Chapter 29
“Were you planning on kidnapping me or something?” I teased.
“No, not at all, I just thought if things went well and you came here and we did what we just did, you would be able to spend the night and still have things to make that easier. And whenever I missed you or saw something I thought you’d like I picked it up...” He rambled; it was adorable. I kissed him again; I ran my tongue along his bottom lip looking for access into his mouth. I felt his erection grow; my own arousal increased with every stroke of his tongue against mine. He groaned, quietly, and pushed me against the wall next to the armoire, he trapped me between the wall and his body. He backed away, our breath fast and ragged. “I need to go and deal with my brother. You will remain naked and, in that bed, so I can punish you for teasing me.” He stated with a growl. I bit my lip, the memory of the last time he punished me flashed through my mind. “I have told you several times about biting that lip.” He warned. “You know how crazy it makes me.” I slowly released my lip, making a show of it slipping between my teeth, the brat in me loved the wild look in his eyes. He grasped my wrists, lifted them above my head, and pinned me against the wall. “You are asking for trouble kitten; one could be led to believe you would like me to keep you locked in this room.” He challenged; my pussy quivered.
“Maybe, I just want you to hurry back to me?” I offered, smiling, in my sweet and innocent voice, batting my eyelashes for effect.
“Bed. Now. Do not move. I will be back as soon as possible.” He ordered; it made my whole body tremble against him. I let out a small whine as he released my wrists, I hated the loss of his body against mine as he stepped aside, he wanted to watch me get into the bed, I let the sheet drop as I took my first step away from him.
“Oops,” I smiled, I watched him as I continued to walk around the bed, I crawled across it on all fours, until I reached the middle.
“You will be the death of me, woman.” He growled, I let my eyes trail down his body, I could see how hard he was from across the room. His throbbing erection strained against the material of his pants. I knew he was watching me, I licked my lips slowly, he groaned, and ran a hand down his face, before he turned away, out of the bedroom door. I giggled to myself, excited for him to get back, and for us to continue what we had started. Until I heard shouting. Ben was practically barking at his brother, obviously angry. Their voices carried through the house. I froze, conflicted, part of me wanted to run to him, calm him down and find out what had made him so upset. The other half of me knew it would be better if I stayed out of it, it wasn’t my business, it was a family matter or something to do with the pack. I wasn’t his wife, or his family, or part of his pack, it wasn’t for me to get involved. I pulled the covers up over my body, attempting to reassure myself as their argument continued. Until I heard the words that made my blood run cold.
“YOU HAVE A DUTY TO YOUR PACK!” Ben screamed. “YOU SHOULD BE OUT THERE REASSURING EVERYONE, NOT WITH YOUR LATEST PLAYTHING!”
I froze for a moment before I heard a snarl so loud the walls shook. I grabbed his shirt off the floor and my panties, I threw them on quickly. I heard a crash; I flung the door open and ran down the stairs. I found Daniel with his hand around his brother’s throat, Ben’s feet dangled at least a foot off the ground his face was purple. Daniel’s eyes were a blazing amber, but his face was contorted, his mouth was bigger than it should’ve been, his teeth were fangs and bared. His voice was gravelly, the same terrifying tone I heard on the couch.
“Never, ever disrespect my mate again.” He snarled; his entire body vibrated. My body acted of its own accord like I was sleepwalking. I stepped forward and gently placed my hand on his arm. He dropped his brother on the floor and immediately wrapped himself around me his face in the crook of my neck. I felt his whole body relax, he even seemed to shrink somewhat. Ben was gasping for breath on the floor, gulping air in greedily. “I’m sorry, I never wanted you to see me like that, I was so angry, but I swear I would never hurt you.” He practically cried into my neck. I rubbed his back gently, to reassure him and keep him calm. But I felt utterly foolish, of course, this beautiful, amazing, successful, rich man wasn’t really mine. He was just having a good time. Maybe that was part of my psychosis, believing I was worthy of him, and that all this Lycan and mate stuff was just the crazy. He started kissing my neck, making his way to my jawline, he captured my mouth with his, pulling me closer. I poured all of myself into the kiss, giving him every inch of myself, and saying goodbye. Daniel pulled back slightly, to look into my eyes, I begged them silently not to water. I needed to be strong. I smiled at him and kissed him one last time.
