Chapter 126

Charlie POV

I never could have imagined I would end up here, the reality that everything in my life had been leading to this moment, this fight, was beyond my comprehension, despite knowing it was true. If I wasn’t watching the man, I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, the man of my dreams, literally, fighting to protect me, I might have tried to pinpoint the moment that set me on this path, but instead all I could do was helplessly watch every blow to his body, and silently pray it wouldn’t be his last. Exactly how my family orchestrated the events of my life to get me where I was, I had no clue, but I suppose it didn’t matter anymore, only surviving did. I desperately tried to pull the power I knew was inside me out, but without knowing how it worked, I could only stand by, and watch the people I cared about fight the seemingly endless number of creatures overrunning the small town. I watched in despair as more and more of the witches fell fighting the monsters attacking us, Hyacinth’s cries of sorrow ringing out each time another of her people were struck down. Her pain appeared to be fueling the bloodlust of the vile beings, each kill getting more and more grotesque, and her own volleys of spells becoming more devastating.
“Watch out!” I couldn’t stop myself from screaming, as one of the creatures leaped onto his back, his wolf rolling and crushing the monster before it could sink its fangs into his flesh and administer its fatal toxin. But my cries gave away my position, and I was staring at a dozen of the monstrosities, crawling over the walls, trying to find a way past the defenses to get to me. Fear gripped me, and my blood ran cold, I frantically looked around for somewhere to run to, I didn’t want to leave him, but I didn’t see another option, here I would be a distraction that could get him killed. One of the hideous creatures saw its chance and leapt towards me, its elongated arms outstretched, claws ready to slice through my flesh. I didn’t even have time to react, the power surged through and out of me, like an atomic blast, forcing the monsters violently through the air and away from my loved ones and allies. It was the greatest outpouring of energy I had ever felt, and I had no idea how to stop it, a scream erupting from my lips, as my head snapped back with the force of the power punching it’s way out of my body, draining what felt like my life force. I looked at the stars, seemingly for the last time and thought of my mother, my father and him, before my eyes closed, and the energy finally ebbed, and retreated. Leaving my now almost lifeless body to fall to the ground, except, it didn’t, as always he was there to catch me. “I knew I’d see you again.” I whispered, using the last of my energy to open my eyes and take in his beautiful face one last time.
“I’ve got you baby, you’re okay, you’re going to be just fine, I’m here, I’ve got you.” I heard him try and comfort me through his tears as the darkness swallowed me. “No, no, no! Charlie, hang on!” He cried as I sank deeper into the black. I was vaguely aware someone else was with him, but the soft sweet abyss was enveloping me faster than I could fight it, and I was so tired, I didn’t want to. The noise around me dissolved into nothingness, and I was sure my life was over, as everything that connected me to the world drifted away… or maybe I did, unable to feel my body, my connection to him, or sense anything in the dark, for what felt like hours.

I was immediately aware of the light, it started small, weak and far away, but gradually grew, inching towards me, and there was a figure in it, a woman but I couldn’t tell who, not at first anyway. Not until she was close enough to touch, if I had hands, which I wasn’t sure I did anymore, considering I still couldn’t feel anything.
“Charlie, my darling girl!” She whispered. “You have painted a target on your back my sweet child, when your powers broke out to protect you. All of those poor corrupted souls were destroyed by your blast, but they were only the first wave, the first battle in what will be a long and bitter war. And it’s a war we must win, we cannot let them destroy this world, I won’t allow it, but in order to win, you must survive! So, wake up child, and I will be with you shortly, because we have a lot to do, but you should take a couple of days to recover with your mate. I will come to Applewood soon, now, wake up Charlie!” She laughed, I was violently ripped out of the blackness and into his arms, chaos still reigning around me, as my senses brutally returned bombarding me with information.
“Hmm, what happened?” I mumbled, my mind foggy and discombobulated as the world rushed back into focus.
“You’re alive! She’s alive!” He bellowed, but I couldn’t tell who to, my body still stiff, and my senses still overwhelming me.
“We knew she was alive Daniel; you should be shouting she’s awake. You need sleep dear boy.” I heard Hyacinth's voice flitter into the room.
“What happened?” I asked again, still feeling underwater, everything sounded muffled, and looked blurry.
“It doesn’t matter, you’re okay baby, and so am I, so is everyone, just get some rest.” Daniel’s voice said through happy tears, as my eyelids fluttered closed.

