing Charlie, was draining. I think I said something to Charlie before I left, but the only things I wanted to say were caught in my throat as I stumbled numbly to the dining table. I managed to lower myself onto the chair, and put my head in my hands, cradling it, and taking a few deep breaths. I had dealt with stress headaches before, but this was blinding, I put my elbows down on the table and tried not to scream as it felt like it was splitting. Suddenly, I was back in bed, with Charlie.
“Any second now.” I heard myself whisper into her beautiful hair, as she nuzzled into my chest. I needed to warn her, but I just kept smiling at her like an idiot. I tried linking her, but I couldn’t, I tried screaming for her, but just like before I silently watched her as the same magic flowed through her body. I tried moving, anything, but I was stuck frozen, as the power built, and exploded, I felt myself hit the wall and grunted as the air was forced from my lungs. Then I was gone, or the bedroom was, either way I still wasn’t in control, merely watching from my body. I was outside in the meadow, mine and Charlie’s, but she wasn’t here, two women I had never seen before were there. One was at least 6ft tall, her long hair was tied back in an intricate braid, she was built like a warrior, fierce, strong. I could see from her muscular arms and legs she was not someone to mess with, also her posture was impeccable. She was arguing with a much smaller women, she was closer to 5ft, and probably wouldn’t be 100lb soaking wet. Her hair was a deep almost black purple, her skin was much darker than the tall woman’s, whose skin closely resembled Charlie’s skin tone. I edged closer so I could make out more of their argument, but tried to remain silent, and hidden. I had appeared close to the treeline, the same place I was when I first saw Charlie, they were further into the field. Using the trees for cover, I moved closer to them, picking up the odd word, but nothing that made sense.
“You should have told me, Diana, I know you know this.” The tall woman argued.
“I did, I told all of you what I was doing, but you never listen because I’m the baby, and you never think I can outdo any of you, Thena.” The shorter one argued back.
“It’s not about outdoing us Di, it’s about what it has done, and will do.” The tall one, Thena sighed, rubbing her forehead with the tips of her long fingers.
“Oh, for the love of sanity will you stop skulking in the shadows and get out here, this involves you too Alpha.” The short one, Diana, turned and shouted directly at me, but she couldn’t have, I’ve never been spotted before, I thought. “Yo, Alpha Daniel Thomas Summer of the Applewood Pack. I see you; I hear you, and if you don’t get out here now, I’m gonna fire a warning shot into those trees to scare you out.” She loudly announced, drawing a dazzling white bow and arrow, seemingly from thin-air and pointing it directly at me. I stepped through the grass, hesitant to reveal myself, but she had proven she knew where I was. She lowered the bow, both it and the arrow shimmered and disappeared wherever they came from. I approached the women carefully, the closer I got the more I noticed. Thena, was handsome, she wasn’t soft and pretty, she had a very strong jawline, full but small lips, a straight nose that led to thick neat eyebrows. Her eyes were a bizarre blue grey, with a dark ring of almost purple blue around the outside of her iris, and her hair was white with a shimmering silver. I had thought it was a trick of the light, but up close I could see, her hair almost looked like the moon, it had the exact same colours in it. Diana on the other hand, had a lot more strength than I had first thought. Her arms were tiny, but toned, and her bow didn’t move once she had draw it earlier. She also had the stance of a hunter, the way her dark eyes swept the trees, and how else could she have spotted me?
“This isn’t a good idea.” Thena said loudly to Diana.
“Oh, go back to your equations then.” Diana snapped. “Do you know who we are?” She asked me.
“You are Diana, she is Thena, other than that no.” I replied, there was something about Diana, despite her actions, I felt no threat from her, or any real animosity. If anything, she calmed me.
“Do you know what happened tonight?” Diana asked, in an almost maternal tone, like a mother asking her child what they did at school. That’s when I remembered Charlie.
“Charlie.” I muttered, my head turning towards the house.
“She will be fine, it’s you we are worried about.” Diana said serenely, drawing my attention back to her, almost instantly, which confused me. “When you and Charlie completed the mate bond, you completed a ritual, that ties your souls together. So, when she got her powers tonight, you were infused with that power too. And because of the blood oaths your pack, and Alpha Kasa and the Sycamore Pack were infused with that power too, but to a lesser degree.” She explained softly.
“Okay... what does that mean?” I asked, unsure if this was good or bad.
“Well, your pack, and Alpha Kasa and his pack will be stronger, live a little longer, and will all hold a deeper connection... if you live, that is. See, this has never happened before so there’s no way of knowing if your wolf will accept or reject the power.” She said with a sad smile.
“And if he doesn’t accept it?” I asked.
“We will know either way soon.” Diana replied sadly, rubbing my back.
“What do you mean?” I asked, confused.
“The force of the power in your system knocked out your human side, this is a dream.” She said with a small chuckle. “I came here to see your wolf, but it seems he is in full control out there.” She huffed like she missed out on something.
“And if he accepts the power?” I asked, curious.
“You would become the strongest Lycan to ever live.” She replied with a smile.
“Who are you?” I asked, but she just giggled, before smiling widely.
“He has decided.” She whispered softly, pulling my face down she pecked my cheek. “Go.” She laughed, and just like that I was back at the dining table, sore and confused. Charlie, Maria, Ben and my parents around me.
“What happened?” I asked, almost sounding drunk, and feeling hungover as hell. I tried to stand to a chorus of protests, and more than one pair of hands tried to push me back down. “I need a glass of water, and for everyone to keep their volume to a minimum.” I explained rubbing my temples, my head was still sore, but at least it was a dull ache, not the splitting hell it had been. I rubbed a knot in my shoulder absentmindedly as I watched Charlie, she was sat at the counter, a little way away, but in the same room at least. She was still struggling to look at me for longer than 3 seconds, before her eyes lowered to the cup in her hand. Maria placed a glass of water in front of me, and I drained it, looking at me warily, she took it and refilled it, placing it back in front of me. I took two large gulps, drinking about a third of the glass, before putting it down. “What?” I asked the room, who were all looking at me oddly.
“Daniel, you were unconscious, on the table, for an hour after the entire pack gathered, presumably by your command, only problem is, none of us remember any of it! Parents are frantic, children are distraught, and everyone is terrified. Was this an attack? A spell? What?” My father asked me seriously, I just wasn’t sure what to tell him, everything was still a little fuzzy. My eyes flashed to Charlie; her eyes were still red from crying, and she was gripping her cup like it was a life preserver. Bits and pieces from everything that happened were coming to me slowly.
“It was some kind of test of my wolf.” I said, without really knowing where the answer came from.
“Who was testing you? And why? For what?” My mother asked, her questions rapidly fired at me without a chance for me to answer. A memory of being in the meadow popped into my head, and hair like the moon.
“I think it might have been the moon goddess.” I accidentally said out loud, making everyone freeze.
“Why would the moon goddess test you or your wolf?” Ben asked, his hand snaking around Maria protectively.
“Power.” I said looking around at my family the worry on their faces evident.
