Chapter 109
Daniel POV
I watched Dermot’s car disappear from view before I went back inside the cottage, into the parlour and back to Hyacinth.
“Are we okay?” I asked her, I needed us to be on the same page for the meeting.
“That depends on how today goes, but for now, yes, we are in this together.” She replied coldly, as she sipped her tea.
“And you’re still willing to say it was your vision? Not Charlie’s?” I asked, unsure.
“Yes, I will say I had the vision, I won’t endanger anyone intentionally.” She replied pointedly.
“Alright, my brother emailed me a few things, do you have a printer I can use to hand out copies?” I asked, despite my previous stay I had never seen much of the large estate masquerading as a cottage.
“Yes, Aine can show you where it is.” She said, and as if she had been summoned, Aine entered the room. I followed her across the foyer, and through the door directly opposite the parlour. The room wasn’t as big as the one we had just left but had a large oval wooden table in the centre, with a silver plate with a large jug of water on it and three chairs on either side. There was a large, rectangular, burgundy rug beneath the table, and the drapes on the two large windows were the same colour. There was a computer desk with a modern desktop PC and printer on it, to the right and the table, and a built-in shelf and cupboards to my left with refreshments already laid out. I made a beeline for the PC, quickly logged on to my email, and printed out the memos Ben had written up, detailing our investigation, and what little we had learned from our prisoners. I also made sure the contracts for our proprietary bullets and the several different ideas Ben had included for the warriors’ training were in the queue before I went back to Hyacinth.
“Before the other Alphas get here, I was wondering if I could push my luck a little?” I asked gauging her reaction. “Eric Whitehead might not want to listen to anything I have to say... so I was wondering if you could take the lead, at first at least, I will have to deal with him when it comes to the logistics, but we need to convince them of the threat first. Which is where you will be most effective.” Hyacinth stared at me for a few moments in silence, before she stood and cupped my face. I knew she was looking into my future, and I found myself holding my breath in anticipation of what she would decide.
“Alpha Eric will be difficult no matter what. You failed to mention he is a misogynist as well as an arse... but things will go smoother if I take the reins early on, and my only goal is to protect as many lives as possible, so I will do as you ask.” She sighed, removing her hands from my face. “How is your mother?” I shook my head confused and taken aback by her question.
“W-what? Why...?” I stuttered and stumbled.
“I haven’t seen her in a very long time. She was always made to lead, I doubt she is taking her new role as, what? An elder? Very well, I was curious. I may have left my family, but I still have affection for them, and we have time to kill.” She said with a smirk.
“No, she isn’t, but she has a begrudging respect for Charlie... partly because she didn’t take her crap. Told my mother to shove her opinions up her ass and made her submit with her powers. I think they may even become friends eventually.” I chuckled, amused by the emotions on Hyacinth’s face.
“That does sound like something your mother would respond to. She always admired strength, no matter the format, it was one of the reasons I believed she was mated to your father, even as a young wolf, he was remarkably strong, both physically and mentally. You, however, have too much of your mother in you, possibly too much from me too. I knew it was the right time to leave when I saw your mother at her Luna ceremony, I saw her life with your father, and how happy she would be, if not always the kindest Luna. She had a fierceness, that I knew would help you become the man you needed to be, for the war, and what else comes.” She said cryptically.
“My mother told Charlie about a vision, that she would give birth to the King of the Lycans. Was that you?” I didn’t know if I wanted to know the answer, but if there was any truth to it, I wanted to hear it from the horse’s mouth.
“Yes and no, as usual, your mother heard what she wanted to hear. I told her at her Luna ceremony, that she could give birth to the next King of the Lycans, not that it was certain... but something has changed, within you, since you and Charlie completed the mate bond, hasn’t there?” She asked as she looked into my eyes, for what I wasn’t sure, but from her face, it appeared like there was something just out of reach of her sight.
“I feel stronger, my senses more precise, I don’t know how to explain it, and I haven’t tested it, but I could swear I have more energy,” I replied, there was no use hiding anything from her anyway.