I woke up in a strange bed, Daniel was curled around me like a dog, on top of the blankets, his legs along the bottom of the bed, and his body alongside my right side, his hand still holding mine. I couldn’t contain my smile as I brushed the hair off his eyelids, he sniffed and shuffled at the movement, forcing me to suppress a giggle. I was torn away from observing my mate by the door to the room opening, and a smiling Siobhan entering with a tray.
“I'm so glad you’re awake!” she whispered as she brought the tray to me, moving along the opposite side of the bed to Daniel. “He hasn’t left your side. Well, apart from when I forced him to shower and put some clothes on, but then he insisted on bathing you, putting you in your own clothes, and has been here since. We couldn’t get him to eat, or drink or sleep until you stirred in the early hours. Course it’s nearly lunch time now, so I thought I would bring a little something up. Soup for you, not too heavy after everything you’ve been through, and some sandwiches for Daniel. And I’ll bring you both up a nice cup of tea and some cake when you’re ready.” She said motherly, brushing a loose hair behind my ear. “You get better, and get that mate of yours to eat something.” She said a little louder at Daniel’s stirrings, making me chuckle. Daniel nearly fell off the bed in surprise.
“You’re awake? Properly, like out of the woods, feeling good awake?” He asked, hardly believing his own eyes.
“I think so?” I asked with a bemused smile, before turning to mock disapproval. “What’s this I’m hearing about you not eating or sleeping?”
“You have no idea how good it is to hear you tease me.” He sighed, climbing onto the bed and holding me tight.
“I'm okay, just like you said I would be.” I reminded him, moving, so I could look in his eyes. “But, seriously now, even if I'm not doing good, I need you to look after yourself, so you’re strong when I get better.” I whispered, thankfully, Siobhan was already partly out of the door, giving us some privacy. “Promise me, that no matter what happens to me, you will listen to the people who love you, when they tell you to eat and sleep.” I whinced noticing the deep dark circles around his eyes, rubbing my thumb along them gently.
“I can’t promise you that, when it looked like you weren’t going to make it. I could feel my sanity, my tether to this world everything was holding on by a thread. If I lose you… I can’t lose you.” He whispered, placing his forehead against mine.
“I’m sorry I scared you.” I breathed, his mouthwatering smell making me lightheaded. He chuckled in response, and ran his nose along my cheekbone, and around my nose, his lips seeking mine. I whimpered when his lips finally brushed mine, his hand slipped into my hair as the kiss deepened. His tongue danced with mine, I pressed myself against him, my fingers gripping his sweatshirt, edging closer.
“You should eat that soup before it gets cold.” He breathed against my neck, making my breath hitch as he ran his nose over my mark. Kissing it delicately, sending a spark of pleasure between my thighs. I whimpered, my panties were uncomfortably wet against my skin, as he shifted, his lips tantalisingly close to mine. “You need to eat first.” He said with a sly grin, making me groan in frustration, and pout unapologetically, as he placed the tray on my lap, laughing at my pissed face. And yet he blushed when he saw I’d noticed his tent, it reminded me of when we first met, making me smile. He picked up one of the sandwiches, making a production of taking a big bite, and humming in appreciation. I rolled my eyes at him, and tasted the soup Siobhan had made me, it was minted lamb and vegetables, and incredible. I was about to obscenely moan my delight at the sweet soft lamb and rich broth, when a knock at the door stopped me short.
“Good afternoon. I heard you were up, if not yet quite about, and wanted to introduce myself, I fear if I left such things to Daniel, it would never happen.” A man who appeared to be a mess of contradictions said politely from the door. He had silky soft, jet-black hair, down to his shoulders, big wild green eyes, with thick dark eyelashes and even thicker eyebrows, and small but full lips almost hidden under a few days’ stubble. He looked about six foot tall, and was almost as broad as Daniel, he was soft spoken, his skin was dark, with copper tones. He had opted for a plain black t-shirt and jeans, his appearance and demeanor playing at being casual. But his eyes were laser focused, and his posture was not that of someone relaxed, putting me on edge. “I’m Kasa Hensley, of the Sycamore pack.”
“Hello, I’m Charlie Phillips.” I said with a small smile as I ran my fingers through my hair, worried I hadn’t so much as brushed it in days.
“Soon to be Luna of the Appletree pack.” Daniel added, lifting my hand and kissing it softly.
“Where were you before you met your attentive mate?” Kasa asked, confusing me.
“Like where did I live?” I asked, looking to Daniel for clarification, but he had put his sandwich down, and his jaw was clenched.
“Yes, what… tribe was yours; I suppose.” He asked.
“He’s asking what you are.” Daniel said abruptly, getting off the bed and squaring up to the other Alpha.
