Chapter 81

When we got back to the estate, I could barely keep my eyes open, it had been an emotionally draining day and the last of my energy had been zapped when my powers were triggered. Daniel carried me carefully from the car to the front door, the silence that had been weighing on us both, proved to be too much for him.
“I never would’ve suggested I mark you if I thought for a second you would have the same side effects as a Lycan would.” He muttered darkly as he held me.
“Daniel, I don’t want to fight about this anymore, we have more important things to worry about right now,” I replied quietly as he set me down by the front door.
“You mean your powers?” He asked as he walked into the house, I followed after him, exhausted.
“I need to find out where they come from, and what I’m capable of. I need to know if I’m dangerous.” I said sadly as we headed for the kitchen.
“Yeah, I’ve been wondering about that too. Are you sure your mother doesn’t know anything?” He asked as he pulled food out of the refrigerator.
“I don’t see how she could. If she knew anything about my father, she would’ve told me. What reason would she have to keep it from me?” I asked.
“Then I think we should still go to see Hyacinth. She may be able to see something about your father, where he is, and what he is.” Daniel said carefully like he was afraid of upsetting me. “I think she’s our best option, besides, we need to know more about what the vampires are planning, so we can help the other packs.”
“I know, I’m just scared of what we will find out. Or worse, she won’t know anything, and I’ll never find out where I came from or how to control these powers.” I explained the stress and exhaustion weighed me down. Daniel walked around the counter and took the seat next to me, he put his arm around me to comfort me.
“We will find someone who can help you, I don’t care how much it costs or how long it takes we will find out how you can control your powers.” He said as he kissed me and held me close.
“What about the pack?” I whispered into his chest, my real was fear finally out there and between us.
“What about them?” He asked confused, I took a deep breath, terrified of his response.
“We can’t ask them to wait God knows how long for their Luna, while we search for someone to help me,” I said, as I fought back tears.
“You can still be their Luna, your powers won’t stop you from being there for them or being with me.” He said as he stoked my back.
“You say that now, but what happens if I lose control and use my powers on someone in the pack?” I dreaded his reply, even if I knew I would say the same thing in his position.
“You won’t, I trust you.” He surprised me by saying. “You would never hurt an innocent, you would only use your powers against someone who deserved it, I know that, and the pack will too. And we don’t know that Hyacinth won’t be able to help you at least control your powers. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we fly out tomorrow to see Hyacinth, we can talk about this more after we’ve talked to her.” Daniel said, he got back up to make us something to eat. I couldn’t think of anything but what would happen if I lost control. We ate our food and went to bed in relative silence, the stress of the day weighed on us both. We went through our nightly routine, and neither of us was sure about how we could reassure or comfort the other. I started feeling guilty, Daniel was dealing with so much, and I felt like I was just adding to his worries and stress.
“What will happen with Owen while we are away?” I tentatively asked, keenly aware that I hadn’t asked him about what happened.
“He gave up the names of everyone involved in planning the coup, including Pratt, they were rounded up a few hours ago. I will have to go the cells in the morning before we go to the funeral, I need to try and find out what Pratt knows. Then when we get back the pack will gather and Owen and Pratt will be executed, the fate of the other co-conspirators will be decided by the pack, but our laws are clear. Owen and Pratt must die for their betrayal.” He said lowly, and without looking at me. I felt awful, I should have been more sensitive to all Daniel was going through.
“I’m sorry you have to be the one to make that decision. Is there anything I can do to help?” His head snapped up to look at me.
“You’re not mad?” He asked, confused.
“I don’t agree with death as a punishment, but I also understand that they endangered the lives of your people, and some people can’t be rehabilitated. I just wish you didn’t have the responsibility of ordering their deaths, it can’t be an easy thing to have on your conscience.” I replied, as I stripped off my clothes and pulled on a nightie.
“Actually, after everything they did, and threatened to do to you, Maria, Ben, my parents... I have no qualms about sentencing them to death. Does that make me a bad person?” He asked me earnestly.
“No, of course not, I can’t imagine being in your position, I don’t think I could do it, but I don’t want you to be tortured by what you had to do for the greater good either.” I rushed to his side, to comfort him, I crawled on the bed and wrapped my arms around him. “I love you,” I said softly, unsure of what to say in this situation.
“I love you too.” He replied with a kiss. “I don’t think I could handle any of this without you beside me.” We lay down in the bed, my head on his chest, his arm wrapped protectively around my shoulders. I felt my eyes grow heavy almost immediately.

I found myself in our meadow, but it looked like there had been a battle. The long grass Daniel and I had spent so many nights playing in, chasing each other and making love in, was trampled down. There were deep gouges in the earth in many places and the vivid colours of the wildflowers had been replaced by dark splattering’s of mud. I searched desperately for Daniel, praying he would know what had happened, but I saw no one. I started walking towards the house, my legs feeling weak and my stomach in knots, as I feared what I would find when I got there. I rounded the large bushes, that looked remarkably untouched by whatever atrocity had been committed and saw the broken, burned down wreck of what used to be the house. The shock knocked the air from my lungs, and my knees buckled, I began sobbing as I stared at the once beautiful house that now looked like a shell of its former glory.
“Hello Charlie.” The voice from behind me, made me jump, but sounded familiar. I turned, afraid of who I would find in the disaster zone, only to find myself gazing into the violet eyes of the woman from my dream. “I have been waiting for you, why have you not completed the mate bond yet? It is vital to the coming war. None of this needs to happen and there is still time to prevent it.” I felt terror, wash over me, I wasn’t ready, but I couldn’t allow so much destruction to happen either.
“I’m afraid.” I heard myself say.
“Of the mate bond? Of your Alpha? Or of yourself?” She asked, her head tilted to the side as she studied me.
“Of being left alone, never able to move on, and with a child to raise.” I admitted, ashamed.
“I know it is hard to understand right now, but the fate of your mother, it is not yours, you need to complete the mate bond by the end of the month, or we may not be able to prevent this future from happening.” She said looking deep into my eyes, I could see the fear in hers.
“What are the vampires trying to do?” I asked, the question escaping my mouth before I could stop it.
“They are beings of destruction; they want what they were created to want.” She said cryptically, making me roll my eyes in annoyance.
“What does that even mean?” I snapped annoyed.
“You will find out soon enough.” She replied with a smile, she brushed my hair behind my ear. “Remember, the end of the month, or the future will be set. Now wake up Charlie!”
“Wake up baby, please?” Daniel’s voice replaced the woman’s as my surroundings suddenly melted away, revealing the bedroom, and Daniel’s panicked face.
“What happened?” I asked as his body sagged in relief.