“Hmm, I’m not surprised, if Charlie is what her mother thinks she is... there has never been a union like yours before. A Lycan and a Goddess? Do you know about the theories behind the mate bond? Not just the theories about producing a stronger generation, but also the theory about the couple themselves?” She asked, as her hands dropped from my face as she retook her seat at the table.
“I thought the debate was over, it’s not a theory, it’s fact. Our mate has the greatest varying DNA to our own, our opposites if you will, and that provides the greatest possible chance of a stronger generation.” I replied as I sat opposite her.
“Yes, but that doesn’t explain everything does it?” She asked, continuing her mysterious responses.
“What do you mean?” I asked, I was unable to follow her train of thought.
“There is a theory, from long ago, that when the mate bond is completed, you each take on aspects of the other, becoming more than you were before. And if you were to take on aspects of the Gods, wouldn’t that make you stronger? Smarter? Maybe even a little God-like yourself? And if you were to become a Lycan God, wouldn’t your people crown you, King? Follow you? And your children?” She asked and raised her eyebrow, quizzically.
“You can’t be serious! That’s such an outdated notion, taking on- and it was disproved years ago via DNA testing! What you’re talking about is a fairy tale! Like the humans awaiting a messiah, just a story to make sense of a world that doesn’t make sense!” I laughed, in disbelief.
“Maybe, but if Charlie is a goddess, wouldn’t that change everything we know? Everything we believe?” I couldn’t answer because I didn’t know. The truth was, before Jo had brought up Gods and Goddesses, I had believed that even our moon goddess was just a myth, something our ancestors created to answer questions we couldn’t otherwise answer. If she was right, if Charlie was a Goddess, could all our myths be real? I shook my head, refusing to accept it.
“None of that matters now, we have to focus on the Alphas, and the vampires, if Charlie is a goddess, well we will just have to deal with that when her family turns up, until then, we say nothing, to anyone. I won’t have people losing their minds and becoming fanatical, not before we know for sure what she is. Besides, we need to handle one thing at a time, and the most pressing issue is the impending war with the vampires.” I stated, determined to get the other Alphas to listen to me.
“I don’t disagree, but you asked about the vision I had, long ago, before your mother was even born, when I looked into the eyes of my beloved Thomas.” She said with a sad smile.
“You mean when you saw your offspring leading every pack in America?” I asked, I had heard so many different visions of the future it was hard to keep them straight.
“No, that came later, when our first son was born, and I looked into that child’s eyes for the first time. The vision your mother was talking about, was born in the eyes of my Thomas. The first time I saw him, he was beautiful, I had no idea a man could be that handsome, we were drawn to each other like magnets. And when I looked into his eyes for the first time, I saw it, a Lycan stronger than any before him, stronger than the last Lycan King, and a family, who would rule for millennia. I didn’t see a face, just a throne, and a line of rulers, who were not just strong, but fair, and just, and who would unite all of the beings, even the humans, eventually, and banish the darkness that has contaminated this world. It was so beautiful, I began crying with happiness, Thomas claimed me as his mate and I claimed him as mine, and we left for the new world, where I had seen my vision begin. He never doubted me, my visions, my opinions, it was not always that way, some Alphas were like this Eric Whitehead, they thought their Lunas were beneath them, despite worshipping a female. But my Thomas believed that I was his equal, his partner, even his superior in certain aspects, he was a man ahead of his time. I miss him every day, you look a little like him, your hair is redder than his, but still, from certain angles, very similar, it was one of the reasons I allowed you to enter our sanctuary.” She said as a tear rolled down her cheek. I was stunned, she had never told me why she permitted me to enter, I had thought it pity at first, then when I found out who she really was, because we were family. But I found myself proud to be like the man she had described, even just in looks, he sounded like a good man, one I wished I had been able to get to know. My thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door to the parlour.
“I’m sorry to interrupt, but the first Alpha has just entered the town, they will be here shortly,” Aine informed us.
“Yes dear, thank you, I did feel his presence. We need to get into position, make a show of welcoming them here.” She said to Aine before she turned back to me. “You should wait in the meeting room, we want to make it appear as if there is a separation between us, a tentative coalition between our people to fight the coming war, nothing more, if we expect Alpha Whitehead to cooperate,” Hyacinth informed me, before she stood, and left the room with Aine.
