In The Beginning, Chapter 118

Charlie POV

After the frankly disgustingly big lunch we scoffed, I was whimpering trying to walk out of the diner, but not before Daniel ordered a pie and a cheesecake to go. A whole one of each, while I felt like I had consumed enough calories for a week. Once we were outside, Daniel handed me the boxes, and picked me up, carrying me, despite my protests, (which abruptly stopped because it was drawing more attention) to the car. He put me in the passenger seat, and did up my belt, kissing me sweetly, before running around to his side.
“I could’ve done it myself.” I commented while he was buckling his own belt.
“I know, but you don’t have to, I like looking after you, so let me.” He growled a little, sending a shiver down my spine, he must have noticed because he started smirking as he put the car into drive.
“You have food in your beard.” I stated, and the smirk disappeared as he stopped pulling out of our space to check it in the mirror, while I sniggered beside him.
“You could have told me before we left the diner.” He grumbled, pulling a pack of wet ones out of the glove compartment, and a beard comb. After the initial shock I laughed until my sides hurt at his little grooming ritual, I really had never seen a man spend as much time on his beard as Daniel. Once he was done, and we were on our way home I got a feeling I didn’t recognise.
“Something's wrong.” I told him, as the feeling raised the hairs on the back of my neck, grew stronger. Without thinking I sent my power out to the barrier I had erected while Daniel was unconscious, it had nearly drained me, but I needed to keep the pack safe while he was recovering. “Stop!” I screamed, as Hermes appeared in the road in front of us. Daniel slammed on the breaks, threw the car into reverse, but another vampire appeared behind us. He hit the breaks again, and we heard something land on the roof. He quickly accelerated forward, then slammed on the breaks again a few yards away from Hermes, who just stood aside as his man on top of the car was flung in his direction. His once handsome face had four deep scars running along it, the second from the top started in the corner of his eye, the one above it sliced through his eyebrow, while the lowest one sliced through his lips, making him as gruesome on the outside as he was within.
“Get to the pack house, a squad is on their way to me.” He ordered as he got out of the car, he slammed the door shut, took two steps forward and shifted, my Alpha, tearing his clothes to shreds as he pounced towards Hermes. But I couldn’t move, Ethan's warnings about not exerting himself ringing in my ears as I spotted the vampire behind us charging towards Alpha. I send a bolt of power out of my hand, hitting the vampire in the face and sending him flying backwards, and unfortunately, shattering the rear window. I jumped out of the car, as the one that had been send skidding along the road behind Hermes got to his feet and turned towards Alpha with vengeance in his eyes. He had road rash on both arms, his right cheek and chin, and I could see through the torn fabric of his clothing that he had some on his legs and chest too, but as he was advancing, I could see it healing, so why hadn’t Hermes injury? I wondered.
“YOU'LL PAY FOR WHAT YOU AND YOUR FUCKING DOGS DID TO MY FACE!” Hermes screamed as he threw Alpha off of the road. I could see him get to his feet, growling as he tried to move between us again.
“Charlie, go! NOW!” He screamed through the link.
“NO!” I screamed, sending another barrier out until Alpha was inside it with me.
“You think this will stop me? I GOT THROUGH THE OTHER ONE YOU STUPID LITTLE BITCH!” Hermes screamed as he pounded his fists on the barrier, like a child throwing a tantrum. I ignored him, rushing to Alpha’s side, although I couldn’t assess the damage properly through his fur.
“I told you to go, twice!” He growled through the link, looking around for the squad.
“And I told you to stop telling me I can’t fight for you when you fight for me.” I snapped back. “I could get us to the pack house, if you can get as many of the warriors there as possible, they’re not alone.” I informed him.
“Fuck! Do you know how many?” He asked, trying to think of an alternative plan.
“Thirty, I think.” I replied, and he cursed again.
“Okay, I’ll link everyone, how long can we give them?” He asked, looking at Hermes, who had stopped physically attacking the barrier, and was using his powers to try and break through.
