Chapter 44

The conversation dried up after Daniel's vow, so he sent Ben and Maria home after he told them we would talk more in the morning. He invited them around for coffee before he saw them to the door. I finished my sandwich and my water; I began feeling a little more sober than I was. Daniel stroked my back, as I stared blankly at my empty scotch glass.
“Do you want another drink?” He offered, but I could tell he didn’t want me to have one, I shook my head.
“No, let’s just go to bed, I’m tired and we have to be up early to get a plan together if we are going to see Hyacinth before the funeral,” I replied, the exhaustion suddenly hitting me.
“Okay, we will go to bed, but we won’t be able to go see Hyacinth until Monday, she’s an eight-hour plane ride away, and it could take days to get answers from her.” He said, looking guilty.
“You’re not asking me to skip the funeral though, right?” I asked as I geared myself up for an argument.
“No, no, I will get us plane tickets for after the funeral. But for the questions and rumours to stop, you’ll have to meet some of the pack, the elders at least.” He rushed to reassure me, but I wasn’t buying it.
“Mmhmm and the part you’re leaving out is?” I asked, I knew he was hiding something.
“I already told them you’re my mate, and you would meet them. I had to, there are rumours of a coup and whoever is behind it was using my outburst at work as proof I wasn’t fit to lead, gaining support. I had to nip it in the butt, by telling them you’re my mate it explains my behaviour.” He took a deep breath. “And by promising I wouldn’t mark you until you had met the elders and some of the pack, giving them a chance to see what a good Luna you will be, it put out a few fires.”
“So, you lied?” I asked, suppressing a smirk, I wanted him to squirm a little.
“I bent the truth a little. I’m not going to mark you, yet, and that’s all that matters to them. And you will win them over, I know you will. Besides, when we get back from seeing Hyacinth, we can tell them you’re not human and that will shut most of them up. They still have some old trust issues when it comes to humans, but maybe being part-something will be enough!”
“So, when I asked if my being human would be an issue, you lied to me?” I was getting upset again.
“It’s not an issue for me, or for the majority of the pack, just a few older members who are holding onto a few backwards ideas. But I know you will convince them there is no one better than you. You care so much about everyone, and I’m not doing this without you. If they can’t accept you, then I’ll hand the pack over to Ben and you and I will go somewhere else. I don’t know what will happen with the company, maybe I will be able to stay on as CEO I don’t know, and I don’t care. I just want you.” He took my face in his hands, and when he looked into my eyes, I couldn’t help but melt. “Let’s go to bed. You look exhausted and I can barely keep my eyes open.” He kissed me softly before he got up from the table and offered me his hand, and then he led me up the stairs. We walked in silence, each still absorbing everything that had transpired, when we got to the bedroom, I headed straight to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth quickly and took my hair out of my bun, running the hairbrush through it. I put everything back turning towards the bedroom to find Daniel leaning on the doorframe watching me. “You’ve made yourself at home.” He smiled.
“I didn’t think you’d mind if I added a few things, I thought you put this stuff here for me,” I replied as self-doubt grew inside me.
“I did, and I like that you feel comfortable here, I want that, I want you to live here with me.” He laughed, watching my eyes bulge with fear. “But if you’re not ready for that then maybe I could convince you to leave a few things for when you spend the weekends?” He backtracked, as I stood frozen in the middle of the bathroom.
“I can agree to leave a few things, but I still want to take things slow. What’s the rush?” I asked, I was hugging my body to self-soothe.
“I’ve been looking for you for seventeen years. I don’t want to wait any longer, I want to start our life together now, is that so bad?” He asked as he pulled me into his arms.
“I just don’t understand why our life together can’t start with dating, like every other couple,” I whispered.
“I get that, but normal Lycan couples meet their mates and are together forever after that, so for me this isn’t fast. We would’ve mated the first day we met, before we even left my office. I know none of this has been easy for you and I’m so thankful you’ve agreed to so much. But I can't stop myself from wanting more.” When he explained it like that, I felt guilty for making him wait, but I couldn’t make myself ready for something when I wasn’t. I understood that he believed we were made for each other, and I felt connected to him, but I couldn’t tell if that was because of the mate bond or the bond we had developed in our shared dreams. I felt another wave of exhaustion hit me and leaned into him for support. “Let’s talk about this in the morning, you’re dead on your feet. Come on let’s get into bed.” He pulled me into the bedroom, switching the light off as we went. He took his sweats off and sat on the bed, letting out a tired sigh, I pulled off my sweatshirt folded it and put it on the dresser. I shimmied out of my yoga pants before I realised, I had an audience, I turned to Daniel who hadn’t moved, his eyes were glued to my mostly naked body. I put the pants on top of the sweater and picked up the satin nightie. “Leave it off.” He instructed, as his eyes devoured all of me. He moved so his back was against the headboard.
“I thought you were tired?” I teased, as I walked around the bed slowly.
“I’ll never be too tired for that.” He grinned. “Lose the panties too.” He ordered; I felt a shiver of excitement run through me. I slid them down my thighs, as I watched his reaction, his eyes never left mine as they dropped to the floor. “Here now.” He growled, I crawled across the bed, and up between his legs. His erection was obvious, I couldn’t stop my eyes from darting to it. Once I was within arm's reach of him, he yanked me up his body, forcing my legs apart to either side of his. He ran his nose up my shoulder to my neck and growled softly. I gasped; my head fell back as his hands moved over my body. He traced the tip of his nose down my chest, his arms circled me and pulled me against him. I whimpered as his cock brushed against my wet pussy. “You’re so beautiful!” He murmured, his lips against my throat. My fingers laced into his hair, pulling his mouth to mine, and our tongues danced together. His hands moved down my arm as he guided himself inside me, bringing me down slowly on his hard shaft, I groaned at how full I felt. His hands guided my hips as I gripped him, my back arched as he entered me again.
“Daniel!” I moaned, as my hips ground against his, and my breasts bounced against him.
“Fuck, kitten, I love the way you moan my name!” He groaned as he increased his rhythm, he pounded into me repeatedly. His mouth trailed down my chest, his lips caught my nipple he sucked on it softly. He bit down, which pushed me over the edge, my pussy milked him as it pulsed around him. I screamed as my body jerked and quivered, his movements quickened, he violently plunged into me, it extended my orgasm until I was whimpering and gasping for air. He growled as he found his own release, his fingers dug into my soft flesh. I sighed as my body went limp, my muscles completely relaxed, my earlier exhaustion felt overpowering. He nuzzled my neck, as he held me close, he gently shifted me off him and onto the bed. I hummed content and sleepy, I felt him leave the bed, and a few moments later I was aware he was cleaning between my legs with a damp washcloth, but I was too tired to object. Once I was clean and dry, he brought the covers up over my body, before getting under them himself. He moved so his body encased mine, he brushed my hair off my face, making me feel precious and cared for. I couldn’t stop the blissful smile that spread across my face. He kissed my cheek and moved me so his arm was under my head, the other wrapped around my waist. I started to drift off, feeling more at home in his arms than I had ever felt anywhere else.
“I love you,” I whispered as the darkness overtook me; it pulled me under. The anxiety I had previously felt about falling asleep was a distant memory.