“I’m going home, you have stuff to take care of and so do I. I’m going to go get dressed, you should help your brother.” I removed his arms from my waist gently, he was frozen to the spot, he looked devastated, but I couldn’t trust what I saw, I couldn’t trust anything. I walked back upstairs to the bedroom and pulled my clothes on. I needed to find my phone to order a ride share, I had lost my portfolio and work phone at some point. I then remembered Ben had brought my things from the office, I had hoped to sneak out quietly without seeing them. So much for that idea, I thought to myself as I steeled myself to face them and ask for my belongings. I took a deep breath and ran my fingers through my hair, then opened the door. I walked down the stairs head held high, Daniel was where I’d left him, but sat on the floor head in his hands. Ben was crouched next to him; they were talking quietly. I cleared my throat loudly. “I need my phone to call a rideshare and my bag. You can keep the phone and laptop; I will arrange for the bonus to be transferred back to Appletree. I will consider the contract voided; I will have my lawyer contact legal to ensure that’s done by the end of next week. Thank you for the opportunity but I don’t think it’s a good fit.” My voice sounded cold even to me, but I had to keep my emotions in check, or I would’ve broken down. Daniel didn’t even lift his head, his body shuddered, it broke my heart, but I forced my face to remain blank. Ben looked at me with a detached sad look.
“I have it in the office, give me a second.” He stood up and worked his way through the shattered door. He emerged a few moments later with my bag and coat. He handed them to me around his brother.
“Thank you, is there somewhere I can wait until my car gets here? I would prefer to wait somewhere other than this house, if possible.”
“It’s cold and dark out, the nearest house is about a mile away. I’m afraid you’re stuck here if a rideshare will even come out this far.” Ben replied, still watching his brother, his eyes full of guilt and sorrow.
“I guess I will have to try, I need to get home. I’ll wait in the living room if that’s alright?” Ben nodded at me once. I turned on my heel and pulled my phone out before I remembered my portfolio. “If someone could send my portfolio to me, I’m not sure where it went in the commotion earlier, but if it’s found I would like it back please?” I asked turning away, I didn’t trust myself not to look at Daniel’s still shuddering body. Ben nodded again, clear his brother was unable or unwilling to say anything. I walked into the living room, took a seat in one of the chairs and opened the app to order my car. A notification informed me my ride would take thirty minutes I sighed, unsure whether I could keep my tears at bay for that long. I checked my messages, looking for something to keep me occupied and saw a text from Warren.
“Call me please when you get your messages? It's important, I’ve left voicemails but it's full now and I still haven’t heard off you. I’m a little worried lol. Call me.” I frowned at my phone, confused about what could possibly be that important. Then it hit me, Mrs Shapiro. I called him back with shaking hands. “Charlie, where have you been I’ve been trying to reach you all day?” He sounded stressed, which didn’t help the terror that gripped my stomach.
“I’ve been in meetings all day, and I left my phone in my office I’m sorry. Is Mrs Shapiro, okay? Did the super check on her?” He was silent for a few moments.
“I’m so sorry Charlie, it was quick, she was still in her bed. They think it happened in her sleep.” The sob I had been holding escaped my lips, I heard a growl behind me. I turned to see what was happening, Daniel was standing in the doorway, his eyes puffy and red like he had been crying, but he looked furious. I could still hear Warren’s voice through the phone. “Charlie? Charlie? Are you still there? Are you okay? Charlie?” I put the phone to my ear.
“I’m sorry Warren I have to go, thank you for calling me. I think I have her sister’s number somewhere I will make sure it gets to the super or the morgue, or whatever when I get home. I’ll be there in a couple of hours. I’ll knock on your door if you can find out who I need to contact in the meantime. I will call a few funeral homes in the morning after I’ve spoken with her. Thank you for calling I appreciate it.” I rapidly said in a babble of scattered thoughts, before I hung up. My eyes never left Daniel’s; tears streamed freely down my face while his was a mask of anger, which only cracked when I spoke about the morgue and funeral homes. His eyes became worried before they switched back to irate. The moment I hung up he started interrogating me, I could see Ben still in the hallway, his arms crossed and his head down, he was obviously listening to our conversation.
“Who the hell is Warren? Are you fucking him? Or is that just Elaina? Exactly how many people have been between your legs while I was wasting away here waiting for you?” He yelled the last question at me. My grief over Mrs Shapiro and dejection over whatever we were ending were replaced by white-hot rage instantly.
“Not that it’s any of your fucking business, but he is my neighbour. And who the hell do you think you are talking to me like that? I’m not your girlfriend, I’m not your wife, I’m just another plaything you were amusing yourself with. Oh, and before you fall off that high horse onto your face, I never slept with Elaina either. I was only stupid enough to sleep with you, and not even on the first date. Because you never asked me on one, you coerced me, brought me here, fed me a bunch of bullshit and fucked me. So don’t you dare act like the injured party now! But I should have known better than to sleep with my boss. Don’t feel guilty, I certainly won’t.” I seethed, as I pulled the laptop out of my bag, put it on the coffee table and walked towards the front door. His face was a picture of guilt and shame as I stormed past him.
“Where are you going?” Ben was the one to ask, his voice full of concern.
“I would rather wait at the end of the road than be anywhere near him.” I bit, disgusted with the pair of them, and slammed the door behind me.