“Five, maybe ten minutes... he’s really strong.” I winced as I funnelled more power to the barrier to keep it intact.
“You will tell me before you drain yourself. Promise me.” He demanded.
“I promise.” I whispered as a rogue tear escaped my lower lid, the effect of using so much power to keep Hermes out, and the realisation that if I did drain myself, we would be stuck where we were, without backup. He knew and was prepared to fight anyway.
“Just a few more minutes baby and then you take us to the meadow, okay?” He encouraged via the link, unwilling to shift back until he knew I was safe, unwilling to waste precious seconds. I could feel beads of sweat forming on my forehead as Hermes increased his attacks, it felt like a sticky, oily, cold substance was trying to force its way into my skin, like a thousand needle pricks at once. He rubbed his head on my chest, leaning up to place little licks on my neck and jaw to comfort me before scanning our surroundings and repeating.
“Okay, ready?” Alpha finally linked; his eyes glued to mine. I ran my fingers through his fur and focused on the meadow. It was almost instantaneous, I felt the barrier drop a fraction of a second before we were floating away, like a dandelion on the breeze. I expected to land in the peace of the meadow, instead it looked like a battlefield, wolves were fighting vampires everywhere, outnumbering them three to one. The wolves worked in tandem, sometimes switching from one group to another where they saw an opening, the teams adjusting quickly to compensate. Alpha charged towards a vampire as it grabbed a wolf by his neck, after injuring two others. I spun around just in time to see Alpha clamp his enormous mouth around the vampire's head, it dropped the wolf it was holding as it was pulled to the ground by Alpha’s momentum, and he started shaking his head, rag-dolling the vampire until I heard its neck snap, and the crunch of what I think was his skull. My Alpha stood proud, letting the vile black goo drip from his mouth as he snarled menacingly, and circled me protectively. I spotter Hermes as soon as he materialised, his black empty eyes seemed to burn as it travelled over my skin, but like ice, not like the enticing warmth of Daniel’s beautiful brown eyes, or the scorching intensity of Alpha’s. He began charging towards me, flanked by the same two that attacked our car. Hermes stopped to brutally kick a wolf in the face, even from twenty yards away, and with din of snarls and growls, whines and screams around me I heard the snap of his neck, and another chain in the pack link disappeared. I struggled to suppress my sobs as Hermes turned his icy stare off of the now human dead body and focused again on me.
“I WILL KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF YOUR DOGS FOR WHAT YOU DID TO ME!” He bellowed, as he pulled a case from inside his pocket. He opened it to show me a syringe with an unnaturally blue liquid inside it. “THIS IS FOR THAT THING YOU’VE BEEN FUCKING! HE’s GONNA LOOK GREAT, SKINNED, AND MADE INTO A RUG THAT I WILL FUCK YOU ON EVERY NIGHT!”
I felt a rage building inside of me, fuelling me, any fatigue I felt burned away by my growing wrath. Alpha roared, it’s the only way to describe it, a growl so loud, so vicious, so dominant, he roared. I saw some of the vampires actually flinch, as every wolf seemed to draw strength from it, all growling lowly as their prey took a step back. Like it had been a battle cry, the moment he stopped they all attacked, Alpha ran straight at Hermes, who a second later also charged. I flung spears of my power out of my palms, impaling both creatures either side of Hermes, in their chests, black goo seeped down their bodies and out of their mouths as the spears, like boomerangs, shot back to me. They slumped to their knees, like two marionettes with their strings cut. A whine close to me drew my attention away from Alpha and Hermes, I whipped my head around as the vampire that had been taunting me disappeared, my eyes instinctively went to my Alpha. My mouth flew open in shock and fear as the vamp appeared directly behind Daniel, gripping his neck and taking him unawares. I watched in horror as his teeth inched nearer Daniel’s skin in slow-motion.
“NO!” I screamed as my power punched out of my chest.
